Bordeaux 2009 Grand Cru / 10-years on / tasted blind: Expressive nose of forest flor, glue fruit, licorice, blackberry. This has layer after layer, always different when I come back. Impressive palate, ripe yet fresh, structured yet polished. A dream Bordeaux. My favorite and also WOTN #1 of the tasting. Kudos team Leoville Poyferre 2009.

66x Parker 100-Pointers from Bordeaux 1947-2010 tasted blind (Switzerland): Tasted blind. Dark purple. Right of the bat this wine impresses with a fantastic nose of dark fruit, toast, chocolate, spices. Full bodied, tannic, young. Great mid-mouth feel and long finish. This is really awesome, lush with aromatic depth. I was surprised when Robert Parker gave this 100 pts but now I can see why. A fantastic showing today. Keen to see if this wine can repeat this performance in ten years time. Group score: 18.61, group rank: 13/64

Purple edge with black core. An extravagant nose of blackcurrant jam, black cherries, cigar box, roasted notes and a hint of licorice. Well balanced. Ripe fruit. Loads of unobtrusive tannin and acid. Beautiful. Accessed via Coravin one year after initial sampling.

Opaque purple color turning dark ruby at the rim. The whiffs from the glass appear blunt, but slowly evolves to brooding dark fruit, incense, menthol and iodine. The palate reveals a full, dense body loaded with blackberry, creme de cassis, graphite and espresso followed by a texture laden by tannins that have substantially mellowed by its tenth year since harvest. There’s still a bit of tightness that makes it perfectly sumptuous at this stage, then releases a long, silky finish with hints of pencil lead. This by far has been the best I’ve tasted from the Château. Drink now with a 15-minute decant until 2034.

My second contribution of the night and my final bottle unfortunately but boy did this deliver!

Served it blind and with a few hints @Alastair got it right! @Riaan was very close with Las Cases.

For me this showed like a great Chateau Margaux at times. Very ripe but all in balance, very long, minty and super silky. Everything was absolutely spellbinding but also made you want more! Ok, not a 1916 Latour like @Alastair had last week but for me perfect.

Now - 2035+

💯

Bordeaux 1990 - 20 years later (Martins office): Dark red color still with a reddish hue. Intense aromas of pure, elegant blackcurrant fruit and ripe cherries tightly packed together in multiple layers. Similar feel of purity and elegance on the palate where the juicy, primary fruit continues to dominate – even after 20 years! The fruit broadens out on the mid palate and finish with layers of licorice, cigar box, truffle oil and a touch of graphite. The balance is impeccable, but the most amazing thing is the lift you feel in this wine, while it is full-throttle primary fruit there is a surreal lightness that makes it seem to evaporate in the mouth while the finish lingers on forever. Super intense and extremely delicious. Extraordinary.

Very shy upon opening, but after 4 hours this was absolutely singing. Massive complexity on the nose - cigar ash, forest floor, earth, cassis, cherry, tobacco, and pencil. Really, an intoxicating nose. The palate seals the deal with the same complexity and wonderful presentation of fruit. Sorted tannin and the finish is sheer velvet with a good 60 second finish. When 90 Poyferre is on it absolutely rocks my world and I am going to score it appropriately. 99 Pts

Utterly transcendent at 101 years young. Dried cranberries, lovely cedar, cherry mash bordering on the slightest, welcome sour. Tertiary earth notes and glances of umami. Superbly elegant mouthfeel, with nary hints of tannin (still!), the finish persists for 45+ seconds. A once in a lifetime selection found at Bern's Steakhouse in Tampa, FL. An emotional wine indeed.

mature brick red, yet dark centre with lighter rim; eucalyptus candy, minty nose with a pleasant spicy, almost biting touch on the palate, lacking its former fruit slightly; still wonderfully powerful, impressive length, very elegant; another 100p for the pure privilege, what a flight!!

