I know this is a lower end bottle but I was shocked by the ratings this has received. It was very deep in color and a decent nose. The first sip told the entire story. I thought there was soap residue still in my glass so I dumped, washed the glass, and repoured. Once again I had high hopes because the wine did had a big bold appearance and seemed as though there was a thick, powerful wine hiding behind the soap taste. I was wrong the wine just has an awful bite, and a bitter soap taste the hits you right away. I much prefer Mitolo GAM, Shirvington, Stonehorse, or Quarterback to this any day. |

5/17/2010 - jaxpaj wrote: 93 pointsExtremely concentrated and powerful. Candied dates, creme brulee topping (burnt sugar), hints of caramel and nut. Excessive heat on the nose, expected it to fade over the week I had it but it never did. This is the first port I have ever had that 1 glass was enough. Enjoyed it thoroughly. |

1/9/2012 - jaxpaj wrote: 93 pointsThis has opened and is now ready to drink. Last year this was very tight and the tannins were very strong, holding back the wine and keeping you from tasting everything you know is there. Very dark, purple/black, dark fruit, groomed earth, with touches of vanilla and chocolate. |

4/13/2010 - jaxpaj wrote: 90 pointsAgree with some of the other tasting notes, at $35 worth the adventure but a rip off in the $60 range. Not a traditional Aussie Shiraz. Lighter, both in body and color, and sweeter than I expected. Fruit and cotton candy jump out at you. It was a bit of a surprise to me that there were no oak, leather, or spice tones. Smooth with a nice finish. |

4/18/2011 - jaxpaj wrote: 94 pointsA very nice wine just missing that something special which kept it out of higher 90s. Very dark, fruit forward wine with tones of raw vanilla and velvety tannins that keep the aftertaste lasting a good minute. Lacked complexity and very dirty wine (left a good inch of wine in the bottle yet my last glass was a train wreck, tons of sediment left in the glass). |

8/30/2011 - jaxpaj wrote: 93 pointsThick and maybe a touch flabby. The tannins hit you a full 10-15 seconds late. Super dark, thick dark fruit, fig, liquid smoke, with a touch of oak. It wouldn't be a stretch to guess that this is an experimental blend with 10-15% port. Overall a very nice wine that pushes the envelope. Once paired with bold foods the wine evolves into a perfect complement. If there was ever a wine to build a dinner menu around, this is it! |

2/23/2009 - jaxpaj wrote: 86 pointsHad a nice nose and is full bodied. Hits you with a harsh bite right away but mellows. Tried with ribs and Thai and the match wasn't there. It worked very well with Chocolate. For the price I will not buy again, there are much better for less. |

2/23/2009 - jaxpaj wrote: 85 pointsI was reminded of what a good aussie wine is. I have been on a very good run with aussie wines and this is the first in months that I wasn't fully satisfied with. It felt like this was a rookies first run at producing a high end wine from quality grapes. It just didn't come together. It took me a few days to finish off the bottle. A bit harsh and lack of depth. |

9/20/2010 - jaxpaj wrote: 93 pointsA very dark and intense wine. Do not start the night with this bottle. Heavy on the dark fruit, with a hint of sweet tar. The wine will overpower you unless you pair it with the appropriate foods. Make sure you have a glass of water around also. Might be a little low on the 93 but have several more bottles and expect the score to go up now since I've learned a little about the wine. |

1/31/2011 - jaxpaj wrote: 89 pointsI can see how this wine could be a "go to" wine for some. The quality is there just not the flavors I look for in a cab. Flavors of unripe fruit, graphite and earth take the wine over. These flavors tone down when you pair it with a steak, but I wouldn't like this without food. |

10/26/2010 - jaxpaj wrote: 89 pointsPast notes have hinted at what I am tasting but it is far from traditional. Intense, a bit flabby, cherry pie with spice and a hint of oak hits you in the throat. Deep dark purple (blackish). Dusty/chalky finish. Somewhere in the $35 range. |

6/17/2011 - jaxpaj wrote: 93 pointsA wonderful big bold Aussie Shiraz. The dark fruit is there but it doesn't overwhelm the wine, touches of mineral, earth, and liquid smoke, help complete the wine. This is one of the more complex Shirazes I have ever tasted. A tinge of bitterness was present initially but once paired with food it all came together. A wonderful example of what I look for in an Aussie Shiraz. |

3/22/2010 - jaxpaj wrote: 90 pointsA nice DIRTY wine. Shirvington wines have 10x more sediment than any other wine I have ever had. If you have a cheese cloth or a strainer for your decanter use it. Once you get over the cloudiness of the wine it is terrific. Dark purple and full bodied. If you can find this in the $30's GET IT. This continues to be one of the best QPR I have found. Reminded me of Conn Valley Reserve. |
