2008 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

7/20/2013 - Tim Heaton Likes this wine: NR

PnP, served non-blind. Consistent with prior bottles and absolutely on point right now. Bright, powerful aromas of crushed stone, honey, apples, pie crust and Med spices. Medium(+) body, with vibrant acids, medium + finish. Just lovely, if slightly modern. Hard to imagine it getting better, but would not be surprised, either. 13,0% abv, drink thru 2018

Consistent as the day is long, these later model Droins (especially the awesome 2019s) continue to steal the show for me. These are full bodied Chardonnays that have a sense of finesse and utter focus. The lemon juice and orange zest flavors enliven the palate, with a subtle bead of vanilla-meets-chalk providing perfect frame for the unctuous fruit. Drink now just cuz it’s tasty or hold with confidence for 6-7+ years. Sealed with DIAM.

Yes, just what you'd expect from a Grand Cru Chablis.
Super elegant and complex. Intriguing yellow-green color. Earthy, funky, savory and great minerality that really drives this. Did not sense the citrus others have mentioned. Just as well because that tart citrus style is not a favorite at the moment.
Ready on opening. Suggest a good chill as well, though that could just be a function of the Phoenix warm weather. We now do that with almost all wines from April to November.
Drinking beautifully today and should hold for a few years at least.

And a side note on the Diam corks (which Realm recently began using). These corks may be more impervious to taint, but they are hard as nails and a bear to extract. I've tried opening with the electric opener and the Ah-So (aka: The Butler's Friend) with no success. The only one that I can get to work is the Winged Corkscrew (which seems out of fashion these days). Is it just me or is anyone else having this problem? I almost never go wrong chalking it up to operator error so I'll go with that for now.

Light golden straw color. Smells lots if cheese, honey, brie, cabbage and elderberry flowers. It tastes a bit acidic, a bit weak and unbalanced. The wine suffers a bit from being served blind next to a Leflaive village Puligny '08 which was undisputed white WOTN. After a while lemons dominate the palate, and it seems thin and chemical. Anaemic and disappointing. Guessed Chablis blind, but would never guess this was a grand cru. Very disappointing.

Another pristine bottle. A beautiful Grand Cru Chablis. All of the elements you expect from a Les Clos. No sign of premox or other oxidisation problem. I would use again the same descriptors as in my 2022 note. At age 11 years, at an early peak. As I said in my earlier note, assuming premox is not an issue, I can see the 2013 drinking well out to say 2037.

Solid Chablis, good structure and minerally. Nose seems a bit closed. Next day didn't budge too much either.

<edit: ignorant comment about diam10 - diam10 is legit, doesn't indicate maximal aging duration>

For me personally, I'd prefer Rav Chablis, one more data point for me that producer trumps everything.

Color is medium gold with lightening at the rim. Nose shows honey, lemon oil, and a slight hint of spice. On the palate, intense flavors of lemon integrate with a honeyed component and are nicely framed by a slight salinity and acidity (which is well-integrated). Long finish and an excellent Chablis from one of the best producers.

I'm not sure what was going on here, but this was just simply weak juice. Not pox'd. And like tinybubbles, I really couldn't tell what was off. You could drink it, but you didn't want to, and I dumped 80% of the bottle.

A lazy Sunday lunch - Bordeaux blind, Raveneau, PYCM, Yquem, Dom Rose and etc. (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner, VA): The color is darker, more golden, than the 08 Raveneau Blanchot. The first note is caramel. Coiled nose displaying deeply toned yellow citrus, honey, caramel, lanoline and limestone. Exceptional concentration, deeply toned dense ripe yellow fruit, very focused but tight, mouth puckering acidity, strong mineral and a medium to long coiled dense yellow citrus driven finish with honey and limestone at the end. Bill finds the initial caramel expression bothersome. It is not premoxed but not as expressive and fresh as the 08 Blanchot. In my experience, Dauvissat tends to shutdown harder than Raveneau. This was one of the greatest young white wines of my life. I am not sure how this will develop but doubt that it will fulfill the original promise. I like it more than others.

Drank blind next to the 2010 Christian Moreau Les Clos. DIAM 10. Strong showing tonight...salty, tons of tart lemon zest, crushed slate...this had everything you look for in a good Chablis. Much more focused than the 2010 yet still retaining plenty of complexity. It's worth noting that this was still showing a kiss of oak on the finish and could use some more time to settle down...but when it's this good already, why wait?

Mouth: Medium minus tannin, medium acid, apple and spice – cinnamon (?) after the ripeness of the nose there is very slight greenness in the mouth. The wine has a long finish though the fruit does not carry through

Med golden with orchard fruit, slightly creamy with citrus note. Very concentrated on palate, distinct crisp acidity of chablis with mineral driven core. However, the wine seems to be ahead of itself, perhaps due to oxidation which could just be what it was intended to be, more like a 2003 bt.

From 75cl, perfect cork, bright pale-yellow colour, comme il faut. Weighty, intensely concentrated, sharp lemony GC Chablis at the start of its drinking window. Still massive, muscled-up, unyielding. The statistical chances of my remaining two bottles not being premoxed are so low I feel like an idiot, but here goes: If you chance upon an intact bottle, it will be best from 2025++. In this condition: Outstanding wine from a great vintage. 91+(+)P

A top performer that keeps getting better, the 2016 Malandes Les Clos is juicy and succulent while still maintaining all the Chablis typicity you’d expect from this top Grand Cru site. The color is limeaide fluorescent yellow-green, with flavors of clementine, lime and lemon juice and zest, quince, and ripe yellow pear. Enveloping and viscous in a way that doesn’t ever burden the acidity and lift, with buoyant persistence throughout consumption. One of the best values on release.

In a great spot now, but could hold longer if desired. Sealed with DIAM 10. Excellent. 94-95 points.

Simply stunning. A very youthful medium yellow, nose is mineral/stone, with citrus pith back notes. Impeccably balanced, explodes across the palate with stony citrus and a mouth-watering acidity that really fires the salivary glands, leading to a long, chalk-dusty finish that lingers long. The palate also has some breadth and heft, with some leesy notes and a generous mid-palate fullness, while the overall impression is one of elegance and lightness. Really super wine. Based on this bottle, no rush at all.

Although not completely premox (as was the '02 Fevre Bourgros I opened first) it is clearly on its way there. Just barely drinkable, so still a disappointment.
I find it hard to convey how depressing it is to find so many of my white burgundies suffering from premature oxidation. It leads me to open one with trepidation these days, & to have another on hand in case. The Burgundian wine industry owes its customers at least a complete explanation for this wide-spread phenomenon, if not some degree of compensation.

Side by side Dauvissat Clos 11 blind - not much of a difference to be honest, the wines showed really quite similar. The Raveneau was probably a bit more giving and generous but both were typical high class Chablis that will benefit from 5 years + in bottle to really show their potential. Felt like we should have decanted longer.
