Red Bordeaux 2003, with Richard Brazier (Handford Wines, London): Quite a lot of fruit on the nose but that’s about it. Difficult wine to say the least, and the palate is impossibly tannic and bitter. Good luck with this. 85

It’s been 7 years since we tried this last ( Papies 94) and happy to report that it’s still going strong and is very healthy.
This wine once again confirms our belief that Talbot and Gruaud Larose of 82,83,85,86 are some of the best gems at this stage ( have been for the last 10yrs that we have been following) for lovers of classic , soft, well aged Bordeaux and with great prices.
This beautiful 83 put a smile on our face, granted it’s the style of wine we seek and cherish, soft and silky, tertiary, leathery and earthy. Healthy fruit for sure albeit the best days of the fruit are behind us. Still with energy, subtle and savoury wine and just so joyful. 93-94 and a must buy more.

Beyond a Birthday dinner! (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Another masterful performance by this amazing wine. And for lovers of well aged classic bordeaux like us this is probably as good as it gets.
Decanted for 2 hours and definitely helped develop the wine. The colour shows its age but u forget that the minute you smell it. The nose is as classic as it gets, herby, leather, earthy/mushroom notes and cigar box. On the palate it is well aged with good balance of fruit and secondary notes. Full of life and with silky tannin. We could go on for a long time here. Simply wonderful. 96-98

Delightful wine albeit lacks a serious side one with complexity and depth. Still though very enjoyable in its straight forwardness. Floral, light mineral and petrolly nose. Light on the palate , we think its an 03 characteristic, and short on the finish but this was just perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon bbq. 91 on the scale but on the time and the occasion it felt way more.

From magnum and requires some decanting. Always a joy to come across well aged xinomavro ( We were told by Filippo Pulisci of Antinori that this is known as negroamaro in Italy and in both cases it translates as black & bitter, Jancis Robinson however told us that there is no Genetic Link) because with age it takes this delicate character almost a Pinot noir. The nose is quite open from start, with a bordeauxesque feel, leather, tobacco notes light earth. Still a decent amount fruit here, well round, silky tannin and with good depth. Lovely purity and character and full of typicity. For sure it has had a close encounter with oak in its elevage but that is long gone. Very nice! 92 and with quite a bit of life ahead.

To be honest we expected a lot more from this wine and could well be a function of youth and hence it has not developed yet. Light sweet notes, coffee, chocolate, ripe , decent acidity but a bit uninspiring at this stage. Good wine but no music here . 89

After a bad bottle from the batch that broke our heart this came to reward us for not loosing faith.
Requires decanting for sure and a good hour here helped. Post that it was a recital of greatness that old school classic Napa of the 90s ( a bit of a soft spot there) only delivers. It’s as we always say like a 1er Cru from Bordeaux at the top of the range plus an extra dollop of ripeness and that ever present juiciness that Napa has. We can go for ever here but this was a masterclass and an easy 97 maybe more and frankly could well have been a perfect wine if we have never had tasted perfect wines before. 97 ++

The Papies Join the 3000 Tasting Notes Club (The Leadbury, London): Double decanted for like 2 hours. Needs about 30 minutes to be honest. Also mind the sediment here.
The Colour shows its age with decent bricking. On the nose it is an ode to classical aged Bordeaux. Leather, cedar, cigar box, light spice and light earth. Open, long and delicate nose, pure and elegant. On the palate it carries on but the only negative here is that the fruit is showing a dry edge and felt a touch linear at times. Still full of life and the firm tannin this is great wine from an the unsung hero of 1983. Drink now

Opened and served and observed over 40 minutes. Some evolution along the way but the wine has a quite dark, ripe and rich core of fruit, quite the sweet centre and lots of spice. Felt less pure more overripe than a year ago and we felt less inspired by it than last year (Papies 91). Not sure what to make of it tbh. 89-90 from us

9/14/2013 - Papies wrote: 95 points

The Papies 20th Anniversary (Notting Hill Kitchen, Notting Hill, London): This vintage remains our favourite of the Pontet Canet stable and absolutely love the no nonsense purity of it. Well made and to the point with none of the new age changes they made additions that make the 08,09 & 10 feel so charmless (great wines but lack the special factor). Dark in colour, youthful glossy. On the nose it needs a bit of time to develop but once it does it is just magical with lots of dark fruit, spicy and light tobacco. On the palate it is vibrant, super well made, pure and so elegant. For lovers of un-adulterated Bordeaux this should hit the spot! So sell your 08s and buy 01s that is what we did! And the more we drink this the more we think we should be selling our 09s and 10s!

