Very sweet...too sweet for my liking. It wasn’t a dry wine as I expected. I just wanted a dry white wine to pair it with the frozen fish-sticks. It was the only wine standing alone in the cave of my boss, so I guess it wasn’t something important. Again, very very sweet!

PnP from a .375L ... I just can't imagine this wine ever scoring less than 98 points! Balance is impeccable with the acidity keeping the sweetness in perfect check! Also, the flavor profile on this Sauternes is other-worldly! It is creamy tropical fruit (mango and papaya) with some orange/apricot/peach...with a hint of caramel and toffee. One person at the tasting commented that if he were stranded on an island with only one case of wine, it would be this one! I really need to let some of these bottles age, but it is so hard because they drink so perfect! My highest score--98 points!

Going to call a 'spade' a 'spade' here. Not sure how this grades out as it does. It's thin in the glass and in the mouth. Clean? Yes. But thin, and light. My first ever experience with this Chateau.....I must confess I am a bit disappointed. There's some honey and light yellow fruit but that's about it. Sorry.

En jeroboam. Pretty much secondary now. Copper colored. Coconut, dried fruits. Classic Sauternes sweetness with a good balance yet not tremendously zesty. A good wine but lacks of the verve and complexity of a good botrytised Riesling.

My goodness - what an invigorating young d'Yquem which balances an exotic, tropical personality with perfect freshness. Packed with tropical fruit, touches of classic white flower and parchment, a hint of 06-like bergamot. This is so perfectly balanced on the palate and has loads and loads of everything. It's surprisingly delicious now, but make no mistake - this is infanticide. Don't open these now. Wait a decade (or more if you can). 97+

2002 Château d'Yquem

Beautiful wine; unmistakeably Yquem that just makes you smile and shake your head in a “how do they do that…??” moment. Powerful and intense botrytissy apricots plus honey, musk and gentle spices, citrus leaves and some marmalade, in a luscious and complex palate. Another great example of the elegance of the 2002; superbly balanced and integrated, and with a very long and authoritative finish with just the right amount of grip.

From a 375ml bottle, this was a superb example, bright golden in colour, and with a long time ahead of it. It reinforced my view that:
• the 2002 is a vastly better wine than that other less expensive Yquem of the era, the 1999 (which is way short of botrytis, and is heavier and less well balanced – sorry, ’99 lovers);
• I prefer it even to the well regarded 1997 (which has loads of botrytis, and has more flavour than the 2002 but the 1997 is not as elegant or beautifully balanced; in particular I’ve had a few bottles with somewhat prickly oak on the finish);
• the 2002 can’t quite match the magnificent 2003, which is an upscale and full-on version of everything delicious about the 2002;
• the amazing 2001 is still the best Yquem I’ve drunk in 30 years of enjoyment of this wonderful label (will review it again soon!).

The Return of Guys Night Out!: This was a .375 and PnP. This wine is simply amazing and confirms my judgement as being the best Sauternes I have ever tasted, including the legendary 2001. I love this Sauternes, and again, it shows impeccable balance between sweetness and acidity, so as to come across as creamy fruit, wrapped in citrus, wrapped in caramel, and followed by a long, delicious finish. Love this wine! As close to perfection as I have had! Enthusiastic 98 (my highest score)!!

2003 Château d'Yquem

D'Yquem 2003 - Much ado about nothing.

When I have d'Yquem au menu, I give up being rational. Both ways, and I'm usually dithyrambic... partly because uncorking d'Yquem is not daily bread, and partly because there's something indefinable behind this sober and elegant label that is very unfair to other contenders on the Ciron's banks : if you've had a chance to taste such vintages as 1975, 1988, 2001, 2007 and even the more "modest" 1989, you know what I mean. And if you're unfortunate enough to have stored a few cases of 2003, then, you have a problem. At least : I have a problem.

2003 was indeed a challenging year marked by an unprecedented heat wave where inspired winemakers created beauties in Sauternes and Barsac - Coutet 2003 brought me down to my knees! - but the sprinkle of genius did not illuminate Yquem. Not at all. Let me be straightforward : this-is-a-very-disappointing-wine. Period. And if you wish to live the d'Yquem 2003 experience without having to pay the entry fee for the legend, here are 3 alternatives that will save you time and money :

1. Meet my grand mother. Or just pay her a visit when she cares of her oak furniture (that's usually on Tuesday): the intoxicating smell of turpentine backed by a contradictory scent of beeswax will give you a clear idea of the olfactory impressions of this vintage. Absolutely nothing (exotic fruits, white flowers) can survive to such a mess swirl of indelicate fragrances.

2. Fix yourself an Aperol x Spritz, without Proseco. Or sip a shot of Bitter San Pellegrino. The coarseness of bitters, the ubiquitous and unmelted sugars and the dryness on the finish will get you as close as one can get to where d'Yquem 2003 can take you.

3. Let dry an orange peel for a couple weeks : once it has reached the consistence of a candied fruit, chew it. Let it melt in your mouth for a while and blame me for having suggested this rather painful experiment.

Such a disappointment would be excusable if I only had that impression once. But statistics don't lie, and the 3 bottles from 2 different cases I´ve drunk over the past 6 months gave me and my guests the same consistent impression of a perfectly failed wine.

