9/11/2017 - Ajvandet Does not like this wine: flawed

The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. It smells like mushroom and lead pencil. It tastes like forest floor and mildew. It might be a flawed bottle. I couldnt drink it. The CT gang are sàying that it sounds corked :)

Drinking much younger than than the 2010. Darker in the glass and very concentrated fruit flavors. Also more richness and depth the the 2010. And no funk at all on the nose. Drinking really well right now. Opened up pretty quickly with and hour or two of air. Longer finish although just a hint of bitter tannins at the end that detract from the overall experience.
This is qualitatively the better of the two and I scored a point higher, although I personally preferred the 2010!

My first check in with 2010 Cantemerle, and it’s a bit lackluster at this stage. Understated, almost to the point of being a bit mute, without the amplitude that I expect from 2010, and lacking a bit of the elegant charm that I associate with this estate. Cassis, lead pencil, some softly delineated purple fruit, a kiss of stylish oak, and moderately firm tannins, which are more approachable by day 2. Not bad but sub par compared to other recent big years (09, 15, 16, 19)

Coravin access. Healthy pour, tasted alongside the same vintage Sociando-Mallet.

Light bricking.

Classic! Bouquet of all pleasant things Haut-Médoc (shading ever so slightly to the steely precision of Saint-Estèphe). Blackcurrant, pepper garden, graphite, mint, lit tobacco, black earth, coal, and mineral ores. Some secondary notes, nothing tertiary. One could linger over the purity and seamlessness here for a long while.

As rustic as Left Bank wines come since the gradual shift to modernity during the 1990s, which accelerated after 2005. Juicy, expansive, and gripping. Without excessive weight or edges at any phase. The back and finish feature exceptional poise. Medium plus acid, medium powdery to gritty tannins.

This bottle had a decade+ plus of graceful evolution ahead of it. Likely to enter maturity round or about 2035 and hold for several years. No reason not to check in on bottles now. Wonderful QPR! 93-94.

This is the third bottle I have opened since release all stored at 55 degrees and not moved from my cellar. This is completely closed at the moment and I don't feel like any amount of coercion will open this up. This was more "open" even just a few months ago. I would not revisit this until another few years minimum. I agree with MOTZ comment from a while back - I would not touch these until the 15-20 year age window.

Score is for wine at this stage. Decanted and drank over three days - hoping it would evolve. Blackberry and earth, on the palate acidity and dry tannin at the front, blackberry, minerals. Acidity is prominent. It has somehow lost weight over the years. I suggested a few months ago to wait for the 10 year mark but thought I would try another bottle; my previous note is confirmed - definite wait for another two years at least, even then, not sure where this is going.

I love this Chateau. And this wine in this vintage is by far my most drunk wine of the left bank classed growths. Just good easy drinking, yet has enough complexity and depth to satisfy the craving for some gravity and seriously made wine.. So be it that it may be lacking a bit on concentration as Konstantin Baum pointed out recently, but... at the price it is a big winner. It is a classed growth, and it tastes like a class growth, unmistakably.

With the other classed growths - too often I find myself trembling before opening one, "I spent so much money, what if it is not good enough?? What a waste! Why spend so much!?" I get nervous and over-analytical, I can't really relax, and wine isn't supposed to feel like that. Well... I am not so worried about that with Cantemerle.

This 2016 is around 45 $.. It's no everyday wine, it's still priced above that, but I can let my guard down, I don't need to worry when I find the occasion - opened too early? Who cares... Have a bit in the sauce for your meal? Sure, why not! Have half a bottle left over in the fridge that you drink at the wrong temperature the day after? Well, it is not optimal but again, who cares? You can afford it and it is YOUR wine, and this wine is robust; It takes a beating and is enjoyable throughout. It works with you, you don't have to tiptoe around and micro-manage it, I let my shoulders down, relax and enjoy. This is not a high maintenance visitor, this is home on a sunday.

It is delicious and I am not ruined, it reaches quite high, has great manners, it's well made... at the price it is punching well above its weight, it is balanced well between structure and fruit, not too sweet. What I find I need to dig for in a lean chianti, Cantemerle showers you with - the quality comes out quite eagerly without going into a too sun-sweet plummy cabernet - it carries itself better than that. It hits the right spots and my red fine wine-thirst is quenched. If I were richer I'd probably find better, but for a normal worker, this hits me right at my level. As Peter Koff said comparing a higher quality wine to one he liked better regardless: "Another wine is my favourite, but this wine is my friend."

