Splash decanted 30 minutes, but needed an hour to open. Similar to my last note in a good spot and a very enjoyable mature burgundy to enjoy now as the secondaries are really showing well. A-

Dark red/purple in center with a touch of garnet at the edge. Dark fruit on the nose with a bit of forest floor and and ripe plums rather than strawberry. Similar dark fruit and plum on the palate, with refreshing acidity to finish. The acid and tannin structure feel youthful for a wine of this vintage, and the wine will provide pleasurable drinking for many years to come.

Brilliant wine! Stood upside for 2 weeks. One hour decant (lots of sediment). Notes of honeycomb and beebread, with a touch of seaweed. A hint of vanilla (weird, I know, for Ponsot). Taste is complex, difficult to describe: maybe sweet/sour cherry honey and burned wood? Aftertaste is sharp but very pleasant, as those silky tannins fill the mouth and then graciously disappear. Weirdly enough, the wine reminded me of Vougue's Musogny. Will improve for many years, as there is substance, for sure.

Yes, this is at a mature stage, especially given the vintage. But it showed well and was not overly oxidized beyond the 17 years. It was still showing apple and pear flavors and some marzipan. Somewhat like an apple pie but more on the savory elements. FORCEBERRY really captures it well so I won't try to improve on that except that 3 years later the premier cru quality still shows. I also will agree that this vintage is/was earlier maturing than the 2006 which is still in it's prime.

Birthday party (Chicago, IL): Smells like poo, also some 2004 greenness too. Muddy and really not good. Never understood Ponsot. Ostensibly it should be good, but you can't argue with the results?

Good to check in on this again. Slow ox one hour. Lovely subtle floral and red berry nose. The wine shows delicious ripe cherry on the palate with tea and earth notes. Grand cru weight and substance but nicely balanced and elegant. No hurry to drink this up.

This is my first Gran Cru from the Bourgogne region. Maybe my expectations were too high, maybe this winery just doesn’t make the most impressive Gran Cru, but I find this just a ‘fine’ wine. Well made, elegant and with the finish probably being the most impressive part.
There have been 1er Cru that I recently had that I liked much better.

Light ruby/red. Fresh aromas of cherry, some berries and strawberry and hints of wet earth and sweet tobacco. Full bodied with light and silky, integrated, tannins and fresh acidity and fruit. Following through seamlessly into a finish that seems to lingers on for ever and remains fresh throughout.

This wine retained much of its freshness and lively character on the second day. This suggests that it will still hold for many years to come. But both the structure and the limited complexity doesn’t suggest to me that it will improve a lot. Drink now - 2034.

A very good showing for this wine tonight. Audouzed 5 hr in advance but not decanted. This was deep and full, with dark red fruit and hint of the olive notes that others have noted. Experienced burg hounds at the table thought this was the best example of Ponsot CDR they had tasted. That said, I note considerable bottle variation in the cellar tracker notes.

DIVA Burgundy Tasting; 3/19/2024-3/20/2024 (Beaune): Walkaround tasting with producers. Still in cask. Much bigger than Chapelle with clearly greater density as well. Charming combination already of black and red fruits, this lingers on the palate showing so much already. Obviously firm today, this too will require a decade+, and shows 94-97 point potential.

DIVA Burgundy Tasting; 3/19/2024-3/20/2024 (Beaune): Walkaround tasting with producers. Still in cask. More black than red cherry, both ripe and lean fruit emerging, with faint meat notes. Less density came through and it turns out here the average vine age is "only" approx 40 years. Wonderful length with finesse. Very good with 92-94 point potential, starting a decade from now.

Beau nez qui pinotte. Vin énergique et frais, la structure ressort davantage qu’il y a deux ans. Minéral et vigoureux, il a perdu le gras de bébé. J’ai l’impression qu’il gagnerait à vieillir quelques années.

La Paulée de Los Angeles - The Verticals (Maybourne Hotel - Beverly Hills CA): Walkaround vertical tasting. This really showcased what the vintage gave Burgundy, focusing less on ripeness or power, and more on balance and finesse. Elegant and ethereal with great length. This is getting close to its peak drinking window, which I think might be from 2030. Note, a 2nd bottle tasted later was less vibrant.

La Paulée de Los Angeles - The Verticals (Maybourne Hotel - Beverly Hills CA): Walkaround vertical tasting. Certainly lighter than the 2018 but also not particularly accessible right now. Faintly perfumed. Elegant styling here with everything coming through as still powerful. 92+ point potential, from 2027 forward.