Some Special Wines with a New Friend....well, sort of new! (Jason's House): First, this was opened on the evening of the 12th...we just had finished a .375 of the 2009 Yquem, which was my benchmark Sauternes. After everyone left, I coravined this wine for Marvin to compare (I also wanted to compare, especially since it had been a while since I tasted one of these) with the 2009. The 2009 Yquem has never disappointed, and certainly did not disappoint with this showing. I have repeatedly stated I just cannot imagine a better Sauternes....well, that was shattered with this wine, and my first score higher than 98, i.e., the first time a benchmark wine was surpassed!

This wine had everything the 2009 had, impeccable balance, honeyed, but not cloying fruit, a creamy texture and a super-long finish, but more intensity than the 2009....it took Sauternes to new level, and is finally (for me) living up to its hype! An awesome wine that everyone should experience at least once! 99 points, and new benchmark for me!

This is d'Yquem light. If you're a fan of vintages like 1999, you will like this more than I did. The fruit is sweet, soft and open. There is a nice honeyed, tropical character to the wine, but it lacks the concentration and depth found in the top years for this wine.

I purchased this wine in the last year from a very reputable retailer (the SAQ in fact). 375ml. Colour was a dark amber, almost like burnt sugar. When I compared the colour to my 1990s, this wine was much darker, and appears to have matured very quickly. I'm wondering if this is representative for this wine, and any comments would be appreciated.
On the nose, the wine did not smell at all maderised, and certainly did not taste that way either. It tasted like a very aged, mature Yquem. The fruit was vibrant and complex, and the acidity was in balance.
Not as mind-blowing as many Yquems I've had.

Tasted at the Arvi Bordeaux 2015 event in Zurich.

A lot of depth. Warm spiceyness. Soft edges. Homogeneous. My friend’s comment on this says it all: “Knocks my socks off!”. Every facette of this wine is exactly where it should be. The winner of the day for me. Hard to imagine any sweet wine could be any better than this.

Memorial Day Weekend, Day 1: Inglourious Basterds: Aromas of ripe honeydew with gentle honey, and intense white florals with a nice bitterness from the stems (almost comes off like herbal notes, in a good way).

Flavors of the recognizable "noble rot", dark but runny honey, gently spiced wax, awesome bitterness and specks of dark and black minerals.

Surprising this is still somehow not too heavy for a d'Yquem so young.. probably their hallmark of being approachable without fatiguing the palate. Good now but do your best to stay away and revisit in 10-15+ years, shocking to hear that from myself..

Fabulous All Sauternes Tasting Dinner (Brad's Place, St. Paul, MN): Dark gold color. PNP. Drank 1 glass over 2.5hrs. The nose is a little tight initially, showing citrus and some spices, ultimately it gives way and displays tangerine, pear, figs, peach, quince and some honey. The palate is less dense, sleek and refined, not as sweet, medium bodied, youthful, tangerine, honeysuckle, fig, peach, citrus, spices with a long finish. Very solid. 93+ to 94pts.

Twas brillig and the slivey toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe; all mimsey were the bovergills and the momeraths outgrabe.

Clutching my vorpal corkscrew I approached the sleeping beast. One two and through and through! I detached the cork and poured a schlumock.

What a lark this '75 is, as in uffish thought I stood!

Decanted and left to slam for about 3 hours, I drank this from an ISO shape.

The colour is burnished copper. Surely, we are speaking old wine but not over the hill wine (no brown or khaki notes).

The nose is a riot of Saturnalian proportions, all apricots, peach, a touch of lemon twist, creme brulee. More complex wine of this style can easily be found, especially if made from Riesling, but this is like listening to a perfectly tuned motor. There might be faster from 0-100, or better into corners but it is the ride with this beast.

The palate is as per the nose but there is a marmalade aspect that adds to my pleasure and the intensity and length are a thing to behold. You will keep coming back to this. Truly wonderful wine.

Yquem’s 1985 really shows off the fresh, intense orange rind side of Yquem. Cream, pineapple, and white peach develop with time in the decanter and while I love the style, I find this wanting a bit in the way of complexity and depth. Still showing quite young (even after a 6 hour decant), I would be inclined to hold these another 20 years to allow the interesting tertiary notes of mature Yquem to develop.

Every time I have this, it reaffirms my ardor for Yquem (the only dessert wine I even bother with at this stage). Paired awesomely with homemade creme brûlée. (Nice job bsumoba!)

Reportedly well stored bottle. Vast disappointment. Colour is deep, tea-like. The wine has certainly an age, a bit of oxidation, cold tea notes, a bit of volatile and a very very strong medicinal character that renders it undrinkable. Cork was healthy, no TCA taint or other problem.

Yquem vertical winemaker's dinner with Jean Philippe Lemoine (Restaurant Frank - CPH): Tasted Yquem 2015, 2010, 2005,1990. I must admit my all time favourite is 2001 (my score 98 - among the best wines I have ever tasted), which was not represented. Compared to that vintage we were not close with any of the evening's vintages.
I have tasted 1990 some times and in general I find it too oxidative. I am fully aware that many like that style. For me 2001 has the freshness, which I love so much combined with complexity after all developed over 20 years. This btl was even more oxidized than usual (if it wasn't because it came directly from the cellars of Chateau D'Yquem i would have guessed "poor storage"). The colour was deep amber. Overwhelmed by so many tertiary aromas of caramel, walnut and cinnamon. I have no 1990's in my cellar. If a had I would drink it as soon as possible.

Absolute perfection, fully mature but no risk of declining any time soon! Deep yellow-gold. Last tasted 2016, even better now. Very aromatic, deep and rich lemon-peach aromas mixed with a light oak touch. Lots of flavor, rich and viscous, acidity still prominent but plenty of sweet fruit, and very lingering sweet aftertaste.