I have to respectively disagree with prior tasting notes. This wine was phenomenal! After the bottle was opened, I smelled the cork and I just knew it was going to be great. The first whiff of the wine from the glass took my breath away. So much black and red fruit, violets and floral notes, with a ton of complexity. It was absolutely incredible. With that nose, I didn't decant, and the wine rewarded we with evolution for hours. It just had everything in the nose. Cigar, oak, flowers, black cherry, dark blackberry fruit, a tiny bit of brett, forest floor, some green tobacco, a little pencil lead, and some St. Julien stink. Honestly, the nose on this wine read like a 100 point Robert Parker note. This wine changed my view on 1995 which I thought was over-rated. I recently had the 1995 Margaux, Latour, Haut Brion, Ducru Beaucaillou, Leoville Barton, Cos d'Estournel, and a few others in the past few months. This wine was way out of their league, with only the Ducru coming remotely close. Perhaps the other wines need time and will one day come around to something like this wine. Let's hope.

The palate was quite good but there is clear room for improvement. The wine is still quite young and I expect significant more development. While smooth and rich, the palate needs more time to develop a sexy long finish. At that point, this will be a 100 point wine, if not 105 points. The nose and palate are dominated by the fruit still, although with such complexity. I cannot believe this wine can be found for $100. Like many other recent experiences, I'm not sure $500 or $1000 wines can get better than this!

Simply amazing. Loads of freshness and tons of complexity. Wine seems to have lots of life left. Every sip gets better. Please give an hour to decant if you can. I believe this wine and vintage highly under appreciated. Glad I have five left! This wine outperforms the higher rated Leoville Las Cases of the same vintage IMHO.

What a beautiful wine! My first of these and I must say that I was wowed. Definitely decant this beauty because it takes a couple of hours to really begin strutting its stuff. when I first poured this wine I was a little concerned because of the slight brownish tint to the wine. I can't really see it in the glass now. Can a wine change color after a decant??? Anyway, the nose is sweet and full of fruit and spice, floral, licorice, bright fruit, black cherry, nutty, vanilla, and sweet earth. One of the most pleasant, intoxicating and complex bouquets of any wine I have ever had. On the palate the wine is simply delightful with depths of complexity and perfect balance. A fruit and spice medley, it just goes down so smoothly. Light spice, blackberry, graphite and other delightful flavors that I can't find words to describe. This is what it is all about!!!

Wow, if this doesnt knock your socks off I dont know what would. Bam! It snaps your attention to it!

Big, plush and elegant with decadent yet beautifully intense flavors, very fresh and exiciting. Just all around amazing. It is definitely Leoville Poyferre but at its most vivacious quality. Deep plum, dark cherry, chocolate, leather, smoke, tobacco, forest earth, lip smakin' tannins and very long and dramatic finish.

Leoville Poyferre 2018, April 16 and 17, 2021

Leoville Poyferre 2018, like many of the great 2018’s, is mind blowingly good. What makes this vintage so mind blowing? The 2018’s are rich, smoky and voluptuous, with maximum enjoyment, while at the same time very fresh and exciting to drink. Smooth and buttery tannins, sometimes cashmere like. Upon reflection, these wines display multi-dimensional and at times kaleidoscopic delineations of beautiful flavors that are pure pleasure.

That is the Leoville Poyferre 2018. It has the distinctive character of Leoville Poyferre amplified to hedonistic levels. And with age I imagine the finely delineated flavor dimensions we can discern when it’s young will meld into a truly gorgeous harmony.

I am a big fan of Leoville Poyferre, and some of the years that stand out to me are 2000 (classic), 2003 (hedonistic), 2009 (a jewel), 2016 (fresh and beautiful). The 2018 may be the best one so far. And the price is quite reasonable for the quality.

For 2018, in addition to Leoville Poyferre, the other knockout 2018s I have tried include Pontet Canet, Smith Haute Lafitte, Cos D’Estournel and Canon. All mind blowingly good in their own ways but Leoville Poyferre is the most voluptuous, lip-smacking delicious wine of that esteemed group.

2018’s are drinking great right now, no need to wait but I would love to be able to taste them 20 years from now. That’s what I think it will take for these to hit another level.

Open last night. Very strong medium ruby color. Satiny. Nose on this has lovely lead pencil and anise. Hints of blueberry as well. Very harmonious. Really lovely to smell. Feminine. Just gorgeous in the mouth, with layers and layers of fruit coming in waves. Lovely blackberries in the extended finish. This is one of the most wonderful older bottles bordeaux I have had in quite some time, and it is in a perfect place right now. Big and rich but silky smooth with tannins completely resolved. Simply stunning. 5-14-20-10: 99/100.
