1/20/2009 - iByron wrote: 88 pointsColor (5/5) is a dark maroonish purple that coats the glass. Color comes within 1-2 mm of the edge with an opaque eye. A drinking pour is opaque. The nose (12/15) is a room-filling cloud of cassis-leather and vanilla-cream-berry-dessert. The entry is soft but leads immediately into fine tannins that last through the finish. A mid-palate of cassis berry and 60% cacao chocolate, and leather. A long, dark-fruity finish of mocha-berry rounds things out with a hint of bitter coffee at the very end. This softens -- but does not weaken -- with air (14/20). Very well-made and may develop a bit with up to five years laying down (7/10), but it's very good now and a fine accompaniment to a simple meat dish. |

11/20/2008 - iByron wrote: 86 pointsColor (5/5): Glass-clinging ruby purple with some magenta highlights if you can believe that. Nose (12/15) of plums and purple berries and asparagus. Very nice and an unusual diversion from northern hemisphere Bordeaux blends (it's Malbec based after all). Palate/Finish (14/20): Chewy meaty mouthfeel that's also smooth and glassy. Almost a syrupy sensation but not thick or syrupy sweet; more like fruit in cream. If Cahors is a clay pot then this is a glass jar. Some ruggedness, but no roughness. Potential/Quality (6/10): Very good wine, if you're not used to Argentine Malbec this "Bordeaux Blend" will be a really different experience. Made to drink now and tastes very well-integrated so it's hard to imagine much development, but that may be my inexperience with Argentine Malbec talking. Pair this with lamb. |

8/13/2013 - iByron wrote: 71 pointsClear dark purple. Nondescript but pungent "cheap wine" and alcohol nose, matched on the palate. No tannins and low, out-of-joint acidity. All in all, not a pleasant drink, not even for this price point. |

6/2/2016 - iByron Likes this wine: 88 pointsDark garnet red in the glass. Decidedly fruit-forward nose of dark plum. Medium tannins from entry through the medium long finish. Medium full mouthfeel and medium acidity. Palate of black plum, vanilla, blackberry, and cocoa. Good place for barbecue now. |

12/6/2017 - iByron Likes this wine: 88 pointsDark purple in the glass with a black core. Blackberry, cocoa, and cassis on the nose and palate. Full body. Medium acidity. Medium tannins. Probably on the downward trend, but still a satisfying drink. |

2005 Bodega Septima Gran ReservaAgrelo Malbec Blend, Malbec more |
1/2/2011 - iByron wrote: 89 pointsSimply a gorgeous wine now. Near black in the glass, the nose still gives the cassis-chocolate vs plum-pepper-oak sensation. Lush mouthfeel, velvet tannins, and complex palate of creamy dark berries, mocha, and plum (again with Tannat contributing that long, black coffee finish). Nearly two years from previous tasting it's hard to discern any real development though it seems to have integrated a bit and opens up nearly immediately. Can generally be had for less than $20 so the QPR on this is through the roof. Great on its own and absolutely sings with a rich beef stew or pot roast. |

2/22/2009 - iByron wrote: 89 pointsColor (5/5): Dark purple. Consumed at a restaurant, so could not fully discern color. Nose (12/15): Cassis-chocolate nose burnished with plummy peppery silky sweet oak. Actually smells "juicy." Palate/Finish (15/20): Needs a minute to open up. Once it does, dark cassis, plum and coffee with a mid-palate of creamy blackberry and a longish dark coffee finish courtesy of the Tannat. Quality/Potential (7/10): The wine is designed to drink now and it does so very well. Should continue to drink well over the next 5-7 years, perhaps with some development as well. |

4/20/2013 - iByron Likes this wine: 89 pointsDark red purple in a tasting pour; near black in the full glass. Nose is full with forward dark fruit and a bit of subtle meatiness. Fruit-forward palate with subtle oak. Dark fruit jam with charcoal and tar on the finish. Tannins are soft but assert themselves a wee bit on the finish. Te darkness compensates for the forward fruit. Acidity is still where it needs to be and keeps it from being flabby. A very nice new world offering with an incredible QPR. DRink now. |

