2009 Miner Family Cabernet Sauvignon Benedetto

Napa Valley more

9/8/2018 - bestdamncab Likes this wine: 94 points

Bright, rich beet red color in the glass. Nose of black cherry, black berry, hint of licorice, and dusty earth, better nose the second day than the first, more of the same on the palate, big body, mouth filling fruit, secondary characteristics tonight suggest it has reached it's peak drinking window, CT shows 106 bottles out there so time to open and enjoy, showing lots of black cherry on the mid palate, lovely, long, flavorful finish and aftertaste. This wine is the top cabernet sauvignon and the only single vineyard cabernet sauvignon of Miner Family, sold only at the winery. Worth the search.

Drinking EXCEPTIONALLY well right now. Such a smooth integration of Cali fruit/tannins/oak and acidity softening just the slightest. Has plenty of time left but for me this is in a great window right now, today! Cali fruit with a feminine BDX cellar treatment. This is one enjoyable wine!

Nice wine. Pnp.....mid weight, bright red in the glass and bright red cherry fruit up front. A little tart to start with, better over time. A nice little drinker, a tinge acidic but it carried thru well. Forget what I paid for it at the time, but if it was more than $60, I wouldn't buy again. If $40-50, it's a nice bottle.

This is a wonderful Chardonnay that a little decant did wonders. The evocative yellow gold color coming from the age on this single vineyard Chard, along with the round lush mouth feel. Flavors of Meyer lemon, dried banana chips, pineapple okay, toasted almonds, medium oak, some minerality and butterscotch coming out on the medium length tasty smooth finish. Was a very nice pairing with the tomato based Spanish fish stew.

Drinking brilliantly. Floral notes on nose, unctuous mouth feel. Stone fruit and minerality with the right balance of acid. We powered thru the bottle at lunch.

Very rich Marsanne, with butterscotch and oaky character and ripe stone fruit core. Quite a big wine, but it all sort of works together. On the finish, there is a sake-ness about the flavor and mouth sensations. I wish I had more than one bottle of this. At $20 from Last Bottle (vs. $30 on their site), it was a good buy, especially with free shipping only 3 bottles. I will look out for this producer again (although this was a collaboration between Miner and François Villard in the Rhône).

Still young, and when popped and poured it showed the Rosella's grapefruit and spices. Great nose. On day 2, there was a bit more dark red fruit, so I'm not sure what to make of this. Will it age gracefully or should I drink my other bottle soon?

This was a really interesting wine. Light golden color with an almost light brown tint. Nutty, bready, vanilla and stone fruit nose, and a touch of alcohol. Full bodied, oily, and viscous on the palate, with nut oil, marshmellow, and a bit of an herbal note. Alcohol is definitely spiking on the finish as well. Low to moderate acid and long finish, but the alcohol is carrying it on the back end. I'm really torn on this wine; on the one hand I want to give it 92-94 for its interesting qualities, texture and finish, but on the other the heat detracts and I'd love to trade some of it for some acid instead. This is a big boy, hedonistic white that I think will be polarizing. Wish I had more to age a bit and see what happens.

Tasted at Miner Family Winery today with their Sommelier. Poured from a magnum opened one hour earlier. Lovely black cherry fruit and dust on the nose, more of the same on the palate, sharp, angular fruit on the mid palate, rich sweet/sour cherry fruit tasting, medium body, and medium/long finish.

2014 Miner Family The Oracle

5/31/2019 - jdtonic Likes this wine: 93 points

One of really only two wines to cut thru a pretty standard-plus tourist/Bataan march of easily forty 60-160 buck Napa cabs, in eight houses. The other was a Kelly Fleming 14.

Sometimes I go along. Rarely quietly. Did ok yesterday tho. (Some folks were tasting the whites too! I was concerned that I might never enjoy wine again, and nursed watered-down cape codders at dinner —with effort.)

Could definitely use another year or two underground, but this 2014 Oracle has good flavors, texture, mouthfeel and balance here right out of the gate. EAT WITH FOOD!
A standout beverage, among those sourced and sold in this valley at this price.

