2021 Carlisle Zinfandel Montafi RanchRussian River Valley more |
4/1/2023 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 100 pointsPerfection is an intimidating concept for both the winery and consumer. In this case it is transcendental. Otherworldly. Goddess. Unfortunately, too small of a production. At a measly 220 cases, there are only so many produced. Yet, when you get to experience a Zinfandel of this ilk - of this caliber - your life has become that much more enhanced. Eucalyptus, blueberries, tea leaf, bay leaf, cherries, tangelo and anise. I could inhale this for hours on end. The palate has the most astonishing fruit, with layers unfolding, and this massively balanced acidity. The texture reminds me of a ripe vintage, young Barolo. The finish echoes along and goes on forever. Better on day two, this absolutely deserves some time in the cellar. I would be shocked if another Zinfandel of this echelon is ever achieved again. Montafi was the first Carlisle that I ever had back in early 2008. It was an ‘05 Tom Feeney (Montafi) and it opened this new world of Zinfandel for my younger palate. The 2021 is beyond that lovely bottle. This just raised the bar. It is not as audacious as the stunning ‘19, but definitely more refined and epic. Drink 2025 - 2037. 11 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

7/17/2009 - gr8r84u wrote: 100 pointsWhats wrong with you guys... afraid to give this what it deserves because it's a Zinfandel? Pure unadulterated enjoyment puts this one well into the 90's but I can't think of anything wrong with it... so why not 100? It's as much a 100 as any of the 100 pointers I spent 20 times as much on. More so in fact because I didn't have to think twice about drinking it or storing it for 15 years. Not going to say this has the most balance or any b.s. about the mid palate or what color fruit I can taste because I don't think it matters. It's just plain flat out delicious! I love it love it love it love it love it love it love it! ATTENTION ALL ZINFANDEL PRODUCERS... PAY ATTENTION... THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE ZINFANDEL! |

4/1/2018 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 99 pointsBlueberry cobbler, braised duck, portabello mushroom, vanilla bean, blackberry capote and Chinese five spice. The palate is salient during the front, middle and back; the tannins are microfiber, and the ostensibly echoing finish continues for minutes. Typical of Russian River Valley Syrah, the acidity is evident, and in this case, at the perfect amount. Many levels of depth are within. This soon-to-be legendary bottling is even more enthralling than ‘14 and ‘11. Absolutely iconic and my favorite Carlisle yet. This is near perfection. 2016 might possibly end up being Carlisle’s best vintage ever. Drink 2019 - 2033. 11 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (3) |

10/22/2016 - raydawgone Likes this wine: 99 pointsNose of fresh wild flowers, pipe smoke and herbs. Silky, red fruit, ultra fine tannins leading to peppery spice on long, lingering finish. Complex layers, with near-perfection balance of fruit, tannin and acidity! Through all the years of consuming Carlisle (10+), this bottle truly stands out heads & shoulders above all others! |

4/12/2021 - purely Likes this wine: 98 points11/20 RELEASE The nose is bright, sticky and spice kissed with polished notes of wet stone, smoked meat, and spruce. The palate entry is silky, solid black fruit with supple tobacco and spice. A beautiful structure of persistent grilled meat and violet. Drink 2021 - 2030. |

2018 Carlisle Syrah Sierra Mar Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlandsmore |
4/10/2020 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 98 pointsOver time this bottling has become one of my favorites in the Carlisle portfolio. Decanted for two hours. Blueberry, raw steak, bacon fat, flower shop, dried shallots and gravel pit. Full-bodied, and paradoxically light on its feet, this delivers during every phase of your palate. At the very end this is thick and almost decadent. My favorite ever from here. Decant or wait a couple of years. This must be one of the finest Syrahs to ever come from Santa Lucia Highlands. Drink 2022 - 2034. 3 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

