2003 Hardys Shiraz Bankside

South Australia more

11/24/2007 - somadoc wrote: NR

For over 150 years, Hardys has been crafting some of Australia's best-known and most popular wines. This rich red shows typical Shiraz characteristics of intense black fruit, mint, vanilla, and pepper aromas. It's dry with generous fruit flavours, excellent structure and balance. Great with a warming bowl of chili con carne.

Loved it. Very light and fruity but nicely balanced for such a young wine. Was able to cut through a tomato based pasta dinner though!

I must have got lucky as this was a stunning bottle of 50 year old wine. Incredible overpowering nose as it opened up over Thanksgiving Dinner. Still had some dark fruit undertones and that wonderful old wine feel and taste. Fabulous.

A great Pinot for game birds or flavourful meats, such as bison. It displays aromas of earth, cherry, beet, dried leaves and spice. It is dry with a taut structure and lively acidity. Medium-bodied, it displays a very good finish. (Vintages panel, May 2006)

Excellent everyday drinking wine for the price. Blackberry nose with hints of anise and pepper. The anise and pepper come out further on tasting. This wine is ready to drink now.

magnificent wine from the Cottini family, it is black/violet in colour with a bouquet bursting with cherry jam as well as smoky, tar elements. The palate is rich and plush with ripe fruit and velvety tannins leading to a delightfully long finish. A perfect end to a meal along with aged parmigiano reggiano and pears. I'm not able to rate this as, although we all loved it, it is SO powerful and such a high alcohol taste that I don't know what number to give it. The fruit is abundant but I had to concentrate hard to get passed the alcohol. My first time experiencing the "alcohol bomb", and it was a bomb. I hope time will mellow this so we can truly appreciate the wine underneath.

Although this 1998 vintage is reported to be past it's drinking date, this last bottle from our cellar was still excellent. Full fruit - blackberry, blueberry - and some tobacco. If you have any left, don't think that they are going to be duds, as ths was a very nice wine still on December 7, 2007.

Interesting night - we had the Cakebread Merlot first, which I was disappointed with, and then this cab, which I enjoyed more. Was that because it was nicer or because I already had half a bottle of wine in me :) This has a nice fruity nose with soft dark berries on the palate and a far nicer finish than its merlot cousin.
