A very delicate creature, none of the peachiness of Middle Mosel. Something is not quite right with the balance though.

This seemed rather closed in/ungiving for several hours. It eventually opened up, and some of that mid-palate complexity that comes with aged Kabinett started to creep in, but it was just around the edges. I suspect this really needs another couple of years to emerge from sleep. Lots of air can help, but cellar time is always better IMO.

Very cloying on palate. Explosive flavours of pineapple, mango and stone fruits. Lacks acidity to balance the candied fruit flavours. Aeration does not help the flavours to further develop or harmonise. Best served with plenty of ice cubes.

Not as sweet/lively as the Gold Cap, but more steely, balanced, smooth as silk, fruits and acids, just a good Kab for hot summer. I could drink it all day long. The finish is so clean, just amazing. I still like the Haag better, it hits you more energy, Zilliken seems more elegant.

AP 08 16. Damn near the most perfect Spatlese I've ever tasted. Stunning, endless depth, vibrant. Impossible to describe. Just perfection in every way.

This came in the first wave of 2015 Germans, and popped alongside a brilliant Willi Schaefer (AP 05 16) and Donnhoff Liestenberg Kabinett, all three of which were brilliant, this was the standout winner. Not overwhelmingly rich like the Schaefer and significantly more acidic lift than the Donnhoff. If I were a wealthy man I would drink this with every meal and never tire of it.

Rieslingfeier - Seminar with David Schildknecht, Andreas Adam, Thomas Haag, Florian Lauer and Dorothee Zilliken (Bar Boulud, New York, NY.): 12% alcohol. 7.9 g/l RS, 6.9 g/l acid. Medium/light yellow. Subtle nose - reticent. Minerals and steel - dusty. On the palate: lime and lots of acid - lemon. Lots of minerals as well. Not showing the breadth of flavors like the Schloss Lieser (the previous wine in the flight). Very focused and elegant however. Showing lots of stone fruit pit bitterness in the finish. Nose - 4/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14/20.

First from a case. The nose has that perfect combination of alluring tropical fruit and hints of smoke and kerosene, that beckons in the drinker with each sip. The palate starts with tangy tropical fruit, like passionfruit, then moves through a creamy stage and finishes with sharp citrus acidity. Intense but elegant - in fact it's almost too acidic even though there is plenty of luscious body to the wine too.

Pretty likable - nose has that white fruit cocktail over slate feel that I often get in German Riesling. Light-bodied and sweet on the palate, but there is adequate acidity as well. Per the label, 8% alcohol, and this goes down very easy.

Glass: Riedel Vinum Riesling & Schott Zwiesel Burgundy
Drunk over two days.
Clear, youthful pale lemon-golden color. Clean, medium intense, youthful-developing nose. Very lean, precise, fresh and elegant with aromas of lemon fruits, associations of “dark” slate came into my mind, gooseberry, nettles, and herbs. Very nice.
This wine is “dryish“, somewhere between off-dry and dry. Unexpectedly medium+, well integrated acidity, medium- alcohol (11,5% abv). This wine needs your full attention! Simply swallowed it is just a mediocre-good Riesling. It is not loud or driven by its fruit, but its minerality and phenolic components. Given it time on the palate, swirling it, than it reveals its real beauty. Very precise, lean, perfectly structured, shy, but with enormous tension and pressure on the palate. Juicy grapefruit, herbs, wet stones. Complex and quite long and lingering finish. Certainly just a teen and I am really looking forward to taste it again in a few years. Has a long life ahead.

Medium deep yellow/gold, nose is a luscious honeyed waft, with a touch of florality - sweet, somewhat viscous entry, but backed up with impressive acidity. Creamy citrus pastry flavours, long zingy citrus-infused finish. Loads of depth and breadth, a really lovely wine. I'm sure this will stay on plateau for years to come.

PNP. Color straw. Nose shows TdN and light white peach. Swishing this shows it’s ripeness and it has significant RS. Still there is acid there which keeps this much lighter than I would expect. Would not have guessed this as an 03 if tasted blind. Silly for zilli. Thanks David!