Know your Burgundy from your Beaujolais - with Anne McHale MW (Berry Bros & Rudd, London): Coppery rose in colour, looks like a much older champagne on first glance. Ripe and round, full of rich fruit, balanced and firm with no confectionary notes at all. Very pure in character, good yeasty notes and very much worth the 30£ or price tag. Does not have any bling factor but a very good champagne indeed. 91+

A return to the fuller, richer riper Dom. Second time we try this in the last few months and much like other 2004s we have tried ( Comtes de Champagne especially) this is a rich champagne with lots of depth and substance. The nose takes a bit of time to develop but it opens up nicely but at this stage it is the palate action that delivers the goods. Young still and with lots of life ahead of it but even at this age very very good. 93

Definitely we expected this to be better. Light sweet fruit, light nose, light oaky feel. Very young and dare we say hard. A touch of floral side at times gave a bit of joy but at this stage a touch too austere and not giving. Needs 10yrs and hopefully this will be the wine we paid for. NR for now.

Dark in color, light touch of mocha, dark fruits. Not very herbal to be honest. Tight but not harsh, very tannic and this wine needs time. Not very giving at this time. 90 at best for now and this needs a good 10 yrs in bottle.

Quite dark and dense from colour to palate. Dark fruited, plums, violet feel. Light herbal feel and of course sweet oak feel. Quite dense on the palate, full on ripe and with a faint raisiny feel. They lost a bit control of the ripeness in our view . A few sharp edges here and there. An ok wine. 87-88

Just an overall beautiful champagne and at pretty much at 4.5 years post disgorgement bang on the money. Very vibrant, good ripe fruit, rich but in balance, nice yeasty profile. It has an elegance that we do seek in champagne and this has been by far the best experience we have had with the VO. Very good! 94 easy and this disgorgement is to be had now.

The nose is open and opulent from start, violets, dark fruits, very floral and long. The palate carries on the same tune and although on the young side it was surprisingly delicate , especially for a 14.5% alc? good ripe core of fruit! balanced and with long finish. Open nose, very cabernet sauvignon driven,, secondary but still with good fruit, white pepper, forest floor in a way. On the palate it is still going strong, good weight, none of the 95 issues we so often come across (main reason none of us thought t was a 95) good mid palate fruit and length. Pretty solid effort and very good to drink now. 93

Never developed into what we thought it could achieve. A touch dissapointing vs the 95 Evangile ( Papies 95) . Decanting does help open and develop the nose. Cedar notes ( more cab sauv here right?), earthy notes, light peppery notes and a touch floral. On the plate it is not there and la is the depth the nose suggests. Maybe on the young side ? 91-92 now from us.

Decanted for 1.5 hrs but really only needs 30 minutes. Well secondary and classic. Bricking colour. The nose is full of earthy, tobacco and leather notes open and beautiful. The good news is that on the palate the fruit is quite alive and firm and adds a great second layer of complexity ( unlike the beautiful 89 Gruaud Larosse we tried side by side, Papies 93). A magnificent wine pure, elegant and at probably its peak now and should stay here for a few more years. 93

Having recently tried the 2006 (Papies 91) we were looking forward in this. Caramel, dark colour. Well evolved and was a lot more of a sweet, rich wine than a dry wine with light residual sugar that the 2006 was. Needs to be chilled ( especially on a hot Athens night) and we were expecting quite a bit more acidity to balance out the wine. Still pretty solid wine but lacked vibrancy. Would served it move as a desert at this age and for general note would serve this youngish (3-4yrs) or well aged as a desert.
