Time look reflect on your Octoberfest of wines!

Mine was 1988 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande  lovely aged bordeaux.

With an honorbale mention for 2004 Domaine Monpertuis (Paul Jeune) Châteauneuf-du-Pape .  This wine was just a lot better than I expected.

I drank a lot of mediocre wine in October.  The best were some of the bottles from our anniversary trip with the late disgorged Le Reve being the best of them:

1999 Domaine Carneros Le Reve Blanc de Blancs Late Disgorged Brut
2003 Domaine Carneros Le Reve Blanc de Blancs Brut
2005 Continuum Proprietary Red
2006 Blackbird Vineyards Paramour
2003 Teachworth Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Blend

2001 Paul Jaboulet Ainee Hermitage La Chappelle

Or the 98 Beaucastel

Or, the 1998 Rauzan-Gassies Margaux which I thought was actually not that far off the 89 Margaux I had with Khamen.

For me, standing tall on the winners platform were:

Gold Medal 1999 Tommoso Bussola Amarone Vigneto Alto

Silver Medal 2002 Terrazas de Los Andes Cheval des Andes

Bronze Medal 2005 Spring Valley Vineyard Uriah

My top wine was 1986 Smith Woodhouse Porto Tawny Colheita.
It was followed closely by 2004 Kistler Chardonnay Athearn Estate McCrea Vineyard.

d'Yquem 2001 with Toby - simples!

Possibly the greatest wine I have ever tried...

Honourable mentions to:

Felton Road Pinot Noir 2008 (also with Toby), and
Figeac 2001 - a real brain-bender but excellent

Biggest disappointment was a very closed  Ch Margaux 1983 (with...you guessed it...Toby...)

1998 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon The Montelena Estate - some recent reviews said this one might be past its peak, but I found it to be hanging on nicely.

2001 Ferrari-Carano Trésor (Reserve) - blend that is ready for drinking. It was the hit of the night with some of my wine friends who had not had it.

2006 Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino - one of the better QPR I have had.

October was not a particularly strong month. I drank a super Tuscan  at a restaurant; "Ca' Marcanda," Gaja Promis '05
it was delicious. From my cellar at home, my favorite October wine was 2005 Anglim Best Barrel Blend   yummy. Looking forward to more inspiring wines in November. It has started out well, I'm enjoying a  2007 Barrel 27 Wine Company Grenache Rock And A Hard Place  tonight.

Difficult to say - October was a month of many, many wines - wine region holidays aside, this was more than I have drank in a month for a long time.

Best wine must be a toss-up between a fantastic 1998 Henri Giraud Champagne Fût de Chêne and a 1999 Inniskillin Vidal Icewine

With honourable mention going to two outstanding but very young Bordeaux:
2005 Château Léoville Barton
2005 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

The later probably being just a bit better than the first.

not counting wines tasted during day-trip to Santa Rita Hills, October was a very slow month (have had some form of a cold nearly all month)

My favorite out of our cellar this past month was a 2004 Domaine Beaurenard - "Boisrenard" CdP

It seems this kind of comment happens a lot for this wine.  Makes me want open one and try.  Is it better to wait for a couple more years?  At this price, I really don't want to commit infanticide.

It's really a question of how perfect is perfect - I ran out and bought 24 halves a couple days after trying this and giving it a perfect 100 (only the second wine ever I have given 100 to). I am going to try to hold back for a while on the rest although I'm pretty sure a couple will go down at Xmas. If you've got more than one then find an occasion and open it. Yes it's probably infanticide but when a wine is this good it really doesn't matter.

Had a couple of forgettable Burgundies in the $80-$120 range.

These two stuck out:

2003 Storybook Mountain Zinfandel, Mayacamas Range: SUPER aromatic with massive ripe brambly fruit, coffee, vanilla, spice, leather, flowers and on and on.  Tertiary aromas were starting to fill in too -- mushroom, sandalwood, tea, etc.  It all came together in that symphonic way wines do when you catch them just right.  Good balance of tannin and acid.  It was, however (and surprisingly) bad with food.  Not just not good, bad.  Saved the glass until the meal was done.

2004 Allegrini Amarone: You always remember your first time and she was a beauty, if a little immature.  Sure there are glossy magazine super-bottles out there, but out of my league.  The ragazze della porta accanto (girls next door according to babelfish) I've had since don't measure up, to say nothing of her homely cousin Ripaso.

Mostly from a great Bday party....

  • 2003 Hoopes Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville - USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville (10/16/2009)
Sweet cherry and berry with really smooth and well integrated tannins. Lush and rich with a medium finish. Lovely and smooth (92 pts.)
  • 2005 Two Hands Shiraz Bella's Garden - Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley (10/3/2009)
really delicous with red fruit and lush fruit and a great, long finish (94 pts.)
  • 2005 Realm Cellars The Bard - USA, California, Napa Valley (10/3/2009)
Great dark fruit with structure, mocha, chocolate and fabulous finish (94 pts.)
  • 2006 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Willow Creek Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (10/3/2009)
took a while to open up. Initially was rather sour and bitter but after a couple of hours the true pinot character came out and it offered great red fruits with earth and spice (91 pts.)

Not a big wine month for me.

    2004 Don Melchor
2006 Mitolo G.A.M. (this was surprising, I expected more of a bomb and it came across as very balanced)

    Best Value

04 Le Galantin Pascal Bandol Le Galantin - simply lovely and drinking very well...hard to believe that it was less than $15

The 2005 Monpertuis is quite good, also

Paul Jeune is extremely interesting. I went to his retail shop in Avignon ("Rebel Wines" if I remember the name correctly) and picked up a 2004 white CDP for the London Tasting - not sure if anyone remembers that.

Gold Medal:  2006 Jiménez Landi Méntrida Pielago

Silver Medal:  2005 Camus Pere & Fils Latricières-Chambertin

    Bronze Medal:
2007 Domaine de la Quilla Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie (for silly good QPR)

Honorable Mention: 2006 Spice Route Pinotage - not because it was all that great, but simply for being a pinotage I'd actually consider buying.

I had one of these about a year ago.  It sticks out in my mind for the same reason.  Good QPR.  Definitely worth buying a bottle if you come across it.

Had to think about this a little, but the heather mead that my brother made and shared with me when we went to visit outshines every other bottle I had in October.  It's really good--he's been encouraged to enter it in competitions, and I hope he does so.  (It's probably also the best dessert wine I've had this year, period.  Not that I drink a lot of dessert wine, but still...)