Deep opaque ruby purple. Intense cassis, granite, red plum, and —- let’s say “clean wool/wet soil/olive tapenade/aggregate stew.” Palate tired.
But The intensity — wow—and the sharpness of the black currant fruit liquor and her minerals elements here recalls immediately like either a pubescent Latour-a-pomerol or juvenile Graves of good quality and provenance. Great balance, ((tho I’ve had toobmuch wine to measure finish tbh. And I will have to re-taste to confirm the notes—))
But a persistent and tasty, and well-structured wine.

Easily the Best drink tasted here since.. ok.. hmmm... why try this?? Dunno the othersuro good one ::: This is One of only two times I found a bottles for sale here to lay down. Another time I got one to I see upside, personally, but I’m wrong a third of the time — ok I will report back if suits me/ wine survives. ((Hoping for 150-200 buck Napanook Dunn return flavored on this 70 buck Oracle blend play)) ((Dunn. Graves. Pomerol.)) hybrid

Ok— it is coming back vis: my previous Miner overachiever: I had, I believe, something like a ‘97 or 2001 Flagship miner in late 2006 on a tip from a local female punchdowner— And all of these — (equally, I mean: the wine tip, the lady-factotum, [then working at Green and Red] who provided the tip, and the 1997 Miner Cabernet ) - I found to be Very enjoyable bargains. THOSE three bottles of whatever it was by MINER- did indeed improve steadily —and punch (up) above weight class until gone. (And the friendship with that human chick failed. Of course.) That’s my memory.

Anyhoo—- so I check in at Miner every 3-4 years, and never any regret there, purchases made or nay. Miner is old school and if you’re industry or just a pushy snob willing to pay to taste what indeed you hope to buy, is... always.. and forever..

. ..A friendly house, improved now, elevator option to a nice porch facing West across the Silverado (and off the beaten-) Trail toward the sinking sun and the Great Calm Sea. The Miner vibe is more relaxed than most, and so, particularly if a good wine is found, can be very RELAXING. Sunsets here are recommended.

No doubt miner has sourced great berries, though the Franc still bosses her Merlot. Wait another year. Or decant 2-3 hours. Hope this “Oracle” is a “Harbinger” as well.
Thanks Miners.

Very consistent with my earlier note; raspberry flavors dominate the palate with some cherry and sous bois. Not incredibly complex for an 18yo wine, but fun to drink and still in good shape. This wine will not improve; would recommend near-term consumption.

Damn, this is just amazing. 87% CS and 13% CF. A solid 91 Pointer IMHO. Decanted for 2 hours. This is big, deep, rich, dark and powerful. Aroma is big. Taste follows with medium acidity and tannins, but great balance! Big fruit, primarily dark cherry and blue and a touch of vanilla and oak. This is just so big. Wish I was better at picking out individual flavors, especially in a great wine! Miner’s winery notes also mentioned licorice noted, which I did not catch until later.

Had this up at Mammoth Lakes (8.5K elevation) with an exceptionally bold and savory Bison Meatloaf with a Peppercorn Sauce (to die for). My favorite meal up here. I really can’t think of another wine I’ve had in 6+ months that could have stood up to this meal! My mouth and tummy are doing somersaults of joy!

Drunk over a couple of days, on day one I thought it was a little disjointed and out of sorts. On day 2, it had come together beautifully with plenty of red fruit, good acidity and balanced tannins. Drinking perfectly right now, I don't know whether to drink my last two bottles or hold on to one for a few more years. Terrific stuff.

We brought this to a new neighborhood Lebanese restaurant that does not have a liquor license yet, consequently they asked us to drink the wine out of coffee cups. I think it added to the charm of a lovely evening. The wine could have benefited from decanting, and started out kind of 'dusty' and funky. A surprising amount of tannins still left with fading fruit that balanced out over the evening. Not one of my favorite wines, but then my wife loved it.
