I'd like to think the WOMBAT got an off bottle as this was quite juicy with rich cassis-cherry-berry fruits, balanced by integrated toasted vanilla-mocha with mild peppered spices. Typical smooth balanced WA blend profile from the get go, solid winemaking here, no clue why JS suggests waiting till 2025 as this seems ready now and may peak by then.

big disappointment following media hype (WS 92). While almost anything in WS needs to be taken with a grain of salt, given their propensity to over-hype plonk (and under-hype great values), this is only marginally better than Columbia Crest's 2012 Grand Estates and that's nothing to be proud of.

The 2012 H3 blend 94% Cabernet, 4% Merlot and 2% Syrah. Even if I had consumed this entire bottle by myself, I doubt that I could have found any cab notes. Ok, the wine is not revolting, but you can do a heck of a lot better with some of the 2012 blends (Gnarly Head). This H3 is a waste of time, calories and money.

SHOULD you be interested, I’ve uploaded info for this vintage which you can peruse at your leisure. 😉

Uncorked 30 min prior to tasting;

N: Slightly closed; With swirling, coffee emerges with undertones of casis, poss blkberries, & hints of pyrazines

P: Almost swtish frt (approaching threshold R.S.?) & vanilla atop blkberries, the few remaining VERY innocuous tannins evolving into a lingering, pleasant finish. The relatives enjoyed it with their Grilled Ribeye Steaks. [Unfortunately I only smelled it.] 15% ABV

Note: Unlike the bottle of 9/29/19, considerable sediment was on the shoulder of this bottle. IF I'd noticed it, I would have decanted. 🙄 [This bottle had been stored cork down until ≈36 hrs prior to opening.]

Dry, dark, ruby red cabernet that exceeds its price point. Well-rounded with excellent complexity and nicely balance fruit. Highly recommend at $10.

Simple, sweet red fruit driven with very little complexity. Very little varietal character. A wine to guzzle. One could do much worse for $11.

Aerated and then decanted for 2 hours before the first sip. The fumes are incredible at the time you open the bottle. There is just so much intense and enjoyable fruit initially when sticking the nose in the decanter.

I will say this wine developed immensely over 3 hours of consumption. The wife is pregnant with #3 and this allows me more time to check how a bottle of wine evolves once opened. With the first glass I would have scored it a 90 at best, but now on my last glass I am tempted to give it a 93. That is how amazing these last sips are. The wife gets the obligatory first minor sip of the first glass and then another one 2-3 hours later on my last glass and she confirmed that it just opened up incredibly. The palate is all about red fruit and plum, with a very nice vanilla note through a perfectly rounded oak treatment. Medium body, long finish and good complexity. This is what makes the wine hobby so much fun. If somebody just opens this wine and drinks it within an hour, you won’t get to experience what this is all about.

I would say ready to drink, give it a good decant. Off the charts QPR at under $20. Unfortunately I only had one bottle, but very obviously I like the style and thus have to seek out more WA wine resembling right bank Bordeaux.

Definitely not my style, but very popular. I prefer to taste chardonnay rather than oak and butter. The French have a way with chardonnay that, when it works, produces a heavenly wine. I tasted one like that. Since I can't afford such wines, I stick to Macon, or white wines other than chardonnay, like white Bordeaux.

I thought some were being very harsh on a qpr, Merlot from a warm vintage that was most likely fermented and aged in steel with toasted spirals of oak trying to give it some finesse, but really this is one of the worst examples of wA merlot or Merlot in general that is one the market. This isn't a great QPR. This is a very warm vintage, but the flavors from oak are barrel or even barrique flavors but stuff from chips and circular toasted pieces which are really nothing but modern ways to attempt to give a wine, aged appearance. Really not good. Cocoa and chocolate make their appearances, but don't come with consistency or the acids that make a decent merlot. I was harsh reading some of the revues saying look towards Chile, but really good wA and CA Merlot exist but you will pay money to see and rink them and cellar time will be mandatory. Yes Italian greats are there, and the best qpr is from Unbria, in falsetto Merlot or whatever they have it branded for, in Wegman's its La Famiglie. Really unless you want to pay $30 for the better Right Bank bargains in Fronsac and I am speaking of La Vielle Cure or Chateau Fontenil, then you better give up on Melrot as a varietal as this is a piss poor example of what Merlot can offer and more of a warning of what to watch out for. Really, choose the Grand Estates Cabernet or go to the Two Vines Merlot-Cab Franc as a way better bet, than this crap. Faked, as in threaded oak shaving that have been toasted, all being legal in cA, but this isn't representative of real WA Columbia Valley or other Merlot. Shame on CC for letting this crap out on the market and shame even more on WS and others for buying in to this travesty.

Merlot (64%), Cabernet (34%) Blend. California, Washington, Columbia Valley. Bark to the nose. Light-Medium body, light toasted oak. Silky, short finish with a touch of acidity. There's a slight hint of tannin to let us know it's red side. I think it's a pleasant, accessible wine for all.

This is a totally serviceable red blend from Washington State, especially considering it's very appealing $7.99 price tag. This is not a big powerful, blow you away wine. It has serious dark color and a fruity nose. The weight on the palate is only OK. Solid if not overwhelming combination of mostly red fruit that harmonize together. Clean red fruit finish with a touch of oak.

