Over two days. Fascinating to have tasted this a few days after the notably backward 2010 vintage.

This vintage, IMO, open-knit from the outset, has remained so. As pretty and alluring as all three previous tasting experiences. Nothing at all suggested reticence.

Seductive floral elements throughout. A red berry (raspberry, lingonberry, strawberry, and acerola) puree and potpourri bouquet and taste profile grace this wine quite uniquely. The textures, supple, velvety, and gritty interplay and change-inflection with striking precision. A wine of seeming contradictions, open yet firm, compact yet expansive, suave yet robust. In all cases, the wine reveals its more deeply substantive elements as it breathes.

The whole package on the second day. The floral and berry puree elements proved knee-weakening. Wholly spectacular! Moreover, while perceptible on the first day, a plush tannin wall asserted itself, adding evermore nuance and range. Indeed, the tannin here, combined with the wine's overall forwardness, marks this as the most unique Beaucastel that I have crossed paths with.

This packs the substance to continue its evolution for seven to ten years. As previously noted, this vintage will not likely lock down. This noted, my overall experience with this bottle demands a higher score, 96, instead of 95, and further improvement seems possible.

Enjoy over the near term after decanting for several hours, or hold. Recommend drinking by 2035. The acid profile might begin a rapid decline thereafter.

Dense, opulent, sensuous, richly textured and layers with ripe, sweet, fresh tropical fruits, lemon zest, white peach, flowers and minerality. The wine has a lot of heft, but with all the acidity, it is also light on its feet. This should age for decades if you can find any. Only 500 cases, give or take.

Tasted over three days, alongside the same vintage Coudoulet, which proved a fascinating experience. This wine offers a concentrated bouquet of herbs, spices, and exotic oils, along with deep floral perfume, and the essences of all lovely things crimson and purple. In a word: Gorgeous! The bouquet hints at striking profundity, in the form of layered rock and mineral substance. The expansive palate gives ample testament to the depth suggested by the bouquet. Red and purple fruited, noteworthy grit and grip, complex finish of exceptional length. Framed by high acid and medium tannin, deftly balanced. It deserves a long rest. As it sits, 96 points, 97 in time.

Next to the Coudoulet, this featured a reticence in line with, and indicative of, its latent substance, which allows the Coudoulet show better now. That substance is comprised of, among too many other elements to list, lightly sweetened dark chocolate, iodine, hot desert rocks, and powdery metallic ores. This puts the mind to wondering how beautifully this wine will show after 2027-2028.

Unlike the stately, seductive, and ethereal 2015, which offers red-fruited silk and velvet textures that glide across the palate, this puts the mind to the figurative equivalent of a mythical warrior goddess, who has bedded many lovers and vanquished even more.

Poured 90 minutes before tasting. Deep, clear violet with a hint of garnet, with pronounced, sticky legs. Nose is big, stinky, complex, and amazing: loads of barnyard, garrigue, plum, licorice, baking spice. Full bodied, secondary palate, noticeable brackishness at the start, cooked black fruit leading with tart red currant to follow. Hot, spicy finish with a few silty tannins.

NR because for whatever reason, as much of an old world oenopartisan as I am (I love Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rioja, Piemonte, Montalcino, Taurasi), Rhone reds weirdly just don't seem to do it for me (I've wracked my brain to footprint why and I haven't figured it out), but the craftsmanship in this bottle is still impossible to miss. Much respect for the effort.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is everything and nothing, with a few outliers. On the traditional side, Le Vieux Donjon maintains consistency of style, quality, and pleasure, even in off vintages. For ultra-modern hedonistic experiences, one need look no further than Clos Saint Jean's various offerings. Domaine du Pégaü wines fall somewhere between these two styles.

Then, there is Château de Beaucastel, and this vintage in particular. Vintage consistency with Beaucastel lies in its cleanness and its comparatively high Mourvèdre component. Otherwise, the last several vintages have presented marked variations in their youths. In recent (wine) memory, this vintage is most similar in bouquet and profile to the 2008, albeit prettier, fuller, and with more power. By comparison, the 2010 was dark and brooding, the 2011, 2012, and 2013 were taut, and showed a few angularities of youth. This vintage features a strikingly forward and inviting style.

