The nose is all ripe plum, wood smoke, anise and sous bois. The flavors of blackberry, plum, coffee, mushroom and iron-rich soil are quite huge on the palate. At the same time these flavors are expansive, multi-layered and verging on the voluptuous. And the tannins are soft, sexy and perfectly poised to support a wine of this size and richness. The balance is superb! The wine is so delicious and instantly satisfying that it verges on the hedonistic. I have followed it since its release and can report that it is drinking at its peak. It also promises at least a dozen more years of great unbridled drinking pleasure. Tonight it is once again perfection in a glass.

When I was a young man I bought overpriced wines I could not afford. Now that I am older, I buy overpriced wines I can afford. In this case I got a bargain. This is the real deal and I'm ready for it. Duck breasts on the grill, Greek salad in the making. Sam Cooke. This wine is outstanding. A big swish and swirl and I get the full frontal effect. Don't bother to sort through the spices and fruit. This wine is art, just let it flow over you. Now I know what Charlemagne was fighting for. Nice. Very nice.

Perhaps the most regal expression of Granache (whilst not 100% grenache like the Chaupin) one can find in CDP is the 07 Janasse VV. Tasted blind alongside 13 other heavy hitters, it bested them all (including Mon Aieul, CSJ VV, RdB, VT, VD etc...). It has such a purity and pitch to its fruit, with such laser like focus, it is truly remarkable. My only hesitation is its boisterous, loud nature makes it virtually impossible to match with food. I'd prefer various other 100 point expressions of wine over this, but that is a stylistic preference, not a condemnation of its quality. Opened 12 hours prior to pouring and tasted alongside 13 other peers blind. I recommend a 12-16 hour opening at cellar temperature (no decant) for this wine at this juncture.

Sometimes I feel blessed. Blessed to be alive. Blessed to be well. Tonight I feel blessed I have one of the world's best wines in the glass. The 2009 Janasse Vieilles Vignes is as perfect tonight as last time I tasted it. There are no flaws at all, except a bit of youth. No heat, no residual sweetness, no disintegration. The wine is simply profound!

The nose expresses a cascade of deep mature fruit which is so pure you can almost feel the grapes. There is an abundance of sun warm heather, beautiful violets, subtle lilacs and a whiff of sweet licorice. The palate follows through with perfect and elegant integration between acidity and fruit. At the back-end of the palate some tannins are speaking up, but they just tell me this wine is in it for the long haul. There is no heat to be found and the balance is just amazing. The length on the finish just goes on and on and the wine "clings to the cheekbone" in a way that makes me sigh. I am utterly impressed by this effort.

So, why do I keep giving this wine a perfect score over and over again? I guess because that is the only thing I can do. When a wine has no flaws it means it is perfect to me. No matter how hard I try I cannot find anything that would reduce the score. Domaine de la Janasse produces some classy and good efforts, but the 2009 Vieilles Vignes is better than good!

This was tasted as part of an outstanding 2007 Rhone tasting that included the Mas de Boiuslazon Cuvee de Quet, Janasse Chaupin, Vieux Telegraphe, Ferrand and Beaucastel. All of these wines were truly delicious and outstanding but the Janasee VV was easily the best of the night and perhaps the best wine I have ever tasted (at least up there with a few truly great Burgundies and Bordeaux I have had). Why? It is so refined and beautiful, with truly intoxicating, deep rich and subtle flavors and aromas that left me spellbound. The tannins are so velvety smooth, there is not the hint of a sharp edge, so smooth that when compared to the other CDPs (which seemed voluptuous when I tasted them on their own - except the Quet which was also flawless) their tannins had a touch of roughness compared to the VV. It is also very pure and clean, like a gorgeous freshly bloomed purple flower in the sunlight. The clarity is one of the amazing things about this young wine. There is a smoky, alluringly spicy nose and endless layers of flavors of dark cherry, licorice, blueberry and a tiny hint of oak. It was perfection. Interestingly, my friend Rick who organized the event (thanks Rick!) had tasted the VV previously and was not impressed (no nose, flat flovors) but agreed with me that this bottle was the best of the night, so this wine can be very different on different occassions.

