The best bottle of this I have ever tasted! Perhaps it's due to reaching maturity at 25 years of age, or maybe the cork was perfect. The provenance was right as I have held this since close to release. Regardless, from start to finish, this was heart-stopping! The wealth of cherries, ranging from white, to red to black, coupled with sweet plums, soaking in kirsch on the nose and palate was gorgeous. But it is the incredible purity of the fruit, the elegance, refinement, length and persistence, with a seamless, silky, 60 second finish that carried it across the triple-digit goal post. Wines like this define what great wines are all about.

Pop and pour, sort of. Much more open than the '09. Again, the strawberry and red orange is there. There is definitely more age\evolution on this one. Vs. the 2009 we felt this has the lesser potential. But more open for business now. Great wine.

Ah the magical perfumed nose of Musigny... but hold on, isn't this a Chateauneuf du Pape?! And so goes yet another enigmatic, somewhat contradictory encounter with Rayas, which has folks (including myself) coughing up alarming amounts of cash for just a few gulps of an obscure wine from a small corner estate in the southern Rhone that reportedly leaves its cellars in appalling conditions. (Having tried to replicate this with my home study, I can confirm that mess does not necessarily produce genius, so the Reynaud family secret may lie elsewhere.) Moving past the nose into the palate, the dark clouds of Grenache start to appear on the otherwise bright pink strawberry horizon. After two hours in decanter, these clouds turn into a veritable black storm of juicy, savory berry, mint and overripe pineapple flavors. At this point, any illusion that we are still lying in some flower meadow outside Chambolle is swiftly dispelled by the sweet and somewhat fiery 14% alcohol. If this note is incoherent and unintelligible, said alcohol bears full responsibility.

Really fun to drink, from a case I bought 25 years ago, I have not had this wine in almost a decade. Not the exuberant pup it once was, and yet it maintains that incredible sex appeal. This became even more evident when we poured a great 90 Cheval Blanc in the next glass, and we could appreciate just how wonderfully slutty the dark cherry, earth and licorice was in this beauty. Singular

Smokey wood on the nose. Some nectarine in there. The palate is a bit woody as well but there are some nice notes of nectarines and caramel. Too young

This bottle, purchased directly from the Chateau, was astonishing. Light in color with an exciting, perfumed nose that whispered rather than shouting, with delicate floral tones, garrigue, griotte cherry, perhaps hints of the famous Kirsch aroma (but just a hint). Light yet balanced, long, endless. A revelation.

2022 Excellent Burgundy Adventure; 10/31/2022-11/6/2022 (Burgundy): The first of the two 2010 Rayas in this trip. Explosive nose displaying incredibly concentrated opulent black fruit, black cherry, blackberry pie, lavender, licorice, grilled NY strip, strong tobacco, garrigue, black olives, white pepper and earth. Unbelievable concentration, layers upon layers of explosive black fruit, rich and unctuous but also fluid, perfect balance, and the finish that never ends. Absolutely stunning wine.

After 3 unsuccessful attempts to visit Chateau Rayas, we resort to tasting Emmanuel's wines, 2009 Chateau Rayas Reserve CDP and 2013 Chateau des Tours Reserve Vacqueyras, at a Michelin restaurant in Avignon. Okay, double checks on our bucket list.

We discussed which vintage of Ch Rayas Reserve from 2000 to 2012 to select from. We decided to go with 2009 as my fellow winemaker friend has had tasted a number of vintages (especially thought the tannin of 2010 not fully resolved) as well as Emmanuel's style of Burgundian profile might fit 2009 vintage better (also judging from my tasting memory of 2009 Clos des Papas and Mas de Boislauzon cuvee Quet relative to their 2010). After the fact, RP had rated 2009 highest (RP98) ever relative to other past vintages (92-94)!

There are a few striking and unique notable points:
1) IDENTITY: if we were in a blind tasting, I would have guessed it's a top Grand Cru Burgundy pinot noir from cooler vintages. I found it hard to detect any hint of grenache!
2) SENSORY: The most unique sensory experience is its beautiful floral notes manifesting not only on your nose but inside your palate imparting floral flavor profile I can't say I ever had such experience with such intensity level). The aromatics keeps ongoing like an Energizer bunny into Day 2 (yes, we saved 1/3 for checking out its stamina).
3) BALANCE: The texture is ethereal and its finesse structure is still holding up extremely well even at age 14 and can live on for many years. The flavor profile is red fruit tone (strawberry and kirsch) with its acidity well integrated and concealed. The tannin is uber fine.

