As I mentioned in an earlier post, I've been a bad boy and have not been writing release notes for the past few months. The biggies include:
  1. 3.3.0 - automatic integration with Stephen Tanzer's IWC
  2. 3.4.0 - bulk import
  3. 3.5.0 - auto-valuation
Plus a whole bunch of little fit and finish things along the way.
Tonight I turned on version 3.6.0 which in and of itself won't be earth shattering. However, I have a new tool at my disposal that should prove very useful. I am now using Microsoft Index Server to provide full text search for the "Add new wine" search dialog. The functionality is quite equivalent to what I used to have for the past 2.5 years, but the performance difference is dramatic. Searches that used to take 5-8 seconds should now consistently execute in less than 0.1 seconds on the server. Of course, sometimes network flakiness will slow down page rendering, but you should find it to be FAST! This will also help those users who are doing bulk import mapping. In the near future, I hope to all provide full keyword search within tasting notes, personal notes and perhaps professional reviews, all using the same technology.

There are a couple of gotchas with this technology. There is a little bit of latency after a wine is added or edited (about 15 seconds under normal load). So if you create a brand new wine and then for some reason try to search for it in the "Add new wine screen" (why would you do this???), well there will be a brief period of time where it won't show up. Also, the wildcard searching is a little different and requires you to type the full prefix to a word. So a search on "eaucastel" will yield no hits for "Beaucastel". However, a search on "beauc" will do the job.

My biggest concern is also with the reliablity of the indexing service and ensuring that it doesn't stall and become quite stale. If it does for some reason and I can't troubleshoot it, I will simpl roll the search query back to the older, slower one. Anyway, something to keep an eye on. I am very excited about the performance breakthrough here.

Also, this coming Friday I hope to double the RAM on the database server to 4GB which should provide some significant performance gains for many queries. There will likely be a brief outage sometime on Friday when I shut down to pop in the new SIMMs.

Sure, you add this new fast search right AFTER I add all my wines!  Seriously, it does seem much faster, thanks.

Thanks Chuck. Sorry about the timing.

OK, more of the iceberg is revealed. Now keyword searches for most queries (tasting notes, inventory, consumed) all use the full text search. When just looking at data in your own cellar, it is at worst the same speed as the prior algorithm and at best about twice as fast. However, when doing global queries across the site (to see all user tasting notes with the keyword "pavie" somewhere in the wine name), the difference is about a factor of 20. The site feels great!

More to come...

Keyword searches are literally an order of magnitude faster. Also, the database server is working much less now. Full text search appears to be very efficient. And we did indeed double the RAM on the DB server to 4GB this AM. We were out between 11:03am and 11:25am Pacific. It seems to be doing great, and I am amazingly pleased with the progress!!!

OK, more of the iceberg has been revealed. Now I am exposing (buried in the way too slow and klunky advanced search page) a "Contains text" search parameter that can be used to search within the text of your tasting notes or private notes.
