The usual story.  Go to local wine shop to buy "a couple" of bottles for the weekend.

Turms out they have a fine wine sale.  Of course it would be rude to pass up the opportunity to not buy more that 2 bottles.

Just bought

Chateau Gloria 97 - £14
La Pointe Pomerol 2000 - £17
Pontet Canet 97 - £16
Tokaji 97 - £9 (half bottle)
Monbousqet 98 - £30

Also bought quite a few burgundies reduced from the £40-£50 mark down to £20.

Drinking the Gloria right now - pretty damned good, even if 97 was slated as not a great year.

For those in the UK, get to your local Davy's wine store - I think most are around London - they have some great deals.

Working hard today then!

Friday afternoon, 'catching up with correspondence' and a nice glass of wine.

Sounds ideal.

I was billing my client for, ahem, "working from home".

Paul makes a good point about the '97s. Apparently quite pricey at release (or en primeur), but no acclaim to support the prices. I have had a few of these, and each was perfectly fine and true to form, e.g., the '97 Cos tasted like a Cos. I had an opportunity to buy a bunch of them at decent prices, an opportunity of which I regretfully did not take full (i.e., multiple case) advantage. All of those I have had were ready to go in 2008.

Cheers,

John

I've had a few 97s and each one has been excellent.  I think if you go up the wine ladder and spend a reasonable amount of money you will get good quality wine at a reasonable price that is drinking well know.

As so many experts say, buy good wine in bad years.
