Super Bowl 2015 (Roswell, GA): Dense chocolate core with garnet rim; earth, tart, currant, cherry, orange oil, tobacco, some Brett; fleshy, silky initially, luxurious, grainy tannin comes in later, strong mid-palate, funk, medicinal; very good but not a wine I could drink a ton of because of the lower acid; voted WOTN.

2/10/2015 9:16:00 PM - Thanks for the note. I can empathize with that!
A lot of times I say funk, cow pie, barnyard or sweaty horse saddle. In Pauillac it's cow pie but it's not from Brett and there are other soil driven notes that can be funk but not Brett. This bottle showed some Brett with a bitter note that detracts from the fruit a bit and I get a certain sensation on my tongue. I envision dank, dirty cellars with barrels needing to be replaced (not going to name any ames...Pegau...Bonneau) and think of how beautiful these wines would be without it.
Just a note, provenance would not attribute to this scourge. It is an anaerobic yeast that gets put into the bottle with the wine. Just like cork taint, individuals may have an unfair amount of bottles with these flaws in their cellars, but they have no bearing in spawning them. Sorry if I'm being preachy.
This bottle was great, but it was a reluctant 95. To many not sensitive to Brett or odd balls that like it, this would have been 100 points.
    Anyway, cheers to clean bottles!

Decanted for 3 hours; still very vibrant color showing little color change at rim, some clarity; nose is classic Bordeaux but not yet delineated, red cherry, red currant, lots of red fruit all very round, a sharp green pepper note, cedar, tobacco in the background, slight chocolate; palate is impressive and subtle at the same time, soft silky entry, medium plus body but caressingly rich on the mid palate, ripe and polished tannin from the vintage, purity to the sweet red fruit, great acid lift, love the drinkability, long finish not driven by alcohol; a bit deceptive due to its elegance and drinkability, phenomenal balance, extremely graceful and noble; my style of Bordeaux; possibly just exiting its primary stage so this still has loads of potential, 96+.

It provided immense pleasure after 2-3 hours of air but I could also see popping this in 40-50 years too. Essentially, whenever you are willing to pop this wine, it will be ready.

Tuesday Night $20-$40 Double Blind (Bin 75): Wow, this is not what I was expecting from a young vintage of this wine, it shows phenomenal balance, sweet but not overripe fruit, pleasant grip, larger alcohol but it doesn't stand out, also good acid keeps this fresh; a complete package that I expect to age gracefully for 20+ years; one of the most exciting young wines to date.

Leo's Blind Tasting Group - July '13 edition (Cookshop, NY): Just a fantastic bottle of Kabinett. So pure, elegant and precise with leafy/forestal aromas (that had me wondering if this might be a Grünhaus) and gentle smoky, petrol and mineral accents framing pure citrus and green apple fruit. There's still an incredible sense of freshness and brightness here, understated sweetness matched by razor sharp acidity, and this is just spectacular - I preferred this to any of my experiences with the '83 Zilliken GKAs.

Summer Mondo Event $200+ (Roswell, GA): Definitely a woo nose not dissimilar to Krug Mesnil, bread dough, rich and lush, lacy and silken, honeydew, eggy and almost dessert-like, still super fresh and not even 2ry, Grand Cru weight and power, elegant and refined mousse, generous dosage; killer stuff but even though it is so generous it still kind of begs for food, would be a great backdrop for elevated and complicated dishes especially something salty.

I was lucky to be served two glasses of this on Friday night. While still very young, it was surprising to me just how good it is drinking now. It will be interesting to see in 10 years if this vintage rises to the level of the 2002 Krug.

10/20/2022 4:50:00 AM - I thought the wine was of very high quality. I'm a big fan of TRB and found that his ability to make serious wines accessible in their youth is a wonderful trait. This Howell Mountain fruit is just a little raw, rugged, and too young for my tastes at the present- no knock on TRB and actually admire it more as the terroir is represented nicely.

  • Comment posted by Rezy13:

5/28/2015 7:09:00 AM - My bottle opened just over a month ago tasted great because it came out of a proper cellar. The same may not be said about the one Tuesday. It is a little scary if provenance can change a wine this young so much.

Yowza. Best young Tuscan I've ever had, and I drink more Tuscan wine than anyone else I know. Black cherry, licorice, fennel, herbs and spices on the nose. Very similar to an excellent Fuligni Riserva from the same vintage, but offers an extra jolt of power and concentration without being any more extracted. Invigorating acid. I'm amazed this isn't even the Riserva. Right in my stylistic wheelhouse. Must buy more from this producer.

Very dark red core with pale maroon rim, good extraction; a hint of vanilla, cherry, raspberry, seems like a plush texture; slightly nutty, raspberry, cherry, tart, grainy, mineral, almost wood tannin on the finish, some oak, good focus, higher alcohol, smoky; really opened up with some air exhibiting dark rich fruit, lots of garrigue, more of a sandy component, and lots of black pepper; initially on Xavier Anonyme but I was not getting the galets or the hard red fruit of CdP so I called '09 St. Cosme Les Claux (the vineyard 15 feet away); one of the best Gigondas I've had; still upside potential, 94+; need to get some.

On the other hand Chris has recently popped several times the 1997 St. Cosme regular Gigondas that has still been good. I loved the Hominis Fides young and think another year or two should do it well. I do, however, insist that I help evaluate the bottle(s) when you decide to open them;) Would love to get a bottle or two of this but they're impossible to find.

Light straw with green hues; nose is floral and fresh, petrichor and spring flowers, really beautiful and driving, elegance and nuance, there is a candied lime, guava, taut green and yellow fruit, so focused this could fool you as very good White Burgundy, love the complexity, next to the Taille Aux Loups 2015 this showed a little more precision and complexity with promising future but what a 1-2 Chenin punch!, I also have to admit to liking this more than the Guiberteau Breze's I've had; day 2 this has opened up further exhibiting a kiss of honey, a little more peach classic quince and glazed apple, feels like it has lost a little intensity and focus, the wood usage is still very discreet and no reduction, this is fleshier and classy on the palate showing slight oxidation and nuttiness but still feel the development should be very nice over time.

1/16/2014 2:55:00 PM - Yes, many of the wines we drink at the wine bar are from next door at Hinton's. Wines from d'Angerville are really brilliant and feel it is top-tier Volnay. I'm jealous you got some. Being more on the hedonistic side now the candied fruit and oak should tone down with more age. The balance makes this a great candidate to age gracefully for probably as long as you'd like to cellar it. Keep me posted on it.
