2004 Thorn-Clarke Shiraz Shotfire (Ridge)Barossa more |
3/28/2009 - Hollowine wrote: 79 pointsI'd been curious to try this for a while, had seen a lot of buzz about the Shotfire and it was talked up pretty heavily by the retailer, but I'll be honest, I was pretty disappointed. I didn't give this a decant, which would have likely helped the initial impression which was dominated by a palate of Cherry, but not the tasty Black cherry, this was Ludens cough drops or cherry flavored codine cough syrup from when I was a kid. The nose had some classic Shiraz elements on first night, but went very one dimensional on night two, as did the palate that gave up the cough syrup for a very acid forward palate with only minimal red fruit. Maybe a bad bottle, but I just simply didn't see the buzz this one garners. 50+5+10+8+6 = 79 |

5/12/2009 - Hollowine wrote: 83 pointsDark Ruby, needed a bit of air to calm down, initial palate and nose was much like others have said with over extraction. On a couple hours air, nose of red and black fruits, bit of spice and pepper. Palate is still very bright red fruits, hint of oak on the finish. Pretty easy drinking, though my tastes are starting to trend away from this style. Balanced, hold remaining bottle until 2011 50+5+9+12+7=83 |

9/22/2012 - Hollowine wrote: 90 pointsWasn't sure what to expect with this on given prior notes, opened it for Int'l Grenache Day. Wow, what a great place this bottle is in. Nose and Palate are nearly an identical match on sensory impressions; deep, black-raspberry fruits, hint of tar, sage, steel. Probably catching this at the back end of its drinking window, but this bottle was in no way past prime. Throwing a lot of sediment so stand up a couple hours prior to drinking. 50+5+11+16+8 |

11/10/2010 - Hollowine wrote: 92 pointsBought 4-5 of these on release at the recommendation of WineExchange, and totally agree with the prior note, this has been a consistent performer and a great wine throughout it's life. Down to two, opened one this evening while making Risotto. Color is a clear garnet, quite beautiful with no clouding or sediment, bit of bricking on the edges. Nose of vanilla (but not the over oaked type), mint, cinnamon, black cherry. Palate has been fun over 2 hours, at first bright fruits with a bit of sandlewood, mocha...now moving into lots of bright cherry wrapped in a cedar blanket. For an "off vintage" Mt. Langi Ghiran really showed their stuff on this release, a real shame they discontinued it after a few vintages. |

6/28/2010 - Hollowine wrote: NRPop and pour. BAM, nose full of scorched earth, blackberries, wet leaves. The palate is very nicely balanced, definitely an Aussie Shiraz, but the fruit isn't too jammy. Plenty of Boysenberry, coffee, hint of burnt toast on the back palate. Finish isn't long but it is pleasant and I find myself reaching for the glass over and over. Nice quaff for the price, integrating nicely, will try to consume my next two over the next 3-5 years. |

9/27/2020 - Hollowine wrote: 94 pointsWasn't prepared to like this, prior bottle earlier this year was a bit "off" but this bottle was flat out gorgeous, especially with 24 hours of Slow-o. On day 2 the nose just blossoms into beautiful florals, think Grange but not quite on that mark. Lovely, soft palate of red and black fruits. Really wish I'd let the whole bottle sit open a day. |

1/2/2009 - Hollowine wrote: 91 pointsDecanted for 3.5 hours prior to serving. On initial opening, was concerned this was going to be an over-oaked fruit bomb based on the initial whiff, but it was nothing of the sort. Dark purple/garnet, aromas of dark cherries, red fruits, cigar box, leather. On the palate, hardly the stereotyped "Fruit Bomb", the fruit, acid and tannins all very much in check - cherries, cranberries, spice - feel this has a lot of potential to improve and age, so glad I have several more, try another in 18 months or so. 50+5+11+16+9 |

10/3/2009 - Hollowine wrote: 88 pointsReally a very pleasing experience, and one which reminds me of why I enjoy this hobby so. Wasn't sure what to expect as I'd never drank a wine from this producer and had pretty much lost this bottle in the cellar for nearly 10 years. Dark ruby solid to the rim, a bit of Brett initially, but blew off and the oaky vanillin gave way to solid red fruits as the evening went on. Vanillin, cedar, eucalyptus, mocha, red fruits throughout the palate, very balanced with a great finish. I can't put it down, I want to drink it all tonight, but probably won't. A very enjoyable bottle, won't speculate on aging as I had the only CT Bottle at time of drinking, but I would not hesitate to pop this open and drink at this stage. 50+5+10+14+9=87 |

12/24/2009 - Hollowine wrote: 92 pointsOpened and poured, no decant; color is deep purple-garnet. Bit of a hot nose, past the alcohol is some nuances of boysenberry, tiny bit of vanilla from the oak, hints of something vegetal that I'm too tired from days of Christmas preparation sleep deprivation to care about. Palate is pretty full of black and red fruits, hint of tar on the finish, some cigar box and campfire smoke. Tannins are still firm but softening, I think this is starting to integrate but has many years left ahead. Went well with pizza, probably stick to drinking this with food for the time being. |

6/30/2008 - Hollowine wrote: 89 pointsDid a pop and pour on this one, enjoyed with seared steak and carmelized onions. Not real proficient identifying scents, but initial nose was quite jammy, reminded me of a lot of Walla Walla Syrahs. Initial tastes were a bit disjointed, the oak seemed a bit overpowering but nice acidity and fruit in the background. After 1/2 hour air, and eating with dinner, tamed down a bit and was very tasty. On second day, this is a very tasty wine, you can taste the fruit concentration from the rack drying of the berries, and the oak melted in to a back shadow of the Black Cherry and Cocoa flavors. Nice nose of Raspberry and Pencil box tonight, certainly warrants a bit of bottle age to better integrate the oak. |

Nose was a funky Bretty-Barnyardy-rubbery mix that simply worked, had my head in this glass over and over. On the palate, I was having trouble placing the berries, and it had a slightly bitter finish, but not in a bad way. Couldn't place it; not raspberries, not tar...finally stumbled on TazoBerry Tea. That's what this screamed to me, that berry tea flavor up front, with the bit of black tea on the finish. I really liked this wine, have several more that I will open 2-3 year window. |

7/28/2009 - Hollowine wrote: 87 pointsI wasn't sure what to expect with this bottle, mostly due to the somewhat tattoo-esque label and the expectation that it would be another over extracted Aussie Shiraz. I'm pleasantly wrong in any regard. Popped and poured, this deep purple colored wine had a very nice nose with hints of the Cabernet (Pencil Lead, cedar) poking through the Shiraz Red and Black fruits. The palate was well balanced, lots of fruits but complimented with a sweet vanillin quality that made this very easy drinking. Very good on night one, even better for the 2nd half of the bottle on night two. 50+5+11+13+8=87 |

Tannins pretty much calm, but alcohol still a bit high, probably time to drink up as expect fruit will fade against the alcohol in coming years. |