5/4/2011 - iByron Likes this wine: 89 pointsFirst tasting of the 2006 vintage of Bodega Septima's flagship blend, and it does not disappoint! The color is a deep purple, again near black in the glass as a full pour. (5/5) Nose is light on opening, but gives black fruit and mocha jam with some air (11/15). The palate is mouth-filling, smooth mocha with hints of blackberry and plum. Velvety tannins and coffee with 2% milk on the finish (16/20). As always it's a drink now wine, but what a wine it is (7/10), and it could certainly hang on through 2012. Still less than $20, meaning the QPR is very high. Drink while waiting for your Achával-Ferrer Quimera. |

6/14/2008 - iByron wrote: 78 pointsColor (3/5): Dark but clear amethyst that lightly coats the glass. By clear I mean Sangiovese clear. Can see right through the disc unobstructed. Nose (8/15): Alcohol at first. Surprisingly light nose of dark berries. Did not improve after decanting or a second day. Score is generous. Palate (12/20): Not much there upon opening. Didn't develop much after 30 minutes in the glass. On the second day I get black raspberry jam in a wooden mug. Tannins much more pronounced but not the mouth cleaners you'd expect. Lighter finish than I'd expect from the varietal, but what's there is a tart tannic black raspberry (not blackberry..black raspberry) and surprisingly lengthy. Potential (5/10): Really didn't get any sense that this would develop into much on the first day. I put this away for the night and popped a Pennsylvania Petite Sirah instead. Second day I'm feeling more benevolent. It could integrate a bit better though not much growth. |

6/19/2014 - iByron Likes this wine: 87 pointsWhen Petite Sirah gets the Aussie treatment! Dark purple; near black in a drinking pour. Blueberries and ash on the nose; echoed with undertones of vanilla on the full-bodied palate. Medium fine tannins; smooth acidity; medium short, dark-ish finish. A good entry point for Petit Sirah novices. Drink by 2016. |

9/13/2013 - iByron Likes this wine: 86 pointsStar bri...er...Clear gold in the glass showing slight signs of its age. Full nose of peppery citrus and mineral. Full mouthfeel with medium acidity. Rocky pink grapefruit rules the palate with slight cedar graphite on the short finish. Did not have this on release, but seven years from vintage it's quite interesting. Will be a good match with lemon-pepper chicken. Drink by 2016. |

2/25/2009 - iByron wrote: 85 pointsColor (5/5): Dark purple with color to the edge. Nose (12/15): Aged leather and dark purple fruit. Palate/Finish (12/20): Juicy stewed plum in a shoe. After time there is a sweet vanilla blackberry mid-palate, but something tart and iron-y is in the mix that, while not unpleasant, is not exactly endearing. The tannins are firm but forgiving. Quality/Potential (6/10): Well made and characteristic if a bit harsh. Should keep a good 5-7 years. Solid effort. |

8/19/2007 - iByron wrote: 88 pointsThe wine is an Autralian blend of 93% Shiraz and 7% Viognier. Color (5/5): Beautiful dark purple-magenta; opaque in the center of the glass. Nose (13/15): Typical Shiraz leather and dark fruit with some floral overtones. Imagine rubbing flowers on a saddle in the heat of the day. Palate (15/20): Plum and berry stew served in a leather bowl. A little hot right out of the bottle, but smooths out fairly quickly. My second glass had been decanted for about 45 minutes and went down easily. Wines like this define "mouthfeel" as you can hear your mother saying, "Chew your food," except this time the food is wine. The Viognier "kick" (endive and edible flowers...I can't think of anything else to call it) comes through in the finish. The finish is very long. It's like Shiraz-Shiraz-What was that?-Shiraz-Viognieeeeer. Potential (5/10): It smooths out really quickly with decanting and seems to be made to be consumed now. It's sealed with a screw cap that went "pop" when I opened it, so it may benefit somewhat from a few years' cellaring. |

A bit short on structure and lighter on the mousse than I prefer, but still a good classic Aussie sparkling Shiraz. Great value for the money, though more for the crowd than the connoisseur (see Ulithorne's offering for that). Gut rating. |
