This is a profoundly herbal, light-touched syrah with a nose that shows some bloody notes (already?) as well as some tart red fruit. It has the lightness of something that may have seen some carbonic, but there's far more profundity here than your glou glou crap. The palate is elegant and lithe, with beautiful red fruit, florals, and brightness, along with generous acidity. The tart red berries are absolutely delicious here, and there's this big hit of bloody meat that reminds you of the grape we're talking about. There's no mistaking this for northern Rhone, but this is some serious syrah all the same.

7/16/2015 - Keith Levenberg Does not like this wine: 70 points

This was bad, obviously, although not quite bad enough to be fun for its comedic value in a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 fashion, and thus a disappointment on two fronts. It actually comes across varietally identifiable on the entry, with a saline, bacony twist to the fruit which is not quite as slathering as expected; oaked, to be sure, but still at least tasting like oak and not like a creamsicle. Then just when you're saying, "Hmmm..." that's when it gets slathering and goes down the gullet like Manischewitz. It's 16% alcohol which surely contributes to the port-like sweetness but I will admit that wasn't the only thing going on.

To criticize him and his review because it's miles from the other reviewers is just laughable. If you don't like his reviews or agree with them, then you don't have to read them.

8/22/2015 3:13:00 PM - Do you know that he bought it? , Maybe he just tried it - at a tasting where it was being poured. I haven't had this exact wine, but I've had ones like it, and I think a 70 sounds about right. Don't agree - then try it and post your own review. I couldn't care less if his opinion (and mine) are outliers. There are millions of people who love the Olive Garden and Subway, many more than those who hate it.

I see reviews everyday of these wines from people who love them - I don't take the time to comment and try to convince them they are wrong or that they have an agenda. Maybe Keith hit a nerve?

Hmmm. Interesting. I've saved this bottle for years, thinking it would be a treat. Maybe too young, but I doubt it. The fruit is fading, and this is such a cough syrupy, alcoholic, hot finish, mess. Just not my thing. I'd say this is falling apart and was better in 09, when last tasted.
Two nights later - this has potential to be something in a decade. Let the last bottle rest. Caramel notes coming through that make it somewhat appealing. One sixth of this bottle is sediment at this point, not exaggerating.

This is a fine old bottle that has really come alive with air. It's got a classic Shiraz violets and eucalyptus/American oak nose with plummy fruit and savory balsamic aromas. Still robust but nicely resolved with a clear-running texture, there's a rusty edge to the tangy currant fruit with more eucalyptus and creosote notes. 13.5% abv in a ripe year, which is like 0.77 Mollydookers.

  • Comment posted by Seth Rosenberg:

3/13/2018 6:04:00 PM - I think the Mollydooker is a hybrid unit which combines both alcohol and residual sugar - about 16.2% alcohol and 2.2% RS. For pure alcohol, the Turley is the preferred unit equaling 15.7% alcohol.

HDH Burgundy Auction; 4/13/2018-4/14/2018 (Chicago, IL): An incredible nose and palate on this wine. Like what the hell, what is this wine, why haven't I heard of it before, and how do I acquire some? The nose is brilliant -- classic Australian eucalyptus and green herbs, minty and high-toned, and so much tart black fruit. Absolutely brilliant palate as well -- lithe and powerful, with herbal tones and bright acidity. Stunning and revelatory.

Seems fully developed now. Bright golden colour, conveying ripe white fruits, herbs and floral notes with developed smoky and faintly oily elements in a polished, medium weight package. Really nice balance, drinking beautifully right now (though I don't think this will get much better).

Opened an hour before pouring. Full yellow. Stone fruit, light petrol, and a hint of papaya. Medium weight, in fact comes across as rather elegant for this level. Fantastic clarity of fruit, glycerine feel with a touch of residual sugar, and great acidity that is perfectly folded in. Not the stoniest of Rieslings, but a good amount of soil on the finish. This has been superb on every occasion, and tonight was no different. No signs of slowing down either.

Spectacular wine. At first it's all about bright florality - sweet lilac and orchid scents with higher toned herbal notes in the background, but with some more air the ripe citrus and orchard fruit flavours become more prominent on the nose and palate. There's a saline mineral character that comes out on the (very, very long) finish, and impeccable balance with powerful acids keeping it very focused and light on its feet. Glad I've got a bunch of these.

