Not horrible but not amazing and not what I expected. The cave collection 2005 bottle we drank was ridiculous. Assessed by serial sampling of a pristinely cellared magnum that had been double-decanted (allowing two hours in decanter prior to funneling back into the cleansed magnum), it oozes with dark bramble fruits, baking spices, mocha, licorice, pipe tobacco and savory herbs. Full-bodied and with low-to-medium acidity, it wraps its flavors with silky-textured tannins and just the right amount of toasted oak. Layered on the middle palate and finishing long, this is nothing short of liquid hedonism. Those holding well-cellared magnums will be quite pleased with this wine at any point throughout the decade. Typical primary Napa black fruit but does what that Oakville high breed about it as well as some more developed leathery and smoky notes. Palate was much nicer than I expected as well, integrated, mostly resolved, and not offensively hot or intense. Still lots of oak and vanilla, but I apprreacited that this wine seemed a little more restrained. |
