Enjoyable--would have again. Welcome departure from California-style Chard, with notes more characteristic of Sauvignon Blanc.

Nice purple color, but young and unremarkable. Pretty flabby and lacking the spicy backbone of a good Malbec.

Not a bad Shiraz, though not of the character of some of the finer S. Australians. I felt the fire of
the palate overhwlemed most of the notes, though after 90 minutes out of bottle, I detected
faint notes of brown sugar and molasses. This would be a more enjoyable if the heat were dialed
down a notch or two.

2006 Razor's Edge Shiraz

Easy-drinking, with nice ripe fruit but I found it to be flabby and lacking in structure. Even after opening up over and hour or two, there's little acidity or tannin to give the wine much depth, and it ends up falling flat after the initial red and black fruit notes. The Razor's Edge Shiraz-Grenache possesses a bit more of what this one lacks.

2003 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 407

A good wine for the price. A bit more toward the Shiraz-resembling end of Cabernet with notes of dark blackberry fruit mixed with brighter cherry throughout--bordering on portish at times. Just enough acid and tannin to give it structure, but don't expect elegance.

Drank with Ian and Cheray to celebrate our engagement. Very very jammy off the bat, and seemed to be tamed a bit by some air time, but never lost enough of the initial syrupy quality for my taste.

Leading with densely packed fruit on the palate, this wine has a hint of spice and enough acidity to give some structure to the fruit. Classic in its representation of Australian Shiraz, this is a round wine that doesn't go over-the-top with the fruit (see: Marietta Cellars Angeli Cuvee). Complexity improves after some time to open.

Nicely aromatic and not nearly as overly jammy as many Australian Shiraz are, though not terribly impressive either. More refined than others, but not the most memorable structure or finish.

12/10/2008 - jmetvoice wrote: NR

A great wine for the price, this one hits you with the fruit you might expect from a McLaren Vale Shiraz, but stops short of overdoing as many Aussie wines do. Notes of fruit are nicely balanced with a bit of earth and spice. I agree with other reviewers that this wine benefits from a little extra time to open, as it is a bit rough at the finish upon opening due to heat that lingers just a bit too long. Let it mellow for an hour or more and you're left with a very pleasant wine.

Spicy and structured, this wine is a good example of the qualities that grenache imparts to great wines like those from Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The lack of overt fruit-forward character combined with supple tannins make this a very balanced, but powerful grenache.
