Sagrantino Day International (Rome, Piazza Colonna - Sala Angiolillo nella sede de Il Tempo): Anteprima tasting. Sweet/ripe fruit, smooth/powdery tannins; lovely. Outstanding expression of Sagrantino varietal character. Never heard of this producer before. It was the WOTN and the surprise of the night. 95

Black, dense. Clean, earthy, with dark fruits and roasted kernels. High level of rich and powdery tannins, still a little astringent, highish acidity, full bodied, great length and complexity.

Trip to Montefalco; 10/11/2008-10/12/2008 (Montefalco): Black and dense. Ample, sweet aromas; 60 g/L RS, but acidity is higher than the 2007; the oak has mellowed. Tannins, grape and oak, help balance the sweetness. Big and brawny, yet exquisite.

Black core, ruby rim, dense. Clean earth and fruit on nose and palate. Subtle oak. Flavour profile equally fruity and savoury. High acidity, high alcohol, high level of grippy/powdery tannins. Rich, full-bodied, long, complex. Love this wine every time.

Trip to Montefalco; 10/11/2008-10/12/2008 (Montefalco): Barrel tasting from the outstanding 2007 vintage. Deep purple. Persistent and intense on nose and palate. Big fruitiness imparting sensation of sweetness that will take on the new oak without compromise; big earthiness and minerality too. Lowish acidity, high level of beautiful/ripe tannins. Very long and complex. For release in 2010. To buy.

Trip to Montefalco; 10/11/2008-10/12/2008 (Montefalco): Anteprima from bottle. Fairly ordinary vintage in Montefalco. Dense, purple. In a closed phase for aromatics and flavour. Powerful oak that will mellow; fruit in background. Higher acidity than the others. Difficult to judge its future, but it will likely not be as good as 2005 or 2007. Probably will skip all 2006's from Montefalco. For release in 2009.

Trip to Montefalco; 10/11/2008-10/12/2008 (Montefalco): Anteprima. Lovely wine. Black and dense. Alcohol at 16%; RS around 60 g/L, but lowish acidity made it seem sweeter. The oak (11 months in barrique) has tempered the wine and given it better balance.

Dag 1 : fles geproefd onmiddellijk na openen : vrij harde smaak, vrij alcoholisch, wel lekker
Dag 2 : zeer warme, mondvullende smaak van donker fruit (braambessen), prachtig aroma.

Rustic, funky, tasty. Dark fruits, earth, spice. Well-integrated oak. Should drink well for at least 5 years, probably 10. Full writeup: http://pavineco.com/?p=2824

2nd bottle wasn't as good as the first, and I've seen other reports of some bottle variation here. Just a little tight and green.

Bottle #3 was back up to the standard set by #1. Perhaps some bottle variation here, but worth rolling the dice for $14. Full writeup: http://pavineco.com/?p=2824

Non certo per signorine. Passito maschio, pieno di profumi e sapori di legno affumicato e uva passa sotto spirito. Abbinabile ad un bell'arrosto come ad un sigaro. Interessante
