3/17/2020 - WildeMeeuw Likes this wine: 100 points Kleur: Diep, bijna ondoordringbaar, donkerrood. Aroma / bouquet: Stoer en donker bouquet. Donker fruit, aardse tonen, een vleugje leer. Deze wijn toont zich in alles een potentiele krachtpatser die pas in de toekomst zijn potentieel zal laten zien. Smaak / Afdronk: Veel van alles, jong, vitaal en krachtig. En toch al ongelofelijk harmonieus en verdomd lekker. Gepronunceerde zuurgraad. Mooie gerijpte tannines die de wijn in dit stadium nog een prominent maar aangenaam bittertje bezorgen. Retronasale, stoere smaakindrukken waarin donker fruit, leer en aardse tonen domineren. Zeer harmonieus, zelfs in dit stadium. Superlange afdronk. Algemeen / potentieel: Nu 11 jaar oud. Overduidelijk nog een extreem lange drinkbaarheidshorizon. Maar toch al ongelofelijk lekker, zacht en harmonieus. En met een zeer serieus ontwikkelingspotentieel. Valt er op deze wijn nog wat af te dingen? Of volg ik Robert Parker met zijn oordeel dat het hier een volmaakte wijn betreft. I generally really like this producer - I love the black fruit, the dryness on the finish, the camphor, pencil lead and creme-de cassis; all of this was there, and in spades. There was beautiful weight and decadence, showing the quality of the vintage, and even a bit of acidity. This was so complete in every way. I just love the style here and would never get tired of it. Only reason I didn't give it 100pts is that maybe it's missing some x-factor or goosebumps, but damn, what an extraordinary wine. I may need to seek out more of this, despite the expense. 99+pts. |

The finish seals the deal as the wine has real staying power, staying with you for over 50 seconds! Harvesting took place from September 5 - September 30. Yields were low at 28 hectoliters per hectare. The wine is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, and is aging in 60% New, French oak barrels for 18 months. 14.5% ABV. pH 3.55. Is this the best vintage of Smith Haut Lafitte ever produced? Maybe. Let's revisit when the wine is in the bottle. Drink from 2027-2055. 98-100 Pts. |

The bouquet reveals blueberry sandalwood blackberry gravel and floral notes. Some aged aromas emerging. The palate is more black plum and gravel. The structure is firm with good acid and mouth coating tannin. It has the elegance of St Julien floral notes from Margaux but its roots are the plum and gravel of Graves. It is feminine and introverted and contrasts with its exuberant stable mate Haut Brion. Riedel Bordeaux glasses. Best after 30 minutes in decanter. 16 deg C. Best 2025 to 2060. |

Robes the glass when swirled and then there is a cascade of fine legs down the sides. Deep and rich nose bursting with smoky plum, mulberry, black licorice, camphor, black currant, char, mineral and cedar. Very sultry and exotic! So rich, smooth and silky in the mouth. Still lots of tannins there but they are very fine and buried under all the rich fruit extract. This, incredibly, builds from front to back with the most flavour revealing itself on the finish after swallowing and the tannins have faded. The flavours and fruit extract are simply amazing! Ripe black fruits, stewed plums, black licorice, cedar, black tea, powdered minerals, Chambord liqueur and more. The finish is nicely framed between the acidity and the tannins. Still a baby, but an utterly beautiful one! Perfect balance. Effortless. Etherial. Elegant. After another hour, a kaleidoscopic array of beautiful flavors coat and roll off the tongue and down the throat where they stick. Silky rich texture but light on its feet. Really beautiful and much more depth, range and complexity than the very good 2005. Absolutely amazing, love it. |

High fill, good solid cork. Very full bodied. Impenetrable black nearly to the rim with a fine black cherry edge. First scents are rich black currant and melted black licorice. With air some tar, camphor, ink, white flowers and pencil lead. Unctuously coats the glass with high glycerine and leaves sensuous long slow legs. First sip: holy $h!t this is good! Great extract and rich feel. So full and round and sensuous! Gobs of flavour. Coats your mouth with black fruit compote - black currant, black berries, mullberries and perhaps a trace of black cherry. Great acidity, still lots of tannins there but they are buried deep under all the fruit. Long, long finish with waves of flavour replays. Carries the 14.5 % alcohol well. This is an OMFG wine! If I was to channel Charlie I would say: This is a high class escort of a wine in a slinky black dress that leaves nothing to the imagination, stilettos and a sultry French accent! Easy 99 points! Cheers! |
