2013 Tablas Creek Grenache

Unfortunately, this 2013 bottle was bad. It had a very bad syrupy taste, and not in a good was. The wine had significant bricking in it's color beyond what a 2013 should have. TCV vintage chart says this wine should still be drinking youthful. We had to dump this after a couple of sips - too bad.

Another fine TCV effort. I agree with the vintage chart by TCV, it is ready to drink, could go a little longer. Surprised because it is a 2010. Good flavor integration of the varietals, but at least for me, I get a wonderful grenache flavor in the finish. Surprised me a bit. Decanted 2 hours.

A hot mess! Fruit and berry juicy, quite heavily diluted with water, and obtrusive alcohol. Disappointing for the label and producer. Indeed, the worst, and the only non-interesting, Tablas Creek offering I have tasted, by a considerable margin.

Want to love JD but he is nuts with TC recent reviews, 2018 TC wine have restraint, complexity , earthiness, 15% fruit bombs are so yesterday, this wine was great from the get go, my wife immediately loved it, drank with loin lamb chops, spinach pie and grilled eggplant, the grape blend adds a wonderful dimension but your taste buds need to be in good shape and not burned out by high alcohol wines, will drink again

So disappointing. Frankly it drank like a bag of spanners. Disjointed and so acidic that the fruit was completely over shadowed. This bottle was bought on release from the winery and stored in ideal conditions, so not sure if it was flawed or.... Very poor QPR here.

Tasted at Wine & Spirits Top 100 NYC. This is an unusual blend of mostly Roussane with Picpoul, Grenache Blanc and one or two others. I enjoyed this. Certainly shows its Rhône roots, but the picpoul really freshens up the dominant Roussane. I found this to be quite different in a good way. Melon, stone fruits, tropical fruit. Lovely depth (multiple grapes will do that I presume…Lovely long finish. Needs air….I got the last pour from a bottle and that may have helped, as the person pouring suggested.

This note may actually apply to the “Esprit” Tablas Blanc bottling as pointed out by fellow CT’er wilypod. It has been copied there and will be verified with the winery.

Winery did verify it was the Esprit bottling. This will be deleted at some point soon.

Consumed over three nights.

Night One: Drank two glasses over ~3 hours. Not very impressed - overly sweet, super muted, slightly thin. net-net was not drinking as well as the regular Esprit rouge bottlings. Disappointed after building up my expectations.

Night Two: Too many margaritas, passed out before sampling this bottle.

Night Three: Wow, perfectly balanced now and has gained weight. Nose is more expressive, as is the palate, with tons of depth in the fruit and a much longer finish. Minerals apparent as well.

I recommend waiting another 5-7 years before opening this.

This was enjoyable, but I wish my experience measured up to the other reviews to date. This never really evolved beyond good to very good, with dark fruits dominating and no real layering or complexity, especially in the nose. Had over a couple of nights (a glass left the last night).

I wanted so much to believe this wine is fine, that was not past its prime but ultimately, yes, it is.
Nose had black berry, almost licorice notes with a bit of leesy-sour cheese notes.
Big, black berry and spicy fruit in the mid-pallet that is tasty but then the finish is only medium in length and has light dark berry fruit but a dry texture and a slight minty flavor in the alcoholic and dry finish.

After 3 hours, the dark mourvèdre berry fruit turned to kirsch.

So it seems disjointed in a way that will not ultimately come together with age, in my opinion. The dry finish and relatively short fruit in the mid pallet will not improve. But still, a good drink with hearty food and some aeration will get you the most from this.

Very Good++. This comes out on PnP a bit sweet on the nose with an easy, inviting feel, ripe red fruits, a bit polished. It really starts to settle in with some air and the Counoise at only 12% partners with the leading Grenache (52%) in the forefront. Vibrant ripe red fruits and a sappy core with hints of spice and eucalyptus. This is very nice, fun to drink, and works both with and without food. It could serve as a great wine for grilled fare.

14.5% abv. No heat detected at all. Very well balanced and integrated.

There's no need to wait on these, but I'd like to let my remaining bottle go to about 2026 just to see how it works out.

