Just taking inventory of my cellar and realizing there are many bottles - maybe three or four cases - that I'm not likely to open. These are wines I bought back when my enthusiasm outpaced my discernment. Not that it's plonk; it's just that my palate has gone a different direction, and given all the other bottles I've since acquired it's unlikely that these will get any attention. I suppose I will give away some over the holidays (again it's not crap wine and it's not over the hill, so I don't feel bad gifting it). But I got to wondering what others would do in this situation. Any creative ideas?

Mike,

If you have friends who drink wine, offer to sell them the wine at your cost. My guess is that you had good reasons to buy the extra bottles when you did, and as you noted, your tastes have changed. So, people who are not that knowledgeable might appreciate buying a decent bottle. Often, inexperienced imbibers are reluctant to buy an unknown wine because they have no idea what they are buying. Moreover, my guess is that your bottles may have a little more age on them than the wines that are available in most supermarkets and many shops, something that should add to their appeal.

I have done this, and some of my friends who are less experienced drinkers have genuinely appreciated it.

Cheers,

John

I am fortunate to do tailgaters at every Autzen (Oregon Ducks) game.  Here in Oregon my son's friends and lots of folks have gotten into our local crafted beers and wines.  It seems whatever I put out is appreciated and gets drunk.  I have unloaded lots of internet woot wine, zins, whites, and other stuff that I am not interested in anymore.

I also ship a couple of cases a year to my daughter in AZ.  Along with some nice Oregon PN's I put in some good wine from other areas that I probably will not open.

As I mentioned in my Halloween thread, we ended up with a bunch of wine that people brought but was not consumed.

In our case, most are bottles I wouldn't drink.

That said, I never would gift a bottle that I don't think is good, and most of these are plonk.

Short of skeet shooting with them, I will likely cook with them (yeah, I know: don't cook with a wine you wouldn't drink). But in good consciousness, I couldn't give 'em to anyone.

I don't have much of a reputation, but I'd like to uphold what little reputation there is.

Hmm… that sounds like something Serge would gig me about…

If you have been blessed with experience and cases of wine to share, find a way to do so and enjoy it!  One idea: Depending on how much variety is represented in those 'extra' bottles, you could organize a couple few tasting evenings and have people over who would appreciate having their horizons broadened...

The best way is to know some college kids or musicians, hell any young people will drink it up before you know it.  If shipping wasn't so expensive, I would ship all my extra to my daughter in NYC where they party at every occasion.  I did ship three cases back when my wife drove across with a load of kitchen cabinets and furniture for her newly purchased house.  My problem there is that she likes the same Oregon Pinot that I do, so they have to come out here to drink it.

Make gluhwein or sangria!

Easy sangria: cut up some citrus into rings and or 1/2 rings and marinate in some brandy (or vodka 1/2 pint per bottle of wine is okay, more will work too).  Mix frozen concentrated OJ or citrus-dominated juice blend (OJ, Pineapple, Banana works well) at a rate of 1 can per 2 or 3 bottle of wine.  Add the fruit rings and brandy.  Stir, serve over lots of ice.

Easy gluhwein: buy German-made mulling tea-bags from Eurofood store or online.  Gently heat with the wine, add sugar to taste, add vodka, pour into mugs.  If a little alcohol steams up into your nose when you take a drink you've done it right.

One of my best memories of traveling in Europe was right after communism fell in the Czech Republic.  On crisp fall night in Prague entrepreneurs sold gluhwein in paper cups from the windows of their apartments.  The city is beautiful at night to start, add 5 cent Gluhwein at every turn and a new Swedish friend from the hostel .... magic!

when I was in the same shoes, I gave assorted case as a wedding gift to my friend with STRICT instructions:
not to open for the next 3 years, but...his wife and sister in law finished it anyway WITHOUT me!

Win-win situation!

For what it's worth I usually drop my unwanteds/clearance bottles down at the village pub on the basis if they can sell it they can, and if not (usually the case) I have something to drink if I fancy wine one night in-house selection is a bit limited there. Plus I never have to pay corkage.

If you tried that in Washington State w/ our liquor laws you'd be in line for a lethal injection.

I always save it all and use it as wine for the adults on Halloween, or for when the Christmas House Tour goes down our street every December.  99% of these people I will never see again, and 95% of them could careless what it is so long as there is alcohol in it.  We set up plastic cups and decanters out on our bistro table out front, and so long as the weather is nice, I am out there pouring as they stroll down out street to see the decorations.  Always a crowd pleaser!  Gotta love small town America!  -mJ

There was a thing in Decanter this month from their US correspondent about a new law in Maine wich means it is now illegal to provide tastings for customers where they may be seen drinking by a child. Therefore curtained off tasting areas and blacked out windows are apparently becoming the order of the day. Decanter then point out that it's fine for kids to see adults drinking in retaurants, just not retailers for some reason...

The other good one was NY state where they say wine shos can't sell beer and beer shops can't sell wine. Additinally wine shops can't sell food or water

I thought you lot got rid of prohibition??

I tried to walk into my local import beer bottle shop with my 4 month old baby under my arm a few months ago.  they sent me out of the store because they have 1 tap installed that they use for very occasional events and tastings (nothing flowing when I was there).  She's a minor, and 1 infant + 1 totally inactive tap well behind the counter = illegal.  Ridiculous!

So I shouldn't have given those bottles to trick or treaters?

I give away my excess bottles to charities. They will always take donations and I get to have more cellar space. Getting hard and harder to find wine to give away though.

I give wine to charities as well. They are always thrilled. Saturday we hosted a fund raising event for one at our home and poured 30 some bottles. About half was mine and half was donated to the event.
