Excellent Riesling, hints of sweet with acidity, balanced and complex.

Honeysuckle, green apple, mineralogy, acidity, finishes with some pineapple and a touch of lemon. Very complex and aged beautifully. A

Beautiful red/purple colour.

This is a such a beautiful Barossa Shiraz. Who said Barossa shiraz can't be balanced and approachable? Aromas of violets, berries - red and dark, and hints of anise. Raspberry, boysenberry, chocolate, licorice and gentle spice in the mouth. Really velvety tannins. So easy to drink with food. Will be great with 5 - 10 years on it.

Tasted blind. Lots of oak notes for the first hour. Opened up beautifully and is obvious an excellently made wine. Very nice driving acidity that keeps the tannins in check. Could not get over that my first guess was Rioja. Almost pickle like oakiness that just barely receded as it was unwinding. Check back in 5-7 years. I really liked it by the end of the bottle, but that oak???

12/10/2020 4:00:00 PM - So strange about the oak. Every source I could find says that the wine sees no new oak and only 660 gallon Salvonian casks. I haven’t had my ‘10s yet but will be on the lookout for this.

After tasting the ‘10 Costanti at a Vinous 2010 Brunello dinner last fall and finding it a bit advanced, I was curious to try another bottle. I purchased one bottle near release from a reputable source in Tuscany.

This bottle seemed in line with the bottle I had at the Vinous event. Texturally, the wine is fully resolved with smooth tannins, medium body and good acidity. Flavor wise, however, for my tastes this seems a bit past peak and it is time to drink up. I found Smoky red cherry, earth, leather, spices, not unattractive but just lacking much vibrancy.

While it’s possible there are better bottles out there, based on my limited experience it appears this wine isn’t aging very well. That’s hardly unique among 2010 Brunello. A recent bottle of ‘10 Mastrojanni was a bit past peak and lacking vibrancy. A bottle of ‘10 Marroneto Madonna at a vertical of that winemaker a few weeks ago hosted by the importer did not show well, although the bottle of ‘10 Madonna I had last fall was better. I’m just not sure Brunello ages well in general.

A bit subdued & closed, even with some air. Does not seem to be in its prime. I would have guessed it was past its prime, but the CT drinking window suggests it was perhaps too young??

A middle of the road Syrah with subdued dark fruit notes & minearlity plus some tertiary notes of earth & leaves - it was fine as a pairing with weekday dinner, but seems wildly overrated & overpriced.

Opened the same bottle last month and it was a huge disappointment. Could have been affected by the Coravin. Not sure what’s happening but I have 3 bottles left.

Outstanding. In the brick-red phase of it's life so I wouldn't leave too much longer, drinking perfectly now. All the tannins have melted away to leave a lovely, delicately structured wine with soft earthy tones on the nose and a long, savoury gentle finish. Pair this carefully as it would be overpowered by anything vaguely spicy or gamey.

This wine is drinking perfectly now, although I wouldn't leave it too much longer as it's definitely starting to turn the corner. Lovely savoury nose, meaty dark plum palate, soft tannins and a wonderful silky finish. Drink in one sitting as it becomes almost port-like by day 2.

What was I thinking when I bought this? I must have been in an exploratory mindframe, but then, I shouldn't have shoved it onto an inaccessible shelf where I wouldn't find it for 8 years or whatever.

If it was ever any good, it's now weary, stale and unprofitable. Ponderous, syrupy, and dull. It's not BAD, per se, just a thick mass of faded prune-like brambly fruit that breaks down in the mid-palate on its way to a weak yet hot finish. Could be my fault entirely cause who knows how long this is supposed to last? I may have to get a jump on spring cleaning my cellar, or perhaps the more appropriate term is winter pruning?

Update: for those of you who may not have seen my notes before-I never look at any other notes before tasting and recording my own. But I was struck by two things after I made my initial posting. First, the community seems to love this wine, so maybe I just got an off bottle. I don't recognize it from any of the 90 or so other mostly positive notes. Second, the wildly favorable "professional" review is from Gary Vaynerchuk. As my father used to say, "you pays your money, you takes your chances."

The cork broke. There was an initial “funk” but it blew off. Bottle has been open approx 2 hrs.

Appearance - clear (except for the occasional piece of wayward cork). Medium plus plus (2 times) ruby.

Nose - youthful, medium plus intensity, fresh, ripe, black and red fruits, baking spices. Some alcohol burn on nose and you can feel it a bit in eyes. Pepper, charred wood.

Palate - bracing acidity. Not bad, but it definitely says “hello.” It’s a powerful wine. Better with food. Flavors linger on palate. Acidity, vibrant fruit, and then the tannins on the finish. They linger after you swallow and hide out af the tops of your gums. The dryness beckons the next taste. Medium plus body. ABV listed as 13.5 but feels like it should be higher.

This is an interesting eye opener for anyone who tells you that Merlot is a blending grape and you wouldn’t want to drink it on its own. I wouldnt guess this in a blind taste. I would assume it was a hybrid new world blend, West coast producer, with the addition of some Italian grapes.

Fresh sweet ripe fruit yet a very dry wine. It’s powerful on the palate and then you feel parched. It’s the tannins. You end thirsty but there is no after feel of sour. Just dry. Enjoy with a glass of water and a meal that has some flavors. I’m enjoying it with a tagine, I suspect this could pair with A Peking duck or BBQ flavors. Asian flavors.

This was inoffensive, but in a world where literally any other Ridge wine exists, why would you drink this (and why would they make this)? To paraphrase Jurassic Park, it seems like the winemaker was “so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”

Rich, quite large, but still in a fresh and charming way with cherries, hints of stable, strong dark spices, leather and graphite. Good full-bodied and quite dense Brunello so far with concentrated cherry fruit, hints of vanilla, spices, leather, licorice and salt. Lighter fruit edge on a slightly demanding and firm finish with tannins that speak for themselves. But this one has the components to build a few years, but be careful. Unfortunately, Brunello's cellar potential has deteriorated over the years. But this manages fine 5-10 years. Very good wine. 91 points.

3/25/2021 9:36:00 AM - Good note, I agree on the cellaring potential deteriorating in the recent past. Why do you think that is? Winemaking techniques? I’ve found a lot of bottles with volatile acidity, which is obviously a flaw but not fatal. Picking grapes too late? I have found that the huge scoring wines lately are wines aged in some amount of French oak but I’m not really interested in that style, though it should increase aging potential.

Hard time justifying $33. Brickish on opening, not much in the nose, tannic with little fruit. Thinner than I would have expected for a brunello. 3 hour decant. Next time it will be a 3 hour decant with Vinturi and see if it is any better. I wish I did not have 8 more bottles.

  • Comment posted by TheBosWineGuy:

Decanted 90 minutes. Ruby to black in color. Bright spiced blackberry and blueberry nose. Heavy bodied, moderate acidity, dry, tannic, and fruity. Palate of blueberries, currants, blackberries, and cherries. Heavy round tannins. Moderate fruity blueberry and blackberry finish with black pepper and tarragon.

This is fruity and approachable with a decent decant, but the wine seems to be lacking personality. I rather spend the time and decant a bottle of the Lytton Estate Syrah instead of drinking this.