Suave, smooth with fine grained tannins. Drinks like a wine that has cellared 5-7 years... not sure how I feel about these early approachable wines... isn’t the fun to buy, cellar and discover later...? Anyhow, I digress. Buy this under $40– you will be glad to have a few. Does it hold to 2030.....? I lack firm conviction that it will.

Half bottle, tasted over two days, alongside several other quality Bordeaux. Was able to evaluate this bottle more thoroughly than in April, and it showed exceptionally well. Shy upon opening, with air the bouquet takes on Margaux-like qualities, delightful, 'sweet' sophistication. And, also with air, the wine features Saint-Julien like firmness and grip, the mouthfeel offering touches of luxury typical of higher classed growths.

The kicker here, as with many 2015 quality Bordeaux, is the acid level, which tends to be disproportionately high vis-a-vis the tannin. Moreover, the tannin in this wine, and in many other Bordeaux of this vintage, is ripe and ultra fine, loess-like if you will, the Giscours being a striking exception.

For example, I poured this double-blind on the second day for two trade professionals and neither called it Bordeaux. In fairness, one first thought it Bordeaux, but, knowing it to be young, noticed other elements, a suave refinement in particular (the absence of hard tannins), that steered him away from Bordeaux. I wonder if this atypical character has left some pros and Bordeaux aficionados scratching their heads, perhaps leading to lower scores than many wines merit.

'Keith Levenberg's' and 'chatters's' recent experiences with the 2015 Domaine de Chevalier, a standout of the vintage to be sure, in which they note similarities to Burgundy, offers an example of the unique quality of many wines.

Whatever the case, this wine has the acid to evolve for at least a decade, probably two (likely improving), and hold for a decade thereafter. If drinking in the near term, let it breathe for several hours.

Split.

Bouquet of blackcurrant, herbs, pyrazines, cut tobacco, and graphite, with blackberry and spice box (oak) top notes. Correct and appealing.

Expansive and balanced throughout. Medium plus acid frames the liquid precisely. Gripping tannins, once shrouded by oak, have begun to show through. Beginning to come into its own, as a deceptively powerful and wholly seductive Left Bank offering.

This split likely had a seven to ten years of evolution ahead of it. Full bottles should have twelve to fifteen. Even then, there will be no rush. Drink by 2042-2045.

Tasted over three days. Effusive blackcurrant and graphite notes, with thick petal flower accents upon pulling the cork. The attack features diamond-cutting-hard purple and black berry elements, transitioning to graphite, gravel, and ores at the middle, with clamp down tannins bearing their teeth at back, followed by a gripping, no-quit finish. The wine opened slowly over the next two days, revealing all that is fine, pure...and perhaps even hallowed...in Classed Growth Left Bank Bordeaux. Striking presentation and delivery for a Fifth Growth, even in this exceptional vintage. No point opening these now; this bottle showed the tightest of the three tasted to date. Unlikely to reach maturity before 2035.

Starting in on my own collection of 2000 left bank, and it was an auspicious start. I have had some lesser 00 from a friend's collection in the last year, in this was the best I recall so far. Confirming others on this site, it was quite sharp and backward out the bottle, I quickly decanted it and left decanter open for half hour before we started it with the meal. It takes a full hour to get going and I kept savoring through to dessert maybe 2.5 hrs total with plenty of time in the glass. Not at all fragile, I'm sure it would be fine the next day. It needs steak or other hearty dish. Aromas were medium not shy but not super expressive either. Bright cherry on top of classic 2000 deep cabernet plum black current and wood that I detected in all 2000 left bank so far. On the palate good purity and power with classic Cantemerle leather tar and some cigar box with some sharp acid and integrated tannins that get silky with some time. I agree it is fundamentally a straightforward country style but it is getting some layering of complexity between the fruit and leather/tar.

This is totally different than it tasted in 2003 when the fruit was completely suppressed and the wine was more or less paint stripper. But I was convinced to buy it, and of course I'm crying I didn't get cases at $28 but that is true for all Bordeaux back then. Luckily I went back and picked up more mid decade.

I am giving it 91-92 with potential to reach 93. Nobody knows, but based on this showing, other 00 chateaux I tried, comments on this site and discussion with experts that have access to a lot of wine, I think 00 is still way too young. I noticed some on this site have had a tough time with this wine in the last 1-2 years and that is how 00 has been, jus getting drinkable in 2014. 00 (and this wine) may not peak for another 5 years, and this vintage may prove to be one for the ages. I experienced two peaks with 96 so beware of a lull. I am not going to touch more than 5% of my left bank 00, stay tuned for more reviews in 6-12 months. Unless you detect fragile wines losing their fruit core buy some early drinking 05s and this and that to keep you occupied. Of course, I could be wrong your mileage may vary .... but I don't think so.