Opened two hours before my Riesling tasting. Was in the third flight and showed incredibly well despite my crumbled cork. WOTY so far as this had everything I want in an Auslese, very good acid, not cloying at all but still pure fruit that was almost electric. Easily see it going for a couple more decades. Outstanding!

Rieslingfeier Riesling Crawl (New York City, NY): A lot of floral and honey notes, but this time there's a lot more fruit that comes out to play -- juicy pineapple is the big player here. Lovely refreshing acidity. Very, very good.

Fantastic Auslese. This is in such a great place right now; the fruit's still quite youthful and fresh, but augmented by layers of more savoury smoky, herbal, mineral and faintly burnished flavour elements that all come together very seamlessly. There's moderate sweetness on the palate and powerful acids giving it lift and great focus, and it finishes very long. (AP #6.)

Similar to previous bottle 3 months ago, this wine seems to be lacking acidity. Fairly light and short finish too. Hmmmm....one of the weaker producer of '15 vintage, surprisingly given the reputation of the producer! Again this shows better on the 2nd day, a lot more vibrant but still does not have the length and structure of some other '15 Kabinetts.

This is only getting better! Extremely mineral nose - cold iron, wet slate, sea salt - and an impressive integration of the 85 grammes residual sugar, perfectly balanced to the soaring acidity and sheer concentration of flavours. But at 13% potential alcohol it's hardly an old-school Kabinett, is it?

#09-98, 7.5% abv. Pale straw in colour. Very tropical nose, with some floral aromas as well as kiwifruit, pineapple, and white peach. No signs of petrol on the nose. This has a slight bit of funk (a la Wehlener Sonnenuhr) on the palate, but is showing remarkable fruit and acidity, counterbalanced by some chalky mineral quality as well. Much more fruit-forward than the 1990 I had a few days ago (and the acidity is a lot less loud). I imagine this still has quite some ways to go on its way to developing even more pronounced secondary characteristics. If I had to guess this is sitting at the very beginning of its mature phase, but if the 1990 is any indication, that phase is going to be very, very long. No signs of decline at all on the second day, though the tart fruit seems slightly more prominent than the day before, with juicy pineapple being the dominant tone. If this weren't so damn good, I'd be able to save some for investigation tomorrow, but alas, I drained the rest of the bottle in no time.

Holy crap. This is one of the best young Auslese that I've had in some time. Still very youthful; a pale greenish yellow colour in the glass, and the aromatics are an immediate wow. There's an array of ripe fruit here, ranging from fresh limes and other tart citrus notes to more exotic passionfruit and guava flavours, and it's surrounded by layers of fresh florality and herbal/faintly minty notes, vivid slatey minerality, and bright honeyed accents. There's a faint sheen of incredibly clean botrytis here that allows the fruit and minerality to stand out, and amazing acidity on the palate that keeps this really light and focused, with a finish that goes on for minutes after each sip. Spectacular wine. I am very, very glad I have several more of these. (From 750 ml, ex-Bonelli cellar.)

The German Crush Tour; 10/8/2017-10/16/2017: mineral driven, powerful Riesling with a hint of sweat, rich notes of pear and pineapple. really deep and already complex wine that will only get better. this is where feinherbs really shine IMO - the touch of sugar prividing a roundness and cream to the powerful and mineral driven core of the wine. a gem!

First bottle of the 2013 vintage for me. I will not score this as I didn't take any notes and focused more on drinking it in big gulps together with our favourite Thai take-away. Anyway, as other vintages this has a great balance between acidity and sweetness. Really fresh, really complex and really enjoyable. Zilliken never seems to fail!

Bordeaux night (West Hartford, CT): This is amazing, and clearly I don't own enough '05 Zilliken. A wow from the aromatics alone with an incredible scent of lemon custard, honey, fresh citrus fruits, and riper peachy and floral elements. This is intensely sweet, but at the same time remarkably light on its feet with really bright acidity balancing the sugar and giving it a remarkable sense of freshness on the palate. Absurdly long finish. So young right now, but so good.
