Working on a “drink the good stuff” philosophy, I opened this for a Monday dinner with leftovers. Why not! Initially as stern as an angry nun teaching 8th graders, it mellowed out over two hours, though never became soft or cuddly. Instead it maintained a perfectly starched collar, dark tie, and well tailored suit level of elegance, with a warm smile and engaging banter. Honestly it carried the image of the late Anthony Barton. Classic Bordeaux, it showed all the aged tobacco, understated cassis fruit and firm tannins, even more than twenty years after what was at one time considered a “modern” vintage. It demanded a rare ribeye, but alas it was not to be. Still, this feels like a wine that is emerging into a mid-life stage, with ample substance to carry on for as long as necessary. Just be sure to dress for dinner.

A couple of nights before X-mass and we had to finish the evening on something special, so out came a 375. It's been almost 2 years since a rather shy bottle and looking back at my former notes, this time around the wine was a little more open for business. I really like this vintage for it's rich roundness while it manages to stay light on it's feet. The nose was beautiful and the texture great, but the wine is still almost primary (crazy at this age). I wish it showed more complexity which it gave hints of towards the end. it's going to be really hard to give this another 20 years. Patience is highly recommended....

This is a pretty great wine. The first day, it was an almost odd composite of distincitive elements, each intriguing on its own merits: tannins that were stern but also zingy, freshening acidity, fruit that still conveyed a sense of lushness. Made me think of the early Picasso cubist paintings that are so well-organized, even though the immediate appearance is completely disjoint. Second day, the components marry up, and the wine is knock-out in both weight and content. Serious, even profound, and an incredible value, in the world of wine, at under $30.

Hello,

I was given a bottle of this wine a few years ago, the 2006 Morgon.

I know zero about wines and would simply like to know how many years can I keep this for before it will go bad? I rarely drink wine and I am saving this for a special occasion but I don't want it to go bad and waste it.

I would appreciate any comments.

Thank you.

12/28/2014 11:09:00 AM - That is a delicious bottle of wine, but it is not one for the ages. It is also very fragile, given the way it is made, and storage in a kitchen is not ideal. I would look for an opportunity to drink it soon. I hope you enjoy.

Incroyable beaujolais, élevé comme un bourgogne, cerise kirsh au nez, cerise en bouche, pas confituré, tannins soyeux, la touche vivante et fraîche du beaujolais, un grand vin.

A big wine, a bit more so than is my preference, and I'd advise those holding it to listen to the CT comments saying wait. Remarkably it's not fully ready. You get a sense there is more to come, the wine is still somewhat closed off, the tannins still a bit too much in charge until it arrives at a burgundy "forget the food and see and taste only me" moment

8/23/2013 11:54:00 AM - I do love Muscadet in general and Briords in particular. I don't think anything went wrong. It wasn't a tainted bottle. This vintage has never really been my favorite -- it's just a little blocky and flat; it lacks the tension of my favorite years. It may also just be a stage. Looking at others' notes, the problem may just be me.

Coravaned a bottle with the Weygandt crew at the big Loire red tasting today. Developing well, tannins smoothed, nary a sign of green or barkiness, but fruit is still timid, so gives the impression of being closed. An accomanying taster suggested he'd give it another five years. It was also showing a green olive aroma that I found captivating, so I'm an optimist here.

....

We uncorked this bottle the following Friday, after about a glassful had been drawn out via Coravin the previous Saturday. The wine had developed nicely, showing very impressive finesse, smooth tannins, and excellent cabernet flavors - in no way worse than a very good Bordeaux, imho. Lacked just a bit of depth and acidity to make it really great. Did not last long - the second day after uncorking, deterioration was evident.

New Yorkers welcome West Coast visitors to Peking Duck House, but the wine Gods were angry. (Peking Duck House- Midtown): Not a good showing. Shows a touch of oxidation with mushrooms and a bit of sulfur. Lean and mean on the palate with the acidity run amok, though underneath there is some quince and lemon curd trying to make a go of it. I think Cliff said he decanted it a day, but it may have needed even more time. C+/C.

(375) Color is dark gold, there are some distinct oxidative notes on the nose. It actually improves a bit with air, but there are still some caramelly oxidative notes, mixed with the honey and quince. Good length, though. I enjoyed this by pretending it was 30 years old rather than 11.

I was nervous about opening this after a previous note mentioned that the bottle didn't show well. However, this was excellent. We opened this last night, double decanted, had a glass, and left it for tonight.

Last night, this showed fantastic complexity on the nose: tropical fruits, a hint of sherr....and lots of fantastic chalky minerality on the palate, with great body and good acidic spine to back things up. A very long finish. This didn't really taste demi-sec, closer to just sec.

Today, even better. I can't begin to describe the nose: it just keeps changing as we sit with it. Hints of mango, chalk, sea salt, slate, lime. On the palate, this is much fuller bodied than I remember it from last night. Still great acidic spine, and mouthfilling pineapple and chalk on the palate. Great, long finish. After the Robert Fleury Extra Brut champagne, you definitely see this is demi-sec, but the sweetness is just a perfect complement to everything else.

On the nose, this is everything that Joly Savennierres that we had a few months ago was not. This was a head-turner. We paired this with a mango-jalapeno-tuna-tartare and then scallops with summer tomatoes and lemon-pepper pappardelle. Went wonderfully with everything.

The cork released with an alarmingly soft sigh, but the wine was gorgeous, vigorous, seeming even a bit less matured than some of the prior notes. And given whispers of prem-ox affecting this vintage, this was reassuring for my only other bottle. Pitch-perfect Vouvray typicity, waxy and honeyed with a hint of cheesy pungency. More rich and broad than the '07 pétillant with a touch of sweetness that proved welcome against a wide array of sushi. Outstanding.