Don't know what to expect exactly from Paso Robles Marsanne. I have 4 of these and was planning to age them a bit Figured I pop one to see where it is at and not age unnecessarily. Light, a bit thin, honeyed melon-cantelope flavors, don't see it holding up well with food as the body isn't there. A pleasant wine to start the evening. I'd drink 'em up in the next year or so.

2013 Tablas Creek Esprit Blanc de Tablas

Paso Robles White Rhone Blend more

4/1/2017 - wilypod Likes this wine: 93 points

Pale yellow with gold tints. When last tasted, it was closed, contained, and quite serious, in contrast to the extroverted, creamy, and generous 2012.

The 2013 has evolved but still has a seriousness and purity about it, like it is determined to make history. Saturated palate and lingering mineral length. Simple aromas at first, lemon curd and fennel. With ~ 30 minutes of air, sweet tangerine immediately followed by citrus pith and a contrasting lush leesiness. At an hour, warmer, quite perfumed. An abundant outpouring of fleshy ripe Bartlett pear, a soupçon of wildflower honey, sprinting lime and mango notes dashing about, yet in the mouth there is still a disciplined, overall concentrated character reining in the exuberance.

And so it goes, point-counterpoint, a dance of the flesh and the spirit. Esprit Blanc is supposed to have some complexity. This one defines it. Thoroughly enjoyed this 375ml and what a future lies ahead! Numbers do not do it justice. 5+13+17+8= 93

Great, well balanced white wine. What is interesting is that you can taste each of the individual varietals without tasting any of them! Does that make sense? So well blended you get each of the wines but none of them dominate.

PnP. Plum to garnet in color with some lightening at the rim. Medium bodied. Medium viscosity. Expressive nose has meat and game of the Mourvèdre with some kir and spice notes poking underneath. Medium dark fruits with great acid and resolved tannins in balance and medium long finish. Beautiful wine in its mature phase but not fading at all. Would drink this blind with older CDP and bet no one could pick out the American cousin

I can talk about wanting wines with finesse and elegance all I want, but at the end of the day, I want "more" from the Esprit. Similar to my 2016 notes, this has a very nice nose and is seamless and refined. But it has a very short finish and comes off as a bit hollow or thin. It's nice, but I can only hope this digs deep and pulls up some "more" over time.

A year later than my previous review and I have to say this has either passed its best, or I have gone off its flavor profile. A light mineral nose was the best feature, but the palete was dissapoiinting this time. Too sweet and almost syrupy in flavour that I did not appreciate. Perhaps with some good blue cheese it might have been better, but overall a dissapointment. I wonder if its time to drink these up. Window suggests time to go, but I am not so sure. As before I think for 10 dollars more you get the real deal - a CNDP. And I wonder if this is why Beaucastel has now taken their name off this wine, and from 2011 onwards I think it is labeled simly Esprit de Tablas. From a marketing point of view they made the right call in my opinion, as I no longer think it worthy of the Beaucastel name.

This vintage is supposed to be lusher and more accessible early but this still benefits from extended air. This was at its best the second night and on the first night with hours of decanting. Excellent wine, but you might want to avoid PnP - it actually came out a bit tight at first. (Only getting around to updating CT several days later and no notes.)

The jury is out on this one and it is too young to drink right now. It is always ill advised to open a bottle right after receiving a delivery, but I did it out of curiosity, pouring half a glass within a day of receipt. Very tight, but nice crunchy red fruits, elegant. The second night another half+ glass showed better, putting on some depth and a bit rounder. The third night was similar. The fourth night, with a half of the bottle remaining, it seemed really disjointed, pretty heavy, and I kept getting notes that spoke not of the harvest but of the wine*making*. Maybe it was just the primary fruit with oak, but it kept reminding me of cheaper wines where you taste the "ingredients". The good thing is that I'm probably wrong about this. I certainly hope so. Tablas farms biodynamic and has demonstrated thoughtful leadership; though I don't think I've ever come across anything in their literature / blog that discusses wine making ingredients or lack thereof, I have confidence that whatever "adjustments" they make are made with a great amount of restraint. I look forward to my next bottle in 6+ months where this fourth night note will not register.

Note: Each night the bottle was closed with a stopper, no suction, kept in a wine fridge.
