This bottle is in a fantastic place and demonstrates handily why in general I prefer California pinots to Oregon. I just love the focussed cherry-plum fruit of the RR and all that spice, especially as translated by a winery so good at pulling every drop of elegance possible out of each vintage. Even more substantive than a bottle last November without losing it's mid-weight cool, this pinot is ready without decanting but will probably become more interesting in the next 3-5 years as secondary nuances settle in.

PnP, chilled - but needed some air time to open. Suggest 15 min slo-ox or quick decant. Aromas of citrus, orchard fruits, and a touch of white flowers. The medium to plus bodied palate showed apple, pear, a streak of citrus, and something softer (like melon). The acidity is juicy and balancing, and any trace of oak is very, very slight. This wine should hold for another couple of years.

Heard much about this wine. Bought it in sunny Mexico.
Finished a bottle of Mayacamas, popped the cork on this.... It had a tough time comparing, though both were pure of fruit. Little wood. Classic Chardonnay character.
Mayacamas was 3 years older.

On its own this morning, this wine was better.
Pale lemon colour
Pronounced Citrus, grapefruit green apple
Banana, lychee, hint of pineapple
Honey
Little of any vanilla or oak etc.

Dry
High acid
High alcohol
Medium body
Long finish 60+

Likely a very good wine if tasted totally on it's own. However, last night, it was against Mayacamas, and these two bottles were very similar in character, and thus the comparables were against this Flowers sample.
It was just slightly underwhelming. A little hohum.

That said, maybe it needs a little time in the bottle... As I've experienced many wines with this identity, which after 3-5, even 10 years, becomes the amazing liquids we all aspire to drink.
If I can find this in Calgary, I'll buy this again... If only to put it to that longevity test.

But, if I had one bottle to buy this afternoon... Mayacamas, in a romp! And a bigger hole in my pocket!

Addendum
After a night in the fridge, with the cork in, and with a little air, this improved in that it opened a bit, to become more fragrant and forward. Much better 2nd day.

Chardonnay 100%
13.5 % abv

PS - Drink the Rainbow.

This is exactly the type of Chardonnay that I love to drink: everything is in balance with nothing sticking out, adding up to a delicious whole. If this wine were a shape, it would be a smooth sphere. It’s vibrant and fresh without being reduced to within an inch of its life (like so many high end Chardonnays on both sides of the Atlantic). Enjoyable fruit without tasting like a Starburst. Oak and some malo without tasting like a vanilla knob of butter. Acidity that is refreshing while keeping my tooth enamel intact.

A common descriptor of a wine like this is “Burgundian”, which has become a shorthand for a New World wine that is not overblown. But rather than “Burgundian”, I’d rather describe this wine as “best of the New World”. At first opening, it could, in fact, be easily be confused with white Burgundy. But as it develops, at least to me, it seems more and more New World in its aromatic/flavor profile with its warmer climate flavors of stone fruits and a bit more richness. Unfortunately, “New World” has become synonymous with super ripe fruit and high levels of extract, which really speak more to wine making style than terroir per se (debatable whether the winemaker counts as terroir, but that’s a conversation for another time). A perfect example of this “best of New World” style is Napa Cab from the 70s and 80s: not overblown at all, but still a separate beast than Bordeaux.

But returning to this wine; it is made such that the high quality, cool climate, California fruit, is allowed to fully express itself without heavy handed vinification getting in the way. The appearance is a light straw, very youthful appearing. The nose is full of lemons, lime zest, and chalk dust, as well as a bit of ripe warmer flavors of juicy yellow peaches and passionfruit. There is a wonderful acidity that causes your mouth to water…but not your eyes! The same fruits are at the fore, a chalkiness reminiscent of Chablis, medium complexity. Finish isn’t super long, but sticks around 30s or so. Half the bottle consumed on day one, second half decanted into a 375mL bottle and consumed on day 3. The day 3 wine was a bit richer, a bit “warmer”, but mostly similar. I love this stuff!

Violets and red berries on the nose. Cranberry, raspberry, and spice. Light yet concentrated. It's a shame that this is my last bottle.

Breaking in a friends new place!: This Chardonnay was hitting all the right notes for my palate...very Rombauer like. Nice balance of fruit and acidity, with tertiary notes and nicely integrated sweet oak. Showed stone fruit, honey and lemon on the nose with dried straw and hints of buttered toast. The palate showed plenty of pear, ripe apple, hay, Meyers Lemon, and a long finish of butterscotch, chalk and poached pear. This is right up my alley! 93 for me and a very good QPR!

Fantastic again - great acidity to balance the ripe fruit. So much power and flavor while maintaining finesse. Strawberry cranberry raspberry orange peel. Lovely.

Flowers Chard is a little overpriced for me but it is of decent quality. Certainly less buttery in flavor than most of the other chard's I had. This has clear indications of less wood than others tasted. Crisper wine than the other Chard's I had. A good one if you like this style.

This selection was more like a French Chardonnay than the typical California offering. Subtle fruit nose with more minerality and structure than expected for mid palate and finish.

The nose on this one was a bit off for me. I was reminded of gym socks. The palate was much better, with some dirt and pepper along with some dried cherries.

This wine was hard to pin down. Not a great nose, but an excellent palate.

Deep yellow. A developing and notably intricate and quite refined nose offers aromas of bruised green apple, fresh pear, lemon, trampled white flowers, crushed rocks and a hint of toast. Somehow both broad and compact on the palate, medium+ bodied with medium+ acidity and tight, almost nervy flavors for a California Chardonnay. This is thought provoking and really quite good.

Assertive vanilla honey aroma. Soft buttery honey vanilla across the palate. To my taste a semisweet dessert wine, cloying and boring.
Ordered by my dinner companion who gulped glass after glass with pleasure.

Popped and poured with no decant. We expected that this might be over the hill. We found that it was soft, very well balanced, and with a long finish. It might be missing the initial punch it had when younger, but a very nice bottle.

1/2 hour decant and the second SC Pinot of the night. Dusty spice, subdued cherry notes with a little bite on the finish as Cousin Pudge noticed right away. Maybe some more time in the bottle but the Sojourn SC was the winner this night.

So I bought some of this because of an aggressive sale price and while I would never argue that it is not a well made wine...it is definitely not what I am looking for stylistically. Especially in rose'. This is a richer, more extracted style. I look for freshness, strawberry, watermelon, grapefruit and a little bit of herbaceous element(s) in rose'. This is heavier-handed, with too much alcohol (bottle's label states 13% abv...tastes much hotter, especially on the finish) and oak for my taste. There are a lot of Old World options at better price points imho.