Tasted over three days. Pulled the corked, inhaled the perfume, poured a half ounce, tasted it, decided that it did not need decanting, and left the bottle to breathe for a few hours. Bouquet of pure red sexy!!! All flavors and essences raspberry (fresh, dried, liqueurs, tea leaf, potpourri), strawberry, rhubarb, pomegranate, prickly pear, assorted red plums, and rooibos. The tartness of sweetened cranberry, lingonberry, and acerola backed all of this tangy red substance, along with green peppercorns, white pepper, and herbs. The wine also shows light, yet distinct, savory, sanguine, and mineral veins, (probably imparted by the combination of Mourvèdre and Cinsault). The wine tasted exactly as it smelled, with all elements coming forward in seductive layers. Mourvèdre-imparted gritty tannins offered a powerful expression of structure, in complete harmony with Grenache-imparted powdery tannins. Tang, with hints of sweetened tartness, showed prominently at the back and lingered through a long powdery finish. Fresh, vivacious, lifted, its open knit style entirely charming.

More of the same on the second day, the wine held its form. Perhaps surprisingly so, it had added nothing new. The third day revealed a slightly 'sweeter' wine, namely less tartness and more purple berry notes, blackberry in particular. It had also added a touch more weight, with the mineral veins more noticeable.

The one word I would us to describe this wine is: RIPE! In this way, it reminded me of the same vintage Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett. (Ultra pretty, but leaving questions of real substance, and thus, long-term aging potential.) Indeed, this three day experience left me with a few questions. Will this vintage enter the customary dumb phase? Who knows? Maybe, is my best guess. Will it add depth and interest with age? Probably, at least to a limited extent. (If it goes beyond that, hold-the-friggin'-phone!!!...as it will be amazing!) Would I bet on it achieving this level? No.

The experience also left me with a few thoughts. The wine imparts no sense of extraction, almost as if it was crafted from free run juice. Given its clean and open style, this fruit forward wine is almost fruity enough to make a blind taster wonder if it is a New World, Châteauneuf-du-Pape tribute. Several elements pull to the Old World though: overall balance, underlying savoriness, sublime minerality, and the absence of obtrusive alcohol. The most rustic element to this wine is the Mourvèdre's firmness and grip. Overall, almost impossible to not like, as it is just that pretty. This noted, the wine sort of left me hanging in that it lacked real interest factors, no hooks, if you will. 94-95.

Seconding @Pigdaddy's love letter.

Started out rather non-descript/bland during morning decant but grew according to expectations.

At Restaurant Tani we had a superbly balanced, youthful, elegant CdP with amazing potential for those better at keeping than we are.

No more btls, but as the price for this domaine has become insane, we will not join in with the choir of insanity. There are so many other wines that are as good as or better than this, that are available at a more agreable price point. At least if you blindedly examine what's in your glass more than you look at what's on the label.
...nevertheless, I really wish we had a case of this for the spread-out long-haul.

Superbly enjoyed with Restaurant Tani's magnificently fabulous baked cow-cheek (Tokyo).

This makes me very puzzled. Had the 2006 some years ago and thought it had almost burgundian charachter, while this is more like a good portwine dominated by raisins and with some heat in the ending. Two very different, but also very good, wines.
From a small bottle.
Seems open to me.

The wine was medium to dark purple in colour and had a reductive nose. It offered sweet, ripe red and dark fruit, blackberry, violets, herbs, spice, liquorice, vanilla and a hint of stony mineral notes on the palate, with lively acidity, fine tannin, and very good length of the dry finish that stood in a pleasant contrast to the fruit sweetness.

