Had a couple of forgettable Burgundies in the $80-$120 range. These two stuck out: 2003 Storybook Mountain Zinfandel, Mayacamas Range: SUPER aromatic with massive ripe brambly fruit, coffee, vanilla, spice, leather, flowers and on and on. Tertiary aromas were starting to fill in too -- mushroom, sandalwood, tea, etc. It all came together in that symphonic way wines do when you catch them just right. Good balance of tannin and acid. It was, however (and surprisingly) bad with food. Not just not good, bad. Saved the glass until the meal was done. 2004 Allegrini Amarone: You always remember your first time and she was a beauty, if a little immature. Sure there are glossy magazine super-bottles out there, but out of my league. The ragazze della porta accanto (girls next door according to babelfish) I've had since don't measure up, to say nothing of her homely cousin Ripaso.
