Maestro,  true to my word about procuring Italian wines, I just scored 3 bottles of the '04 and 1 bottle of the '00 Pio Cesare Barolo for $50/bot from Benchmark Cellars.  I think I remember you writing that you recently tried the '04 and loved it...

Someday I'll have gnocchi with truffles and Barolo in your honor!

Good for you Craig.

You will find my TNs for both wines on CT.

We have a great BICE restaurant here that has an annual Truffle promotion:

They are pretty stingy with the quanities, but it's fun all the same.
Would think Barolo, or any wine would overwhelm the flavour though.
Maestro?

PS  If you book ask for Roberto

Oh, no, no, no... In effetti abbastanza l' opposto.

I can't conceive of consuming truffles without wine, and Barolo is the #1 choice.

So I picked up the 03 Pio Cesare today.  I don't know why, but one of the shops I frequent the most seems to have a "one off" policy for the top wines.  The 03 Pio, instead of the 04...the 03 Guiraud Sauternes, instead of the 05...anyway...

Maestro, I know you haven't had, or at least noted on, the 03 Pio, but any thoughts on my purchase?

Speaking of Pio Cesare, I saw this one at Costco recently for about $70.  Any thoughts from our resident Italian wine expert?

The 2001 Il Bricco I tasted at the merchant. It is a very good wine with a more modern style and it tasted like it had more new oak then other bottlings, which means it will require more patience for the wood to integrate. Probably hitting its best after 2013 or so. But very good fruit nonetheless, and good complexity.

The 2003 Pio Cesare Barolo I haven't tried myself, so I can't offer firsthand experience. The 2003 Barolo wines I had are a bit more fruit-forward than usual and will be maturing relatively early for Barolo (i.e., already from 2010 you should be looking at the ideal drinking window of most of those wines). I read good reviews for the 03 Pio Cesare but I did not taste it.

Can't agree more with Maestro - I've been shifting to Italians recently, although France still makes up 46% of my cellar and Italy only 8%!

Spanish wines are also worth looking out for IMHO. 2004 was a great year for them as well.
