12/27/2019 - JonathanP wrote: 89 pointsSlow ox’ed for four hours. Showing fairly well. A fairly bright profile with some red and black fruit, herbs, blood and bone, and earth. Tannins are fairly resolved and this is now quite lithe on the palate. Perhaps a little too bright without sufficient power for a higher score. Product of the vintage. Very solid wine all up though. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (4) |

2/2/2022 - JonathanP wrote: 91 pointsDouble decanted and then followed over two days. Hint of bricking but appearance is still very youthful. A nice level of complexity on the nose. Fruit is dominated by tart cherry flesh, cherry stone, raspberry, blood orange, dried flowers, and tea tree. Ripe but remains quite fresh. Zippy on the palate. Tannins are still a little powdery but the mouthfeel is fairly supple with a low-to-moderate degree of astringency. Good length. Wine holds up extremely well over 30 hours with very little movement. Drinking well now, but I think this will continue to develop nicely over the coming 5+ years. Very good QPR. 6 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

12/27/2019 - JonathanP Likes this wine: 92 pointsSlow ox’ed for 4 hours before drinking and it was open enough to show some black cherries, earth and some nice rocky detail. Floral too. Nice concentration for the vintage and not overly bright. In fact it’s very well balanced. I think this will be better in a few years but not a crime to open now with a decent airing. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

2005 Château Duhart-MilonPauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more |
2/28/2021 - JonathanP wrote: 90 pointsDouble decanted 4 hours before drinking. Even still, this is fairly austere and tightly wound. Fruit is dark. Very dark. Dominated by cassis with some ripe plum. This is accompanied with a fair whack of cedar and oak. Earth and dark chocolate add complexity. Tannins are starting to loosen up but this could probably use another 10 years. My only hope is the fruit doesn’t fade leaving an oaky shell of a wine. Hold or decant for hours. 6 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

2009 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du PyGamay more |
1/19/2013 - JonathanP wrote: 92 pointsAfter an hour of air this showed excellent integration and subtle evolution since my previous bottle, from about 17 months ago. Beautiful red fruit - with a hint of darker fruit too - but this is contrasted by wet earth, undergrowth, leaves/stems and a spine of granite/minerals. Very good complexity. Medium intensity and weight on the palate, it is balanced, silky and relatively long. A beautiful bottle. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

2010 Giaconda Shiraz Estate VineyardBeechworth more |
2/14/2013 - JonathanP wrote: 93 pointsCork. Still a bit reductive, but this blows off over an hour. This is a really complex, savoury shiraz that treads the line between intensity, concentration and elegance. The fruit profile is dark and ripe, but if anything, plays a supportive role to the smoke, coal, bloody meat, black olive, leather, floral characters and spice flavours, which really shine through. This is ball of energy on the palate - with great acid delineation and refined tannins - it's only 13% alc! Good length and an almost quinine-like bitterness on the finish. This has a great life ahead of it. As much as I appreciate the Giaconda Chardonnays, I wonder whether the Shiraz's are not the pick of the bunch. I'm sure this will continue to improve over the next 5-10 years and should be good for another 5-10 after that. Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

2011 Château Thivin Côte de BrouillyGamay more |
1/20/2024 - JonathanP wrote: 90 pointsBest bottle of this Cote de Brouilly to date. Everything has come together very nicely and all the elements are integrated and in perfect balance. Lots of juicy red fruit with good minerality and perhaps a little less of the briar notes of previous bottles. Smack bang in the middle of its drinking window. 1 person found this helpful, do you? 2010 Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du RoyPinot Noir more |
3/3/2013 - JonathanP wrote: 89 pointsNose was moderately expressive from the get go, but more so after two hours of slow ox, revealing cherry pit, lemon pith, clove, violets and earth/minerals. Good intensity and focus on the palate, which is medium bodied. Tannins are polished and impart a subtle grip to the finish, but the highlight here are the bright acids which lend the wine great freshness and purity. This really hits a sweet spot - excellent QPR. Drink now with a good airing or in 5-10 years time. |

6/11/2013 - JonathanP wrote: 89 pointsFresh orchard fruit, guava and a little citrus element. Moderately sweet with a zippy finish. While not overly cerebral, this wine is tasty, light and very drinkable. A versatile wine that will drink well with many different foods. |

4/13/2014 - JonathanP wrote: 91 pointsScrewcap, 11% alc. A very fresh and pure, citrus-driven, Riesling. This is all about acid and structure, with lime, lime blossom, sour apple, bath salts, and minerals providing plenty of high notes. Not aggressive in any way though, with excellent balance and decent intensity and length. Will probably improve over the medium term. |

