2009 Alamos Malbec

Mendoza more

1/16/2011 - BlackIce wrote: 80 points

This Malbec was a bit fruity on the nose. The taste reflected the fruit but also noted the alcohol which shows on the legs in the glass. It paired ok with Irish Gold cheese. Not bad for the price. Gets better with air after an hour or so.

2008 Trapiche Cabernet Sauvignon

Mendoza more

This needs to be decanted. After decanting, nose is full of cherry/plum. Bit of heat still. Taste: with decanting, the initial astringency is gone and wine is now more fully developed and balanced. Great QPR at $7 per bottle.

2015 Hin Areni Areni Reserve

Vayots Dzor more

9/25/2018 - BlackIce wrote: 87 points

A very drinkable and well made wine. Purchased at the winery in April 2018 in Armenia. Tasted the reserve at the winery. Just drank the bottle I purchased. It is both dry with some fruit and a little tannin on the back of the throat. The fruit component of Areni is somewhat similar to Plavac Mali which I've had in Croatia. Plavac Mali is a cross of Zinfandel and another grape. Areni is a local grape that has been in production for centuries. Areni is a delightful and delicious varietal.

Not a fan of this fruit bomb. My first fruit bomb. The 16% alcohol hit me like a moving freight train. This is like a sweet grape jelly that should be spread over toast or waffle. It even is similar to Port but without the Port thickness. Drinkable but barely so.

2008 Oxford Landing Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre

South Australia Grenache Blend, Grenache more

6/23/2011 - BlackIce wrote: 86 points

This GSM blend from South Australia is a blend (obviously) of: Grenache, Shiraz/Syrah and Mourvedre. Nose: Very fruity with plum qualities. Taste: Very fruity with no huge bite of alcohol/tannins. Very drinkable. Very new world. Great QPR.

For the price, this is a very drinkable white Bordeaux blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. The SB predominates. It is crisp/citrusy and still good even after drinking window has technically passed.

Nothing special with this Pinot. It is very light with a bit of fruit on the nose and palate. But nothing that grabs you.

2009 Val de Salis Marselan Vin de Pays d'Oc

more

7/6/2011 - BlackIce wrote: 84 points

I opened this bottle and drank over a 4 day period. Longer than my usual drinking period. Also, my first taste of Marselan (cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache). Nose: Raspberry or Tart cherry. Taste: Nice fruit (also raspberryish) that was not too hot and mellowed over a few days. It was very drinkable over the 4 day period. Great QPR given I paid $7 for the bottle.

Good but nothing spectacular. This white blend is actually 100% Vermentino aka Rolle. It is light and crisp citrus. Very similar to a Sauvignon Blanc.

Very delightful white blend. Similar to a Sauvignon Blanc with nice floral/citrus nose and nicely acidic/citrusy taste. Can't beat the $7 price!

Last bottle of this 2004 Tokaji. Another great bottle that reflects a sweetness offset by a citrus note that ensures this is not sickly sweet.

Served a chilled bottle at work and all who tasted enjoyed this wine. Alcohol is only 12%. It is sweet but not cloying or sickening and it has a bit of a citrus bite that really complements the sweetness. A very nice dessert wine.

7/1/2011 - BlackIce wrote: 88 points

This is my first tasting of Nero d'Avola from the Sicilian region of Italy. This was shared at work with colleagues and all greatly enjoyed this grape/bottle. It is somewhat similar to Syrah but is a bit more peppery with a plum taste. The finish is quite long and has notes of tobacco (?) that lingers on the tongue. For $7/bottle, cannot beat the QPR.

Bottle 2 was better than bottle 1. I opened it but did not drink it until 1 day later after first experience. this was ok but still plum/prune like. Alcohol is 15% so this will not age well since not a Port. Drink up or dump soon....
