11/23/2004 - JeffGMorris wrote: NRPresented to us as a gag gift from Steve & Barb. This wine is packaged as 4x250ml cans in a small box. The color was correct but that is where it ended. Truly horrid with a very unbalanced and harsh feel to it. Not rated. |

3/26/2005 - JeffGMorris wrote: 84 pointsDinner at Gervais & Vine in Columbia, SC. Clear with a tinge of straw to the color, this wine seemed to be in a Spatlese Trocken style. This had a very nice nose filled with peaches and grapefruit. Unfortunately the palate was too dry and acidic for it's own good with a short, shrill finish. Light bodied, this was drinkable but would have been better with a follow through of the nose onto the palate and finish. 50+11+9+7+7 = 84. |

1/10/2009 - JeffGMorris wrote: 94 pointsDinner at home with Mom & Steve & Barb. Decanted 3 hours. Very open, surprisingly so. Filled with tar, charcoal and black fruits. Clearly not French but not over the top in any way. A very pure expression of the Syrah grape that should be amazing if cellared for another 15-20 years. 50+13+13+9+9 = 94+ |

6/3/2006 - JeffGMorris wrote: 92 pointsDinner at Steve & Barb's house. Decanted for about 2 hours, but still showing very, very young. Dark, deep purple, the kind of wine that really stains the glass ( and teeth, and tongue, ... ) Dark fruits and lots of tannin in a very rich package. Clearly has a great future ahead of it, and was quite enjoyable now as well. 50+12+13+8.5+8.5 = 92 |

9/28/2007 - JeffGMorris wrote: 94 pointsDinner at St Jacques with Todd & Lisa, Wes & Terry Ann and Bill K. Now here's a real WOW! wine. Saturated purple in the glass belies the age of this beauty. Full bodied with strong notes of menthol and chestnut. Sweet oak is present, but not overpowering, on the long finish. Seems to be a well integrated wine but with a long life, and further development, ahead of it. My first Grange with any sense of age on it and I now see what all the fuss is about. A beautiful example of Aussie Shiraz walking the fine line between dense power and elegance. To me, few Shiraz can pull off this trick, but when they do this is what is special about the best Shiraz. 50+13+13+9+9 = 94 |

6/18/2008 - JeffGMorris wrote: 86 pointsDinner at Bill's house with Brian & Lauren. Purple in color. Very new world on the rich nose with a rather old world palate that was marred by some woody tannins. Seems to be losing it's fruit on the palate and finish. the nose here is clearly the highlight. 50+12+10+7+7 = 86 |

9/24/2001 - JeffGMorris wrote: NROn the nose, there were dark berries, black cherry, raspberry, a little vanilla and a touch of Rhone-like earthiness. The palate presented a sweet wall of fruit with a finish that revealed some oak spice and the earthy notes from the nose reappeared. Overall a very enjoyable wine. |

9/28/2004 - JeffGMorris wrote: 85 pointsPurple/violet in color, this medium bodied wine showed as a harmonious wine that is ready to drink with soft tannins. Blueberries predominate along with oak, black cherry, plum and leather. This is followed by a medium length finish. Should drink well for a few more years. 50+11+10+7+7 = 85. |

6/5/2014 - JeffGMorris Likes this wine: 95 pointsDinner at Bolt with Alan & Lehna. This very big wine has really hit it's stride and is a pointe right now. Despite the wine being somewhat oversized it strikes a terrific balance with aromas and flavors of dark berries, coffee & chocolate. Very glyceral on the palate and long on the finish. 50+14+13+9+9=95 |

Concentrated and massive with a very glyceral mouthfeel. A long finish closes out the experience. Still youthful with many years ahead of it. 50+13+12+8+8 = 91. |

9/14/2002 - JeffGMorris wrote: NR“This is Australian for Wine”. Amazingly Australian nose in all ways. Good rich fruit and a truly “big” Shiraz. Not shy with oak but not overpowering. Decanted for 5 hours, could have easily withstood more decanting and been even better. Huge wine. Massive in every way. |

4/13/2004 - JeffGMorris wrote: 89 pointsDark purple in color. Decanted 30 minutes. This wine was light bodied for a Burge, similar to a previous bottle, and a far cry from the '95 and '98. Cherries, plums and blueberries with a short finish. A good drink but not what Burge can be. Maybe the rest of the bottle will show better tomorrow with some breathing time. |

9/18/2004 - JeffGMorris wrote: 81 pointsDinner at Steve & Sue's house. Unfortunately this bottle agreed with my previous notes on the 2000. Nowhere near the depth of the '98 or the great '95. Not bad, but nowhere near what I expect from Burge. Good nose but then flat and lifeless on the palate and finish. 50+11+8+6+6 = 81. |

9/14/2002 - JeffGMorris wrote: NRDecanted 10 hrs. Just as good as a bottle last year in a showdown with '90 Rayas. Explosive wine. Has tremendous power matched with an elegance that few wines can equal. An interesting crescendo finish that built over 1-2 minutes. Long life ahead of this one, but decanting is essential on Burge wines. The first bottle of this that was opened was corked! The corked bottle broke our hearts but luckily we realized it in the morning and could decant another bottle. |

9/14/2001 - JeffGMorris wrote: NRDecanted for 3 hrs. Dark purple color. Aromas of sweet plum and chocolate. Incredible explosion of overripe dark fruit on the palate with blackberry and "koala-fiers" of eucalyptus. NO alcohol burn. At least 30 seconds of intense finish with lingering notes after 2.5 minutes. Minimal if any oak evident. Some bittersweet dark chocolate on the aftertaste. Held it's own next to the '90 Rayas. |

5/10/2003 - JeffGMorris wrote: NRI've always enjoyed the '99 version of this wine better than the 2000 and better than the oaked version ( Steading ) and this was no exception. I find Torbreck wines to ride the line very well between big sweet fruit and some restraint and earthiness and this was no exception. Worked very well with a Salmon with Soy Ginger Marinade. |

8/20/2001 - JeffGMorris wrote: NRI love Sparkling Shiraz with duck and this is my favorite bottling. Served at just above cellar temp in Riedel Shiraz glasses, I still find something amusing about seeing a deep purple , bubbly wine in a large glass. As usual the flavors on this wine are big, but somehow restrained in a way I find common in all Trevor Jones wines. Very brambly aromas and flavors mixed well with the duck. I know these wines tend to really divide tasters but I find them very appealing, particularly with duck and cheese. I think they really need food to show well, against traditional thinking. Have had this wine 4 times so far this year with 3 great showings and only 1 disappointment ( disappointment was in a tasting with no food at the time ). |