Be that as it may, I savored every last drop. It's not the best wine in the world, but I really like it. I'll pick it over some other styles that I would objectively score 93 or 94. Left bank 00 has a certain je ne sais quoi ...

A much improved effort. We have held on to this case for over 5 years since buying it and as time has evolved, so has the wine, rather nicely!
Dark garnet with intense tearing. A strong aroma of earth, berries, leather-sack, with a hint of clove-spice alongside a miniscule toast hint. The taste evolves nicely in the mouth with some added peppered undertone, a 20-second lingering bouquet of jam and floral berries (contributed by the Cabernet Franc). Impressive!

This one fell short from the last...It was as if this bottle was 5 years younger than the last one I drank. You can taste the potential, but this one was tight and backward with hints of coffee and chalkiness...Leading me to believe, its a HOLD or Drink depending on your bottle at hand. Variation is a part of the game...But it was barely miid level Bordeaux at best, and nowhere near its potential. A soul wasted...

(3/24/21) From a 750ml bottle purchased from a local retailer. The wine was decanted for 3 hours.

This example was loaded with cassis and cranberry on the nose and was just beginning to show a touch of tobacco leaf. The palate was well concentrated and absolutely packed with cassis. The balance was excellent, and the tannins were ripe and very much in check.

It was certainly no sin to pull the cork on this bottle. I expected it to be completely (or almost completely) primary, but that’s what I was looking for—a really nice young wine just entering its drinking window. Cantemerle seldom fails me, and this bottle was perfect for tonight. 13% abv. (***+/16.5/93)

the wine starts very hard. opens up after an hour to a nice aroma of red berries, oak, mineral & soil. first impression is classic Bordeaux.
the real problem is in the palate, no fruit what so ever.
after 1 hour: harsh bitterness & spice in the mouth makes it almost undrinkable . very hard alcohol taste & most of the aroma disappears too.
personally i don't see this wine benefiting from age.

Purchased these a few years ago after tasting during a tasting menu and really enjoying it. I was nervous having not tried it since and seeing the reviews over the years. It was everything that I expected —some Brett funk on the nose on opening which becomes less intense with time but adds some interest. Red fruits, cassis, subtle leather, all classic Bordeaux but not super intense. The finish is a bit short and the acid and tannins are definitely there. My husband preferred with food but for me this was just a great non-intellectual enjoy while reading a book bordeaux. I would have saved for day 2 but it was gone (and probably mostly me).
I compared this side by side with the 2009 which is arguably the better wine and was preferred by my husband. But for me, the 2010 was everything I hoped it would be.

I hold and have tried many vintages from this Chateau, but this is the youngest I've quaffed. This bottle is at some variance from a bottle tasted last year. This isn't your father's Cantemerle. This came across quite charming and personable. I may say this was classic, but still nodded toward new world in a way. Still firm, but engaging with warm, smoky aromas. This wine was marked by black currant, saddle leather, green tobacco and slate. Plus finish that extended in waves. Round and broad with flavors in the mouth at the same time. Great vintage for them. 94

Bought this today on a whim, unfortunately without my phone to read these reviews. One the most tannic wines I have ever tasted, quite undrinkable at first pop. Will wait several more hours and days, as recommended, since years are now out of the equation. This continues my experience with the highly touted 2010 vintage, i.e. I think I have had perhaps not a single enjoyable bottle from 2010 Bordeaux, although some riojas from 2010 are quite enjoyable now. For comparison, the 2014 Cantemerle was delicious and $35, the 2010 is undrinkable and I paid $75, expecting far more. My experience is however limited.

edit: 3 hours later, sloshed in a carafe, still quite tannic, not drinkable yet.

edit: after 4.5 hours, beginning to be drinkable. tempting, but not at all ideal. The problem now is this is the only bottle of red wine in the house, so can I wait till tomorrow or later?

edit: on the second day, it was enjoyable but still a bit tight.

edit: on the third day, it was finally opening up a bit. genuinely enjoyable, but still a bit tannic, and nowhere near worth the $75 price, at least to me. I advise saving several more years.

edit: we finished it the fourth day, good but still mixed it with milder rioja. i still recommend the qpr of the 2014, but have not had any lately, so don't really know. But at this price I recommend instead wines like a livia fontana barolo 2014.
