At long last, February is the month where you will be able to get your hands on the new CellarTracker site.

This is coming Saturday, February 27th at 9AM Pacific time. It is 1AM Pacific right now, and I am finishing off a number of loose ends. I can't believe we are almost here after more than 15 months of working on this. Just a few more hours and hopefully a little bit of sleep too.

As a reminder, here is a sneak preview video and demo: http://www.screencast.com/t/OTE5MzVhNz

Over the next few weeks I will be making several changes under the covers. My goal is to do this with minimal disruption to the current CellarTracker site, but I am human and technology is brittle.
  • DONE 1/29: Set up a new URL/site to host the new interface. Apologies, there was a 5-minute brown out today as I wrestled with some web server configuration.
  • DONE 2/8: I posted most of my remaining low-level database changes to enable the new site. I have been testing these like crazy, but there is always the chance that I will introduce glitches in the current site. There was a 12 minute advertised and planned outage from 3:02-3:14PM. HOPEFULLY no unplanned issues. These are low level changes, so you should see no difference.
  • DONE 2/24: There are likely to be some residual mop-up database changes as I do final testing and catch a few things, so I may have an occasional planned outage for 10-15 minutes over the next few weeks. On 2/24 I am planning a much longer (a few hours?) late night outage to update some major tables and regenerate some caches
  • PLANNED 2/27: BETA GOES LIVE! Probably around 9am Pacific. I need to get my morning coffee and then hunker down for the expected onslaught. It will be a busy weekend of questions and hopefully not too many glitches
  • As a happy coincidence, RoundersRob pointed out that 2/27 is OTBN (Open That Bottle Night), so let's all open a special bottle that night to celebrate!
I have had MANY, MANY requests to be included in the beta. The beta will be open. My goal is that anyone or everyone will be able to use the beta. This will all be running in real time, on the same servers, against the EXACT same database as the current site. In fact you should be able to switch back and forth seamlessly. There are lots of features only exposed in the new site, but things should coexist happily with the current site. One rub is that the new site will have email notifications for some actions (e.g. if someone requests to be your 'friend', someone has commented on one of your tasting notes etc.), so people who are still sticking with the current CT may start getting notifications that are driving them to the new site. I will try to do what I can to make sure that everyone is aware before the beta goes out.

This beta will in fact be a beta, e.g. an 0.9 software version and not a 1.0. My goal is that if you want, you will be able to switch to it right away instead of the current CellarTracker site. My #1 goal is to get 100% of current users onto the new site, happily with no regrets. My hope is that most people will master the new site in less than 5-10 minutes, but I am taking a cautious, phased approach. I do still have a long list of things to finish before I can officially move everyone to the new site and decommission the current site. At a minimum I expect to take 2-3 months doing this, but realistically I think it will be mid-year before everything is all done and ready to cut over completely. In a number of areas in the new site you will see some obvious direction that Ill explore ever more deeply in the future, and in general the new site offers a much richer, more organized, more modern canvas which which I can innovate and iterate for you.

OK, I will stop rambling for now. Please bear with me for a few more weeks as I approach the finish line of this next phase. I am so very excited to have you all using this and doing everything I can to get it to you.

This is great news. One question is do you plan to use a forum (existing or new) for posting "bugs" in the event (hopefully unlikely) event the eager beaver beta testers find some hiccups or some other scheme?

I was thinking the existing support forum could work, but I could always make a new forum if there is too much traffic.

Keep Mr. Murphy OUT of the lab! Maybe you can leave enough wine out to keep him occupied and over-served.

I suppose...just to help in beta testing...I will buy and consume more wine after you release 0.9. Again, just to help you. :)

I, like Richard, also wonder what Eric will be drinking during the official unveiling. VERY exciting stuff! Thanks for all you do.

Eric,  did I glimpse a change in the rating scale on your video on the new CT?  Is 90-93 now going to be very good to excellent?  If so, isn't this a 'grade inflation'?  Or is this just a quick and dirty detail that will work its way out later?

Best, John Trombley

Crikey, it was a typo. There have been 5 threads on it. It was fixed the next day: http://www.cellartracker.com/forum/tm.asp?m=83026

I'm chomping at the bit. The demo video makes CellarTracker2010 Beta0.9 look fantastic! Will it have a barcode scanner like cor.kz gives us? Will cor.kz integrate better with the new CT interface? They both do certain things better than the other, but full integration is still not quite with us. Thanks! :-)

In the short term Cor.kz will continue to run just as it does. Longer term I will expose more things in the API for Cor.kz. The current site already supports UPC. In the future I plan to make management and acquisition of UPC codes easier. http://www.cellartracker.com/ow.asp?ExistingUPC

Looks like the new site will have a new name also, grapestories.com.  Nice article on Eric and Cellartracker by Jancis Robinson too:

Congrats Eric, just a few days and sleepless nights to go. May the new launch be a non-event (the greatest hope of integrators everywhere)

Hey Eric - I saw on the CT main site on my home page taht the new CT would be arriving on the 27th, but didn't see any mention of that in here... is that date set in stone? Will we all be receiving e-mails that let us know how to access it? Thanks for this awesome work that you're doing.

Yes it will be Saturday the 27th. I will likely just turn it on and quietly post a link on the site. The carefully monitor the traffic and error logs on the 27th and 28th. Assuming all goes well I will do an email blast on Monday, 3/1.

Sounds like a pretty perfect schedule to me... that isn't a holiday weekend, and you'll have a couple of weeks to get things rolling even after 3/1. Peak wine season is now over, so you'll have a couple of months at the least to roll things up and get the kinks out before things pick up in the summer.

Can't wait.

Any preference: we all turn up on the 27th and go wild, we turn up as the mood grabs us, something in between?

Just feel free to use the new site. All of your data will be there (it shares the same database with the current site). Feel free to use as you see fit, ask questions etc.

This is my very first message to a forum... whew, took me a few steps to have the rights to post something! I viewed the new release video this morning and the demo. It looks very nice. One thing I hope I can still see are when people post notes on my cellar wines. This is my favourite thing to keep track of: what are people saying about the wines I have in my cellar? Hope that will be included. We are very new to cellartracker and I do love the application. Thanks!

Yes that is very much still there and is one of the most popular features. And soon you will be able to reply to the notes as well or ask a question of the author (with the author's permission of course).

Thousands of hours at this point. And still plenty more to do until it is really done. But there is a ton for you to play with, and for many/most tasks my goal is that people will be able to switch away from the current CellarTracker if they so choose.
