3/31/2024 - Experienced palate Likes this wine: 93 pointsPNP second bottle as first one finished #3 in a 15 bottle CA and Bordeaux blind tasting against some credible aged competition. This bottle was dissected over spicey Mexican cuisine. Up front the nose is aromatic with dark fruit. On the palate it opens with full body younger fruit, cassis with good complexity. The finish has a grippy tannins a bit astringent leading to the hopeful conclusion that this needs more time or at least healthy decant to open it up. As you know this is a high pedigree winery and vineyard so hope you treat it better as I will my next bottle. |

3/26/2024 - jproject Likes this wine: NRFirst time trying the reserve and surprised it didn't really need much time to decant. Drank well PnP. I find this to be very balanced in terns of acidity, mid-palate and finish. Pretty soft tannin compared to the Mayacamas and Mascot I had recently. Definitely more fruit forward than the other 2 but not over-powering. Really enjoyed this and interested to see how it evolves with some age. |

Filtered and decanted for an hour after cork failed to extract intact. A bit tight during the first glass, but with elegant depth, structure, and mouthfeel. Very clean blue and black fruit flavors still remained and seemed well integrated into the cedar, toasted vanilla, and French oak notes. By the second glass, it’s pent up energy had settled down, producing a genuinely enjoyable experience. |

A blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot; it's dominated by Cabernet Franc flavors of herbaceous tobacco with blackberry and black currant. Still a huge wine but the tannins remain under control. Tremendous finish (30 - 45 sec), this is a 30-year wine. It's in a great place right now but will last for several more years. |

Still a bit tannic, this has years on it left, but not sure it will get much better. Classic Cali Cab and this wine went toe to toe with a 1998 VCC which was a smokeshow as well. |

Aromas are of black currant, blackberry, pencil lead, cigar ash, fire pit, charred wood, a touch of eucalyptus and a whisp of mint. Definitely some paulliac vibes combined with touches of mint and eucalyptus, pointing to classic Napa Cab. The palate is densely structured with extracted black currant and ripe blackberry notes on entry. Tannin is medium minus and acid is medium. The Finish lingers nicely replaying much of the nose. I thought this was clearly an old Napa Cab from a classic producer and a 'bigger' vintage. I wondered about something from the late 70s. Really nice showing from this 1985. I usually prefer something more open knit, less dense and darkly fruit but I found some nice appeal here. |

In fact, it's fairly Bordeaux-like in character with a leaner profile than most Napa Cabs and an ethereal texture with lots of freshness. I definitely get the flavors of Napa earth and berry fruit but there are also notes of lead pencil and dark minerals. The tannins needed to soften a bit in a decanter but after an hour, the wine flowed over the tongue like silk. Well done and this should last. At We-Ko-Pa Embers restaurant which has a great wine list with excellent prices - certainly a rarity these days. |

Great nose of some fruit, leather and earth. Very subtle. The palate is a mix of red and black fruit that doesn’t taste old at all. Not many tertiary notes. The fruit is still here and very fresh. An outstanding Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that needs time. Drink in ten to twenty years. Goes well with beef or lamb. |
