2014 Domaine Ponsot Bulles Luisantes

Burgundy Aligoté more

1 hour upon opening serving into Riedel white wine glass (“Root” day): Medium lemon

Toasty, yeast, stone fruits like apricots, caramel. Taste this blind and almost impossible to guess this is made with Aligote.

Fine mousse that adds to the texture on palate. Minerality is great with lots of good fruits as support. Very nice wine to enjoy now with some time in glass.

94 points easy.

Light transparent ruby in color. Inviting and lovely nose of woody spice, cinnamon, red fruit and a mild earthy truffle. Nice core of tart red cherry fruit shoots through the mid-palate. Even some red apple. Elegant. Tannin nicely balanced. Length is pretty good. I'm of two minds on this wine: 1) for Bourgogne, it's quite tremendous; 2) for the retail price, it's merely good.

Juicy BR from Ponsot. Sour cherry and raspberry seeds with an earthy and herby touch to it. I love 2014 now!

Fine but not exciting. Underripe and probably on its last legs. Tart, with some soy pomegranate and Hoisin aromas. Did open up after an hour, but overall disappointing given what it is.

For a "simple" Bourgogne Rouge it was quite pleasing and not overpriced (approw. 12 Euro) like so many wines from Domaine Ponsot. It was a bit fleshy and rather fruitful. More a modern style Pinot Noirl. It's concentration was fair. Surely a simple quality but not thin or somehow tasteless like many other comparable Bourgogne Rouges. Nice treat. I remember it was finished off in a jiffy. ;-)
PS: The temperature indicator dot on the bottle didn't work at all. I heated the empty bottle up, but the spot remained white (see second photo). A nice idea anyway.

Some brett. Not awful, but borderline flawed. Meaty wine.

Earthy and dry - just a faint hint of underripe fruit but I really like this. Ready to go and should be solid for a while.

Lively ruby red of medium depth, clear.
Nose clearly on the fruit side, mainly cherries - at some point a hint of greenness, but it went away quickly. Nice palate, fresh, juicy, a bit thin at the beginning but it gained body and concentration over about one hour and became very enjoyable.

I love 2011s...this is drinking so well right now. On the nose, briary red fruit, a touch of cinnamon, a hint of dark earth...excellent complexity. On the palate, great acidity, more cinnamon and spice, mixed with vibrant red and black fruit. Soft, well-integrated tannin on the long finish. If this btl is representative, punches way above its paygrade and has plenty of time to develop more secondary characteristics...

Just okay. Had a bit of the schpritz when opened -- recorked, banged the bottle on the floor, it went away -- but the taste all evening was very simple. It wasn't corked or muted, just didn't have what I'd hoped for.

Opened an hr to get ready.
Nose: Mint, dark cherry, earthy
Clean cherry fruit, smooth tannin, a bit earth in the end, medium length.
Reminded me of an village wine. A well made bourgogne!

Day 2 open, unrefrigerated overnight. More of a sense of stem inclusion on the nose than my previous btl: briary nose, with a hint of green, but backed up by nice cranberry and wild strawberry. On the palate, excellent acidity, and very lightweight. On a bad day, maybe this would come off as thin, but today it seems lithe and elegant...the slightest hint of tannic structure on the finish. Very nice.

Day 3: Huh, last glass (again, unrefrigerated on the counter overnight), and everything came together. Somehow, the stems seem more subdued and a cherry note came out. No signs of oxidation, but best showing so far. If this bottle is representative, this will improve for a long time.

On the nose: soft stem inclusion, vanilla, sweet wild strawberry cola, with a hint of coconut. On the palate, lovely acid, sweet strawberry, cola, brambly blackberrry, and soft tannin on the finish, which is tamgy and a bit lean.

Pop and pour, notes from 45 min open. On the nose: briary red fruit, soft cola, soft plum, maybe a pyrazine note. On the palate, a touch hard, green pepper, plum, good density, and dense finely grained tannin. More stereotypically 2011 than previous bottles.

Gets a solid 90 for being a lovely mature BR. Nose has great pâte des fruits and a sous-bois/umami aspect. Still a good freshness on the fruit as well as evolved notes with old wood, fougere and slight balsamic. Nicely integrated and balanced.

Decanted and took a taste. Initially some mild reduction which quickly blows off. This seems to have shed its youthful exuberance and voluptuous fruit since I tried the first two bottles (spring 2012 and spring 2013). It starts off very closed, not at all forthcoming. Poured glasses after two hours. This is now showing a much more savory side than it did a few years ago. Some spice, fairly firm structure, coiled up, tannins are quite evident though nicely textured. E commented that it seemed young, and I agree. This needs to be left alone for a few years. It was delightful in its youth, and while it was still a pleasure and seems to have very good underlying material, it has retreated into its shell and I think it will benefit from another few years of aging. Excellent for its level!

After pulling the bizarro plug which Ponsot has switched to, the wine seems to have almost a rubber/plastic aroma (maybe some reduction? but not like any I've experienced), which fortunately dissipates within a few minutes. Lovely medium ruby color. It opens up to display a beautifully deep and penetrating nose loaded with dark fruit and spice. Nicely textured and explosive on the palate for a Bourgogne, with medium tannins. Juicy and succulent, but not overdone. Excellent wine at this level.

Sometimes I think Ponsot distinguishes his wines by throwing a handful of moss and mushrooms into every barrel. His wines are fungal and earthy, and this one is no exception. Still very young, but drinking nicely with a strong scent of mint and sour cherries, and good bite and balance on the palate. Good now, but I bet it will be interesting 5 to 10 years from now as well.

Quite aromatic, with deep, ripe red fruit. The palate shows some earth and a lot of ripe fruit, almost mulberry-like intensity; somewhat wild and disjointed. Not particularly deep or complex, but nice in a ripe, somewhat glossy, style. Worth noting that it has decent acidity. Seems like it needs time to settle down and coalesce.