I have gathered that there has been bottle variations. One of my winemaker friends said the flavor profile was darker when he had the 2009 a couple years ago. We found the 2013 Ch. des Tours has a more uplifting and complex bouquet but its flavor profile is flatter and its texture is less polished than Rayas Reserve. Yes i had had more effusive/intoxicating aromatics from Grand Cru burgundy hitting the nose but they rarely had the floral scent hitting the palate filling it with floral flavor profile.

As it's not a perfect wine but neither was the 2009 vintage, judging from about 15-year window and unique sensory experience (drinking floral notes), i would think this a champion of the 2009 vintage for CDP. Bravo!

Rating: 96-99; 96++ ... could be 98+ if prep well.
If one does not pick up or appreciate the subtlety of its sensory, one could have rated in 88-92 range.

I sadly say there are wines out there that others claim that they are Rayas-like. I hate to burst their bubbles (i have most of those so-called Rayas-like wines in my cellar) and none of them tasted like Rayas except for the sensory component of having stem (some whole clusters) in vlnifiication in combination with light and bright red fruit tone.

Noxious. Like Robitussin. Not only in the sense that it literally tastes like Robitussin, but the sensation is *just like* those kids medicines that taste so vile they have to add a ton of sweetness to make it possible to force even a tiny bit down the gullet, which instead of masking the grossness just makes it taste both gross and grossly sweet.

Has gained a just a little bit on color and weight, but this is still so light and airy, perfumed, floral nose and intense flavors of raspberry fruit, pepper and stones. If tasted blind I’m almost I could confuse this with the 2017 Bertheau Chambolle from the other night. This is how light and elegant this is.

Decanted half hour before dinner. Immediately you get the classic grassy notes in the bouquet. Palate verging on high toned but very refined. More grassy notes then evolving to slightly burnt hay, strawberries, red berry compote, stewed plum. In the last glass hints of leather. Similar to Fonsalette vintages I’ve had if more concentrated and a longer finish. Very Burgundian…are we really drinking Southern Rhone?! 95-96 very singular and unique and really pleasurable to drink.

Notes on Wines from December 2021 (Wellington, NZ): Served double blind by Maciej. A beautiful, luxurious bouquet of plums and tons of ripe berry fruit, spices, dark chocolate and cigar box. Sweet fruit on palate with structure, power and some leathery development. Most tasters had this wine as New World – due to the fruit volume and scale – syrah but I thought it a bold, large scaled, seamless French wine. All clear on the reveal. A classy 100% Grenache Rayas, at the beginning of its optimal drinking plateau. Superb! 95+.

Somehow disapointed by this bottle altghough Rayas is my favorite CDP. Typical nose of crushed strawberries and orange peel, nice concentration, but excessive bitterness with some metallic hints. As the wine warmed up the bitterness became more and more present, and was quite unpleasant to the palate. Not what Rayas should be, and this bottle had nevertheless no default. It should maybe have been consumed earlier?..

Despite being tasted in double-blind fashion, it is hard to mistake the pedigree of this beautiful wine. This bottle, well-cellared and kindly provided by E.P., is medium garnet in color and has an explosively intense nose of chocolate-covered cherries, pipe tobacco, bacon and lavender. It is full-bodied on the palate, with low-to-medium acidity, melted tannins and seamless alcohol (listed as 14%). The flavors mirror the nose and persist nicely throughout the middle palate and the lengthy finish. This fully-mature Rayas is absolutely delightful at this point. Drink it over the next 2-3 years to catch it at its best. Drink now-2016.

Wow, this was excellent last night. I hadn’t opened one in about 5 years, and at that time it was a hot, brambly mess. Last night’s bottle was singing, and my blind tasting group all got to the Rayas part of their guessing immediately. But it was so good, and so typically Rayas, that no one even thought to guess it was Pignan. It was simply assumed that it was the big brother CdP Reservee. A real pleasure.

Friday Night Wines: Initially nose was sweet rich red fruit, herbs for days (oregano, thyme especially). Palate showed red and blue fruit, with sweet oak. After gaining more air, the fruit seems more mellowed, the wine picks up length, and expands on its already seemingly endless complexity. Incredible bottle, but definitely too young. The oak is unbalanced at this point but this should be magic once that resolves.

Now this is something special! Hard to find and even harder to buy - this legendary boutique estate has huge expectations on it from a hyped vintage such as 2007. And I’m here to say it delivers in spades - this is spectacular! Bright ruby in colour. Asian spice aromas with cherries and blood orange form a stunning nose that screams of sex appeal. Light on its feet but immense depth of flavour with impressive purity and perfumed precision scream from the glass. This is remarkable wine that leaves a lasting impression well after the (looong) finish has faded. The heat from this vintage seems entirely irrelevant to this wine and it only improves with more time in the glass. You may have to sell your firstborn to get some but you may well not regret it after you’ve tasted this. 98 points
