Unripe and unsweetened strawberry compote with some oregano on the nose. Chewy, grainy and some tomato, dill, chocolate and unripe strawberry on the palate, dry, somewhat extracted, 89 - 90. |

9/20/2014 - Soteriologist wrote: 88 pointsI had to repost this TN because this rating of 88 seems very tentative. According to the comment by Wine-Strategies, we would have to assume that this vintage here would be ready in 2030 maybe. I assume that could be true since it was apparetly made from 120 year old vines. But it somewhat collides with the statement by the vintner himself that it has only 10 years in the cellar. A possible solution could be (and I write this as a reminder to myself) to compromise: open the bottle around 2019 and give it brutal 2-4 hour decanting. If and when I will do that with my other bottle of this, and if I still have access to this site, I will rewrite this note. |

After we'd ordered (and consumed) some Chinon from '81, Gattinara from '69 and Petite Sirah from '74, all of which were quite good, I ordered this. I thought there was a fair chance it could be on the downhill slide, but an equally fair chance it was ready to go. However, t it wasn't even ready yet. Maybe in 5 years, or now, with a 2 hour decant. Much more tannic than I was expecting. Great acids, but the fruit was in a deep, deep sleep. Good now, with the potential to be very good. Especially so at just $55 on the list. |
