2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche

La Tâche Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

2002 DRC La Tache - this beaut of a wine has hit that perfect moment where the primary opulence is strutting in full display like a peacock but with the maturity to know, maybe don’t be strutting all those feathers in a crowded street in Arcadia and get run over.

The nose is an intoxicating perfume of saddlewood, baking spice, stem and fresh red berries. The palate is incredibly expressive and robust that fully fills the already impressive amount of width that the wine has with gobs of fresh acid driven fruit and has enough age to soften the edges where you don’t feel the youthful exuberance of fruit is too much. At this point the wine feels integrated enough where everything drinks so seamlessly on the palate, you really have to look for any youthful rough edges. Unlike the 2000/2001 where you are picking up a lot more of the secondary characters this one is still fully primary in the best way and can be held for many many more years.

Decanted at the restaurant, consumed immediately. Needed that rush of oxygen to really bloom with that wild snappy fruit nose. Palate is far more textured and less silky than the bottle I opened a couple weeks ago (different retailers) and more in line with what I'm used to with Juge with that bright prickly minerality on the palate. Such a great wine, happy to share it with those that haven't tried Juge yet.

cracking good wine with a couple hours of air. Started off fairly shy but becomes this vibrant intoxicating pear and lemon fruit that has powerful weight and a saturating waxy texture. Acidity is a fine dose without being overwhelming. Gonna be really good with some time. Every vintage of this wine just gets more and more in tune. One of my absolute favorite wines made in Meursault from one of the masters of Meursault

Dark spice driven fruit with high intensity and saturating mouthfeel. It's a big wine but not heavy thanks to the ample cooling acidity, the material is expansive - that right line between too much and just enough. Still some tannin on the back end but drinking great right now.

I think I like these wines best at this stage - the style is so delicate and light that I find the fruit grows tired after a dozen or more years of age (I haven’t tried enough old bottles to have a strong conviction, though.)

This, though, is absolutely exuberant and full of life. I enjoyed it over two nights and found the barely-there VA and violets in the aroma gave way to more savory and meaty notes on day two. There are some tannins present but they’re barely noticeable, and acidity is good. I have a very hard time seeing how this gets better with age given that so much of the allure lies in the counterpoint between the fading fruit and the savory components. I would love comments or suggestions from those with more experience with how these wines age.

Nice surprise, quite spry aromas and palate. Earthy, fresh and varnished. Lots of complexity and evolution in the glass.

Sharing the same bottle of wine with friends - Covid 19 style: what else needs to be said that I haven’t said before. The x novo from @walterscottwines is the best chardonnay made in America. Not only that it’s probably the best chardonnay period at the price point. The 2018 is one of the best vintages I’ve had from them, really dense concentrated wine with that hallmark reduction/flint and incredible length that lingers long into the finish. If there’s a vintage to load up on it’s definitely this one from them. I regret not getting a 3L during the futures offer.

dense and pure wine. There's just so much stuffing with this structure completely filled in with smokey rich berries and olive. It started to really amp up in depth as a hour went by as the tannins softened and everything kicked up a notch. Will age really well but it's damn near impossible to keep my hands off these right now.

I love the extra bit of dryness on the champagne. It gives it a biting acidity that I actually think goes against the natural oxidative style of Selosse. Full of bright apple fruit and minerality, focused but still plush with flavor. Really nice.

The nose was dark, brooding and intense with black fruits up front giving way to sweet and savory herbs with peppery spices, smoke, moist earth and animal musk. On the palate, I found smooth, silky textures that washed across the senses with masses of black fruit, spice and saturating minerals, yet lively acidity kept it all in balance. The finish was long and savory as mineral and earth tones lingered over a coating of black fruits and fine tannin.

2014 Vatan is in the ZONE right now. The nose is brimming with hay, lemon grass, sweet ripe melon. It's broad oily saturated melon fruit cut with some citrus acid on the back end. I'm surprised how open and voluminous the wine is compared to how narrow the 15/16/17 are. We befriended a couple of Americans on their honeymoon and poured them some - "This doesn't taste like Sauv blanc from back at home" HA!

I thought I had this wine pinned down pretty quickly, it showed lots of white flower and crunchy lemon on the nose and this textured crushed pill lemon drop, slate and wax on the palate that just reminded me of Chenin Blanc. A couple others at the table agreed. But when it was revealed.. it was this. That 20% Savagnin really shines through on the wine, giving it that wax coating texture and it tends to mellow out the ripeness and acid of the chardonnay. Really interesting wine. Glad I got to try it.

10/8/2020 3:01:00 PM - If you try their 100% chardonnay it's way more acidic than the sauv/chard blends they make