Dinner at Boston Fish Market (Des Plaines, IL): As far as dry riesling goes, this is incredibly convincing. The nose shows tons of minerality and ripe fruit, as well as some herbal notes. The palate is where this shines, with great cut and freshness. The fruit here is relatively sweet, but it serves to balance the acidity and mineral qualities. Not thick and waxy bit light and crisp.

Riesling night at HaiSous (Chicago, IL): A super interesting wine, funky and complex and weird at the same time. There's a whole mix of stuff going on, tropical fruit, green herbs, rocks and stones... The palate is crisp and a little waxy, but there's enough acidity here to hold it together. For me, this isn't the most viscerally enjoyable riesling, but it is definitely a real thinker.

Ethanol, white rubbery, stonedruit, lovely. Very clean and bright. Pinch of yellow citrus zest. Palate has a big punch of fruit up front plus driving acid. Very good. For an off-the-shelf pop-and-pour that’s about perfect. Not a Riesling expert, but cellarworthy?

  • Comment posted by Seth Rosenberg:

4/7/2019 8:33:00 PM - I'd say yes to the cellarworthy question. These wines have a solid track record of aging - they age on the acid, not on tannins. 15 was a somewhat burly vintage so I'd wager that 10-15 years til peak.

Dinner at Testaccio (Chicago, IL): Ugh, I hate having to admit that Salil is right (especially about stuff like dry riesling). This wine was pretty damn good. It started out very peachy and fruit forward, somewhat Keller-like but lacking the weight on the backend. There's a little bit of white pepper and spice here, but it's at the end of the dinner where this really started singing -- this became so incredibly saline, and the mineral lift emerged prominently on the finish. Compelling stuff. Am I going to run out and buy more dry Austrian riesling after this? Not yet.

Just got it, had to crack it. I love Prager's wines and have since I had my first (96 Klaus on release), and I'm always a bit nervous when I have one: will it be as awesome as I remember/hope (just like when I have Harold's after a long time.). The answer is almost always "yes" as it was tonight. Holy crap - it's one of the noses that throws your head back: so intense and potent, with aromas of steely minerals, white florals, mountain herbs, white pepper, grapefruit, lemon, brown spices. Maybe a bit of apple and peach? There isn't much of the usual broth/peach/peach pit that I get in Austrians and that is partially because this is so damn young, but also because it's like a whole different level of intensity. The flavors are great but this is so damn expansive and perfumed, while also so fresh and bright and focused. The palate started off brutally concentrated to the point where it was kind of fuzzy and overwhelming, but it did open up somewhat with time - still way way too young, but it did give some pleasure: lemon, minerals, white flowers - there is so much extract and flavor that it almost feels solid. The finish is long and crisp and minerally. A fucking monstrosity of a wine that needs 25 years to come around. Nose - 5.5+?/6, Palate - 5+/6, Finish - 5.5+?/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5+?/2 = 17.5+/20 (with 18-19/20 potential.)

Pizza night with Austrians and random reds: Fantastic stuff. This is in a great place right now - there are layers of mature baked apple, peach, and other orchard fruit flavours with burnished tinges, and smoky and mineral accents around the fruit that keep getting more complex and layered with air, with all the flavours coming together really seamlessly on the palate. Amazing depth and complexity here with powerful acids beneath the bright fruit, and a remarkably long finish.

I was dodging the blood spatters so I couldn't fully concentrate on this, but it was similar to previous bottles. Big gold nose of chicken broth, saline, bitter peach pit, sharp minerals and flint, maybe a bit of nut. Quite wicked on the palate - salty, brothy and minerals. More austere than some of the previous showings, but still classic Austrian Smaragd, albeit on the big-boned side. I liked it this time around but didn't love it as much as other times. Probably 16/20.

One of those wines that felt more interesting than pleasurable at points - I was surprised at how oxidative this showed, with some of the savoury/slightly nutty elements I'd expect in a Jura white or a Savennieres, rather than a Riesling. There's still plenty of ripe white fruit at its core and a mineral base underneath, though the oxidative elements felt a bit distracting. Will be curious to see how leftovers develop.