4/2/2023 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 98 pointsDecanted for two hours. Infanticide, this deserves more time in the cellar. Blueberries, salumi, lilacs, white pepper, violets and plumeria. Exceptionally long and vibrant, this is somewhat shutdown and has the silkiest of tannins. A glorious, textured middle. The body is full, but this imbues elegance. There’s a wonderful aftertaste of berries and meatiness. More Cornas-like than previous vintages. ‘16 is still my favorite, but this is quite close. Drink 2027 - 2040. |

2021 Carlisle Zinfandel Mancini RanchRussian River Valley more |
4/1/2023 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 98 pointsConsumed over two days. Loaded with power and finesse, the middle palate is round and very layered. This stretches along with this amazing finish. Such a fine, quenching acidity. A cornucopia of berries, with Indian spice, blood orange and red licorice. This remains fresh. Medium to full-bodied. Remarkable and without seeming generic, this is the best Mancini yet. Better than the epic ‘19. With all the stuffing and form to live long. The purity of fruit and sense of place really draw you in. Drink now - 2033. 6 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

Lots of fruit salad perfume and very sleek on the palate with some chalky minerals before cooling to the crisp 49’F out here. Drinking the other one this year. 2 people found this helpful, do you? 5/29/2021 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 98 pointsOpened for three hours. Bramble berries, root beer, pomegranate, stone, char siu and freesia. The most amazing middle palate exists, with gossamer tannins and so much percolation. The finish goes on forever. The body is medium to almost full, and all through there’s a fine agility. This is the finest Zinfandel yet from Carlisle, with all thing’s magnetic about the Carlisle vineyard. Legendary. I picture this being a massive crowd pleaser seven years from now, as an exemplary example of Zinfandel. Drink 2023 - 2035. |

7/16/2009 - mebydef wrote: 98 pointsThis rocked. It's got so much intensity and density. It's like a stone wall of wine. Wow! There is so much here. The color is opaque and purple. The nose has smokey river rocks, meat, and dark berries along with sandalwood, hard herbs, and flowers, beautiful violet flowers. The wine is vibrant and very much alive. The tannins are substantial but ripe. By the third day, things had really softened, fleshed out, and come together. Glad I have more. |

5/8/2020 - dsimmons Likes this wine: 98 pointsWOW!! Drank this with ribs. This was one of the best Syrah's I have ever drank, and I have drank a lot of Syrah. Concentrated Dark fruit and licorice flavors with some earthy overtones. Balanced and elegant. Lingering finish. I just love it when wine evolves to this level of elegance and seamless integration and concentration of flavors. If you still have these you are in for a treat. 3 people found this helpful, do you? 3/16/2013 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 98 pointsI am astonished by this pure form of Syrah. Truly an effervescently enamored colour of violet and garnet, with a sanguine and purpling rim. The purity and length are immeasurable, with the most seamless structure ever from this hardly superfluous vineyard. Magnetic on the nose, exemplifying Blueberry cobbler, thyme, cedar, sweet 'n' sour sauce, sun-drenched earth and soy sauce. Layers and layers of structured fruit, showing a long finish of forest floor qualities. The mid palate shows the strength and inveterately chiseled qualities of marble. Truly classic in every sense of the word. Drink 2015 - 2027. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

3/31/2018 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 97 pointsTasted at the winery, this is without a doubt the most sublime young Sierra Mar yet. Opaque and concentrated, the palate is of pure cashmere, with the tannin structure quite evident. On the nose, I get a lot of blueberry, elderberry, sea breeze, herbs de province and rock quarry. The finish is exceptionally long and although this is rather enjoyable now, the cellar is insisting that this liquid ambrosia spends a few years slumbering. Drink 2021 - 2036. |

4/3/2022 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 97 pointsTasted at the winery. This was freshly opened and a pure joy to taste. Another wonderful 2020. I typically find Carlisle vineyard to be the prettiest of the Russian River Valley Zinfandels by Carlisle, and this is no exception. Ripe raspberries, freesias, granite, white tea, blackberries, orange rind and a little nutmeg. The middle palate is round and full, along with the back end as well. There’s a little silky tannins. The finish sails on and the concentration is addicting. Wait a couple of years, even though this was very enjoyable. Drink 2024 - 2036. |
