I don't know if it was my bottle or just the wine, but it smelled and tasted like my teenage son's soaked, stinky soccer socks. I could not get past that. I'm sorry.

4/2/2022 3:13:00 PM - I think your bottle was flawed. I listened to it again and I think they are confused between reduction and brett. This is the fifth Limnio I've had and most of my notes mention funky elements. But I am by no means 100 on this.

8,5% alcohol.

Pale lime green color. Stunningly unpleasant nose that makes you gag almost instantly; sulphurous H2S stench of rotten eggs, crude oil and sewage. A textbook example of the aroma that the Germans call Böckser. Contrasting the nose, the wine feels fresh, bright and steely on the palate with moderate, balanced residual sugar sweetness and flavors of ripe yellow apples, some sweeter citrus fruits and hints of white flowers - although there lingers a faint hint of hard-boiled eggs in the background. Good acidity. The finish is quite long, lively and fresh with flavors of citrus fruits, fresh apples and a hint of steely minerality.

Because of the overwhelming Böckser aroma, I will not score this wine at this point. I know Böckser is very typical of young Mosel Rieslings - especially sweeter ones - and it normally fades over with time, so probably this wine will turn out quite nice with age. Now it tasted very primary and one-dimensional with the Böckser clouding much of my judgement, so there is no point assessing the wine. Unless you want to enjoy your wines smelling like boiled eggs, you'll want to keep this wine for 4-5 years more before opening it.

Calling it corked, but I am not wholly sure. Not on the nose which was de minimus , but the palate was severely torqued with severe green notes and felt utterly off. Confirmed from another taster un-primed. Even with hours in decanter, never got cork on the nose but the wine was marginally tolerable at best.

So weird - pro tasting notes going back 3-4 years and just one user note.

(Poured at the domain from a freshly opened bottle) Nose is popcorn and petrol. Crisp and direct. Acidity is more pear focused. Good body and precision with a lot of enjoyment that I don't expect from a young CFE. OTOH, came across really basic and honestly a bit boring.

I really had no idea going into this whether it was going to be drinkable or a fire-breathing dragon. First sip resolves all uncertainty and it is not only drinkable but effortlessly so, and captivating. Primary red berry scents and flavors meld with cedary pencil shavings to give this a Bordeaux-like profile but few Bordeaux can aspire to be so classy - the texture is just ravishingly finessed in a way that only a couple properties at the top of the 1855 classification or in the ritzy part of Pomerol achieve. It is just pure satin. It's that quality the UK writers call "breed" which I can't say I've ever experienced from Cahors or malbec anywhere - refined, but not *merely* refined, everything measured and knit together just-so, the hand of a master tailor evident not just in the fabric but the drape. If you were lucky enough to buy this, you have a treasure.

5/10/2023 12:54:00 PM - I am drinking the '18 now and your note is spot on for that as well (love the deft analogy of fabric and drape.) I am now going to go down a rabbit hole wondering if the clones for this VdVC is the same as what was brought to AR as I see way more similarities with the truly great AR ones vs what is now in Cahors.

In a really good place. Savory elements coming out - mushroom, meat, leather - with a solid base of dark fruit. Structure hold these two in tension. This is a point where I really enjoy Bdx and this delivers that Claret-dance quite well.

  • Comment posted by AndrewSGHall:

12/5/2012 5:03:00 AM - I don't understand scores. This is a good example. Would a score reflect some notion of how a minor cru Bdx should age or that my personal enjoyment is probably maximized at this crux point? Except as ranking preferences, I find score to be false precision.

Literally the same experience as my last with a pristine bottle and a surprise crumbly cork. The wine itself was in great condition, drinking much younger than its years. It was my last bottle and I almost wish I had saved it.
Pnp and then drank over several hours while it warmed up from cellar temp. Opened on a whim to compare with a 1998 Peyre Rose Clos de Cistes which was the theme of our dinner. They were equally good but mind blowing they could be the same grape at the same age. The Lewis was much more primary and full of purple fruit, with hints of savory and spice that should become more prominent in future years.
A fun experiement.

Can't really complain for the price. It's red fruited, lightly cedary, and easy to drink, but I have had more distinguished vintages from Cantemerle than this where these qualities are more harmonious and combined with a seductive texture. Here it just lacks its usual charm and feels more in a cru bourgeois mold.

Bonkers nose- barberry, weird spices in the souk with a little gaminess. Honestly, this nose is just sick amazing. Great fruit. Soft on structure but so so glou glou. There is serious shadow lord dark fruits and a prevailing perverted funk. Hot two stroke and brambley hillside berries, if I have to. Eschewing specific descriptors because the gestalt is just so stunning and complete.

Austere nose with a Chablis-reminding-me shells and peach and splashing salinity. Really complex and unfolding. Bright acidity with broad shoulders and restrained passion fruit, a quince-bitters backing. Really deep vibes that are different than Santorini. Drops a really great oily texture with almost slate elements and the fruit lengthens, brightens with time. A really dynamic wine.

This was sick. For about 45 minutes was generic natty Syrah and then bukakke of dank vibes with blackberry fruit and smoke and hot tobacco and musky perfume. Dialed into a wave and never wavered. This was just intense and beautiful. No VA or other flaws. While also a dual label and imported by Source, is not really very Rotie. And even at 12.5 just bitch slapped at modern WA wine open at same time. Wow. A primal wine.