2010 Best's Great Western Shiraz Bin No 0more |
4/15/2023 - JonathanP wrote: 91 pointsScrewcap. Drunk over two days. Really solid Victorian Shiraz. There’s plenty of blackberry and plum, but also lots of savoury elements including liquorice, cedar, bramble and some smokey meats. It’s ripe, open and a little plush on the palate but not overly so. Alcohol is well in check. Acids are fine and tannins resolving and fairly powdery. Drinking pretty well now. Held up nicely over the two days without too much movement. |

2010 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Le DomaineCabernet Franc more |
1/30/2013 - JonathanP wrote: 87 pointsMagenta-ruby in colour. Tight bouquet of crushed raspberries, yuzu, green tobacco/herbs, snapped sapling and damp clay. These flavours reassert on the palete, which is high toned, minerally and light-to-medium bodied. Tannins are moderate and slightly chalky. Nice complexity at this stage and drinking pretty well now - particularly for is freshness and crunch. |

2011 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Großes GewächsNahe more |
11/24/2013 - JonathanP wrote: 94 pointsConsumed over two days. This simply smashing Grosses Gewächs presenting a pale yellow robe and weighing in at 13% alc. There is brilliant transparency to the fruit, which is a pure and fresh expression of pithy pink grapefruit, lime and lemon, stony minerality, and a hint of apple. The palate is also dominated by a powerful acid-driven citrus profile, containing lovely weight and a full body. Entry is a little zingy and the mineral laden spine carries the fruit to long, focused finish. A truly excellent wine that has a wonderful 10-15 years ahead of it. |

6/7/2013 - JonathanP wrote: 94 pointsAn elegant Monprivato with bright red fruit, dried herbs, roses and a hint of liquorice. Good acidity and refined tannins, resulting in a silky mouthfeel. Great balance - excellent concentration but nothing more than medium bodied. Really lovely - shows what this might become in 15+ years. |

2009 Château des Tours Côtes du RhôneRed Rhone Blend more |
12/25/2013 - JonathanP wrote: 78 pointsDisappointed with this. There is an overload of raisiny red and black fruit, dried herbs, liquorice and some subtle spice. The fruit is way overripe for me and the wine is alcoholic and lacking definition. On the palate this is rich, full bodied, hot and out of balance. Should be kept away from naked flames. |

2011 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Spätlese GoldkapselNahe more |
5/3/2013 - JonathanP wrote: 94 pointsAs the others have said, this is a fantastic, vibrant and fresh GK Spätlese. White stone fruit, sweet citrus reduction (lemonade fruit), hint of spices, and just enough slate/minerality. Although rich and relatively powerful on the palate there is a real sense of elegance and lightness that makes this extremely moreish. Excellent structure, with the sweetness balanced by some slick acidity. Drunk this over three days and it didn't budge much. Although dangerously drinkable now, this seems to have all the components for a long and wonderful life. |

5/28/2013 - JonathanP wrote: 94 pointsHad to try another of these - and like the previous bottle, was very impressive. So fresh and vibrant - with white peach/apricot, apple, lemonade fruit and a long minerally finish. Beautifully structured, intense, balanced and elegant. Is there a better Spätlese at such a young age? |

1/25/2014 - JonathanP wrote: 93 pointsDrunk over 2 days. This was brilliant again - just a delight to drink. Flavours are very clean and have great purity, with apple, stone fruit, pineapple, and sweet citrus reduction mixing together beautifully. The sweetness is balanced by a focused and zingy minerality which provides drive and cut across the palate. Nice length. While obviously young, this is currently drinking very well and should age effortlessly for 15 years. |

9/28/2015 - JonathanP wrote: 92 pointsNo formal note, but this was lovely, with orchard fruits, citrus zest, honeysuckle and subtle spice notes. Great concentration on the palate with a creaminess that is cut by a focused acidity. Great now but should be even better in 10 years. |

5/8/2016 - JonathanP wrote: 91 pointsNot surprisingly, this is still quite primary, with lots of fruit (apple, white peach, citrus), florals (honeysuckle), and some slatey minerals. 2010 Mount Mary ChardonnayYarra Valley more |
5/7/2023 - JonathanP wrote: 91 pointsDrunk over a couple of hours. This is a broad shouldered Chardonnay with plenty of white stone fruit, pear, white flowers, and cashew. There are citrus and minerality notes if you really look for them, but you’ve got to look hard. It’s definitely more Meursault than Chablis. Having said that, there is sufficient acidity to keep everything in check and focused. Good length. Drink now or hold for another five years. |