This wine tastes juicy & delicious. However, the RS is a bit high.

It is bursting with sweet plum, back cherry & blackcurrant notes. Secondary notes of vanilla , chocolate & tobacco take over on the mid-palate, leading to a medium-long, dusty finish.

It may be too sweet for me, but it is still darn good & highly quaff-able.

Bought 3 bottles of this way back in the Summer of 2008, drank the first two within a year and sat on this one (passive cellar in the basement) until this evening. Pop and pour, consumed over 3 hours. Nose: Medium expressiveness, chocolate, toffee, lavender, and dark fruit - black raspberry and blueberry. My notes from 2008-9 indicated a strong oak presence which has definitely integrated quite well 8 years on. Palate: Medium-full bodied, surprisingly youthful showing a spicy dark fruit attack with enough acid to maintain balance, good persistence through the mid-palate, with leather and tobacco notes in the back-end. Finish: Medium length dominated by spicy dark fruit, tobacco, and earthiness. The years have been amazingly kind to this mid-level Washington cabernet, hard to imagine this getting any better though.

There must be some bottle variation going on here - I don't taste any of the problems some other reviewers have identified. We paired this with grilled marinated flat iron steaks on a Monday night and it worked beautifully. Smooth and polished cherry, spice and chocolate, drinking very nicely.

First one of these in 18 months. Brought with us to the Black Diamond clubhouse to share over dinner with Joe O’Toole. Now halfway through a case purchased back in 2012. A rather youthful-looking, opaque crimson in color, lightening noticeably at the edge. Sweet scents of berries, spice and cherry candy on the nose. Full-bodied and velvety in texture, this retains a definite sense of elegance and class. Still offering a generous amount of ripe, delicious blueberry, plum and dark currant fruit, with a mild-to-moderate acidity. Shows just a touch of oak now and silky tannins that are beautifully integrated. The long, polished finish is drenched with sweet fruit and alluring notes of vanilla, earth and mint. Complex, harmonious and delicious, this Columbia Valley beauty still seems to have plenty of life left ahead of it.

not enough formal notes to score this but I wish I had another case. Nice eucalyptus with plum and oak on the nose. Well structured throughout with a pleasant, barrel driven soft tannic finish. A very nice wine that couldn't be drinking much smoother than it is now. Shame it was my last bottle as the quality is well beyond $8 price point right now

After being impressed with prior vintages of the Columbia Crest Grand Estates Merlot ('03/'04) and also the '07 Columbia Crest H3 Cabernet I've been on the hunt for the H3 Merlot.

I found the '05 yesterday, which seemed like an old/back vintage of this wine so I was a little skeptical.

However, I think the bottle age of this wine is actually helpful and for my palate this wine is drinking really well right now. What I like about Columbia Crest wines (and this will play into whether you'll likely agree with my observations here and for what occasions this wine will be well-suited) is that they're so aromatic and flavorful from the moment you pop them open. No-fuss weeknight pizza/burger wine. Also great as a cocktail.

The flavor profile is very focused. Dark berries amply backed by bacon both on the nose and palate. The tannins are sweet- indeed the wine is probably too sugary for some. But it goes down dangerously easily.

I'm a big fan and consider Columbia Crest to be the premier value brand in the US market. For my palate, nobody delivers across all price points better than CC- and the good news it's available everywhere.

Had at my brother-in law's 80th party among a variety of lower priced wines most between $ 17.00 & $ 25.00. I am recording my tasting notes from these. First are my tasting notes then is the listing of the wines opened. We also popped a 1936 Vega Siciliano !

Tasting Note: A much better wine the H3 from this producer. It had dept of flavors and I would argue an improvable wine with some time. A really good showing amongst a litny of wines tried tonight. Flavors were mild, but better balance than most well priced drinkable wines we tried.

A surprise. A lot of alcohol (14.8%) which does not really become evident until late

Powerful, confirming my prejudice that Wa Merlot is softened by Cab S, even after minimal airing it shows great tannin-fruit balance. One of my good value purchases in the last six months

Nose: Tons of fruit (like blackberries, strawberries, raspberries, currants and plums) on the red and purple of the color spectrum, almost sweet damp earth in a forest floor with all the grass and moss, gentle spiced oak and sour tobacco, some smoke meat and leather, silvery minerals with a bit of graphite (but coated in gobs of fruit) and a touch of sea breeze.

Palate: Fruits are brighter and more red on the palate and resembles more like bright cherries and cranberries, a heavy dose of oak treatment with firm spice, overly steeped bold tea, crushed dry stones and savory minerals, sour tobacco and a kick of heat.

Attributes: Clear medium ruby. Dry with light amounts of slippery, slightly grippy tannin. Medium-minus to medium body with medium-plus acidity. Decent finish of about 8-10 seconds.

Thoughts: This feels kinda crammed like an all-nighter, last minute college essay.. nothing seems to be working with each other. Also kinda artificial on both the nose and palate. It doesn't seem to have a direction and almost lost.. like a hot-headed child who doesn't listen nor knows what to do. There's a lot going on and maybe it just needs plenty of bottle time to settle down (or grow up if you will). Or maybe food can take away all the negatives here.. I wouldn't know..

Other notes: No decant, time in glass only. Bordeaux glass. Served initially ~64° then ~66° and consumed over 1.5 hour.