The medium- to full-bodied, ripe, smooth and balanced wine had a plush, enticingly smooth texture. The wine was a little simple, but had great concentration and the lovely texture stood out. This Coudoulet de Beaucastel outclassed quite a few of the Châteauneuf-du-Papes and Gigondas I had over the last couple of weeks. You can actually drink this now (and if you do it will be hard to keep your hands of your other bottles), but the wine should reward five or six years in the cellar and should continue to drink well past that. That said, I liked the wine better on day one than on day two as it became more loosely structured over night. Very good value. 92 for day one.

PnP. Beautiful brick colour, wide yellow/orange edged, 4.5. Dusty slightly oxidized bouquet. +4h: Grenache liqueur sweetness, garrigue, red fruits. Quite intense on the palate, lT, hA, mB, dry, surprisingly high acidity which gives freshness, long elegant finish. Drink now-onwards. This is my third bottle and they have all been different. This bottle was deliciously balanced and elegant but lacking the complex tertiary notes.

Day 1: Popped and poured. Consumed 1/3 bottle over two hours. Minimal aromas and flavors. A bit astringent. Not much to enjoy here now or in the near term. I’m not convinced there is long term upside. Replaced cork.
Day 30: Fell apart, whereas I’ve seen other wines blossom with this much time.

I increasingly enjoy CdPs at this age (with appropriate decant of course) and this 2016 from Beaucastel was excellent. Nice nose on pulling the cork, swirl decant let sit for 1 hr, drank over the next 1.5 hours. There was vibrant red fruit and CdP complexity of flavor - very very close to the ‘07 and ‘10 vintages magic. Fruit led the way, spice and Prov. market were secondary. The wine was really singing at the 2 hr mark, so I’d decant at least that long.

Chateauneuf du Pape lunch (Frank's place in Matraville): From Coravin. Quite gamey initially then rich, very rich, ripe, concentrated black and red fruit, baked herbs, a little cream...might be a tiny smidge of taint here as well. On the palate it has sweet dark fruits, blocky, grippy tannins...this is still fairly monolithic for me. Hmm.

A different animal from the wonderfully concentrated ‘15, this exhibits noir fruit, raspberry, pork shoulder, violets, red lava, stout beer and chocolate orchid. There’s an idealistic purity of fruit, with beauty and precision. Very silky tannnins and the finish is savory, with length. I love the aftertaste of mixed berries and herbs. Decanted for three hours and capable of a long study. The body is paradoxically transparent and suave, yet there’s density and a raciness. Drink 2022 -.

And here it was the case , 10yrs young, fresh ,bright, citrus, light waxy feel, good fruit core. Lovely depth and complexity , very mineral with the lightest touch of honey. Drink NOW! 94-95

CDP Corona Tasting...gotta love it!: This wine was double decanted to get rid of sediment, poured into small jars around 4 pm, transported to individuals for the tasting, poured into glasses and tasted at 6:30 pm, tasted over the course of 2 hours. The wines were tasted single blind (we knew what all the wines were, but not which one we were tasting). The wines in this tasting were as follows:

1. 1998 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau
2. 2000 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée
3. 2009 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin
4. 2007 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape
5. 2003 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The group's top 2 (which received almost all 1st or 2nd place votes) were the 2003 Clos des Papes (Number 1) and the 2000 Pegau (Number 2). My order was as follows: (1) 2000 Pegau, (2) 2003 Clos des Papes, (3) 2009 Janesse, (4) 2007 Beaucastel, and (5) 1998 Telegraphe. As a side note, my number 5 did not end up there because it was a bad, on the contrary, it was good, just happened to like the other wines better!

2007 Beaucastel - Very nice wine! I am sure my score is very conservative, but it scored relative to the other wines I drank with it (all scored fairly conservatively). The nose was a little disappointing, especially for a Beaucastel. There was fruit and grilled meat and herbs present, but the nose was somewhat subdued, especially compared to the top 2 wines. The palate was very good, and showed plenty of dark fruit, beef jerky, and some herbaceous flashes. The finish was medium to medium-long. A very enjoyable wine! This wine was number 4 for me (in an excellent line-up). 92+ points. I feel this wine will show better with some additional bottle age.
