As if this wasn't a busy enough month, this Thursday, 2/25 I will be replacing the auction data from WineBid.com in favor of a new set that is based on averaged results from all of the major auction houses. This data is licensed from a new partner (to be revealed on Thursday). Later today I will email all currently paid up CellarTracker users who have also linked their WineBid accounts to their CellarTracker accounts.
  • Since this is a new dataset, it is very likely that the 'appraised' value of cellars may shift a bit. My recommendation is that anyone who feels strongly should download a copy of their current valuation as described here:
    http://www.cellartracker.com/ow.asp?ExcelDownload
  • One nice thing about this new partner is that 'activation' of the auction data will be a LOT easier than it was in the past with WineBid. No credit cards, no need to be in a state where WineBid can ship etc. Rather just a 1-click opt-in to share your email address with the new partner (so that they can create an account for you on their site which will let you see even richer views into the auction data). All currently paid-up CellarTracker users will get another email on Thursday to explain how to do this.
  • In the future we will also likely explore a free, 1-time trial of CellarTracker with the auction data turned on so that anyone can easily test-drive the premium functionality.
I veryexcited about the future integration possibilities here to expose much richer auction data to those who subscribe to both sites. Unfortunately due to the coincidental timing with my new beta coming on 2/27 this new auction relationship is not going to get a lot of hubbub for a couple of weeks, but you will be hearing a lot more in the future.

Hi Eric,
Can you tell us which datasets will be used? One of the benefits of winebid.com is that many (most) of my wines fall outside of the Acker/Sotheby's blue chip category, but I would like to continue to value them. Will there be some sort of auction results which might replace the type of wines represented by winebid?

Thanks and great work!

All major international auctions. WineBid does do a nice job of covering wines that would not normally make it to auction, but CellarTracker actually has community average data for more than 250,000 pricepoints on most of these wines. Bottom line, we will all find out on Thursday, so run the download if you have any concerns.

Eric,

I occasionally sell on WineBid, and have found the data you get from them very useful in estimating the reserves they would set on my wines and determining which bottles I would consign, before dealing with WineBid directly. I suspect the answer is No, but is there any way to continue the feeds from WineBid, in addition to the average valuations you'll get from this new partner ?

Scott, no, sorry.

You can of course give your feedback to WineBid, as this was their choice. (Many people have also noticed and complained that they unlinked the CellarTracker scores from their store -- which I provided to them freely.) It's OK though. I predict that in a few years all of their competitors will link the scores, and I would always welcome them back as well.

Eric,

Thanks. I wasn't aware it was WineBid's decision, and I'll send my comments to them.

OK, we're back. Currently all traffic running on the main SQL Server while I reinitialize replication to the guest database. So performance could be a little draggy for the next 90 minutes until that is done and I rebalance the load.

The main action is for any paying/premium user to do the 2 click required to turn on the Wine Market Journal data: http://www.cellartracker.com/wmj_opt.asp

Add me to the people that would like to see WineBid data included as well as the Wine Market Journal.  WB covers a lot more wines than the 'major international auctions' do,  Am I to assume that they are not one of these major auctions included in the average?  Also, I hope and assume that over time we will see the Wine Market Journal include historical data to analyze trends.  Is there any way to include the last several years of historical data right from the get go?

Chuck,

You should address your concerns to WineBid. They chose to terminate my contract without so much as a phone call or an explanation. They also chose to remove the CellarTracker scores from their site. I frankly don't know why. We seemed to have a very positive relationship for 4.5 years, and they certainly were payed handily in royalties from CellarTracker.

As far as I know, WineBid is the only auction house that does not share their data with the industry. They used to publish their results on their site, but they pulled those down years ago. Neither the Wine Market Journal nor any of the rest of the various industry auction indices includes data from WineBid. Do you see a pattern?

You can see trends right now on the WMJ site. In the future I plan to work with them to integrate this more tightly in CT for co-subscribers.

I am curious if you have looked at the retail pricing averages from GlobalWineStocks.com. They have been eager to license data to me, and I haev been considering integrating that as another layer of data to help increase coverage.

I was disappointed to read that Winebid terminated their relationship with CT. I found their auction data to be very helpful for me in making purchases, particularly with older (i.e. > 10 years of age) wines. One thing that I noticed with the new WMJ integration is the lack of historical auction data, which for me at least is much more important than having just the current quarter data. You need multiple data points, over time, to evaluate trends, and I am very disappointed to see that this information is no longer present. Forgive me -- I was an Econ major . I hope you can figure out a way to quickly bring this capability back to CT!

Thanks,
Brian

The data is available ON THE WMJ site. In fact they have much more historical data than WineBid (whose data went back to 2003). The WMJ data goes back to 1997. I still need to work on the integration with WMJ to enable easy clickthrough and/or direct integration for people who are WMJ subscribers.

I should be clear. I am quite disappointed with WineBid. At the same time I am quite excited about the Wine Market Journal and feel like there is excellent alignment of long term vision. Each dataset has strengths and weaknesses. My goal is to bring you as much data as I can, but in this case I was thrown a curveball with a very short amount of time to react.

BTW, this has also made me realize that I should look into surfacing time-based drilldown into the community prices, as there are a LOT of data points there on over 250,000 wines. I don't find the data as timely as auction data, but I have never tried a time-based slice either. When I get the new beta out I will take a look.

Man, that's super-disappointing to hear. The two sites had such a great synergy. I hope something works out again in the future for that.

Thanks Josh, I hope so too.

Love your site BTW. I hope that "Swansong" wasn't for CT.

Eric, I will talk to some of the people I deal with there, not that it will make any difference.  I remember when they yanked their results off their own site years ago.  I didn't think it was smart, and told them I would have paid for the data.  Then you gave it to me for free!  And in a much easier to access format.  Thank you.  This decision of theirs goes beyond 'not smart' into the 'inexplicably stupid' category.

if wine market journal is the better product, how is it that we all heard of global first? hope you will guide us through the best features of both databases.

i love the idea of drilling down cellartracker personal values. i have been keeping my own little histories in the private notes box. i would particularly be interested in tracking value at point of consumption separately from current value.

What is "global"?

Wine Market Journal is very good for collectible wines that come up to auction. Much more representative prices.

I just sent the following note to WB.   Hopefully others will do likewise...

I was disappointed to learn that you terminated your relationship with CellarTracker recently. I utilized, on a great many occasions, the WineBid avg quarterly prices in CellarTracker when making bids. Now the Wine Market Journal auction prices for the wines I searched on this week are so far out of whack with your minimum bids that I don't feel as though I have good enough data to make a reasonable bid. Therefore I am going to halt bidding on wines on your site for the time being. I hope that you resume your relationship with CellarTracker as soon as possible.

FYI, that a couple of days ago the Wine Market Journal folks launched a MAJOR upgrade to their site with the inclusion of a significant amount of Internet auction data together with the traditional auction results they have been working on for the past decade.

I have the CellarTracker version (quarterly averages) in hand and should have it integrated early next week. With this in place I think any concerns about loss of coverage due to the loss of the WineBid will be greatly minimized or eliminated. I am very excited and pleased about my partnership with the WMJ folks. They have done a HUGE amount of work and made enormous progress with the CT community in mind over the past six months. Anyway, I just wanted to give folks a heads up that this is coming shortly on the CT side.