The wine is composed of 85% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and the rest Mourvedre and was aged 75% in tank and the rest in small barrels

Many say that these 2007 CDPs are too young to drink - I disagree and have been enjoying them very much in their youth as the pure, vibrant and racy fruit , silky tannns and beautiful structure are pure pleasure now. Will this improve with age? It may only be different, not necessarily better. Have one left to try in 4-5 years.

One of the most fantastic wines from this monumental vintage of Chateauneuf du Pape, and surely a great investment in a case or two for one's cellar. Incredibly smooth and focused, precise balance of flavor that builds to a spectacular finish that just goes on and on. Very deep purple color, magnificent aromas of blueberry, blackberry, lavender. This is one of those highly versatile wines that is perfectly drinkable now, yet will evolve and develop even more with the benefit of extended cellaring. Very unctuous, smooth, creamy and full-bodied. I brought a bottle to one of Las Vegas' Michelin-starred restaurants, and invited our highly knowledgeable sommelier to try some with us. He was clearly very impressed, so much so that he shared his glass with the chef, who gave us his compliments for an outstanding choice. This is one of those wines where I'd buy all that I could afford, they rarely get much better than this.

If this bottle is any indication, this magnificent wine is coming out of its dumb phase quite beautifully. A robust, peppery nose hints at a very deep, relentlessly earthy palate of chocolate, pepper, black cherry and notes of liquorice. I highly recommend at least a 2-to-3 hour decant, the flavors mellow and refine nicely after having been cooped up under the cork. This wine deserves every accolade it's received, from what remains one of the most stellar vintages in the southern Rhone in several generations. Highly recommended.

The epitome of a perfect wine? The 2009 Janasse Vieilles Vignes delivered a magical experience tonight. This wine is a true gem, a masterpiece so meticulously crafted it will shine like a diamond at any dinner table or in any wine tasting.

The nose reveals beautiful very pure dark fruit, morellos, subtle cedar wood, a lot of heavy spice and a gentle touch of garrigue. The palate is full-bodied with extremely integrated fruit, fine grained tannins, luxurious oak and subtle yet present acidity. There is no "residual sweetness" and the length on the finish just keeps going and going. At 15.5 percent alcohol there is not the slightest heat to be found. There is such balance in this effort, I get goosebumps. In the future, this effort will hopefully become even more integrated and expressive. Drinking it tonight might be close to infanticide.

What tipped this wine from my previous score of 98 to a pure 100 is the perfect balance, the lovely integration and the absolute purity. I simply see no flaws, other than the wine being too young to drink right now. But why should youth be allowed to be a "disadvantage"?

We tasted this effort with a 2009 Jaboulet Thalabert Crozes-Hermitage and a 2009 Santa Duc Prestige des Hautes Garrigues Gigondas. Both these wines are superb efforts too, but compared to the 2009 Janasse Vieilles Vignes after a couple of hours they felt simple, "oaky" and one-dimensional.

So, a 100 points it is.

This wine was so concentrated that it left a creamy feeling on my lips after sipping it! It, indeed, is the best Janasse Vieilles Vignes ever made and has most of the characteristics of the 2001, 2007, and 2009. To anyone considering buying this beauty or any CdP 2010... Take note that a domain producing such great wines almost every vintage will, very soon, FLASH on everybody's radar (not only Parker's fans'). I won't be surprised if, in some years, only a very few of us will be able to get any.

Absolute perfect! And first wine ever to score 100 points!

I have had this two times before and had no expectations, as I experienced it rather closed the last time.

After 4.5 hours of decant and chilled to 16-18 degrees (This is very important for this to top perform!!!), this came into a perfect state where everything came together. Extremely complex on the nose with truffle honey, violet flowers, strawberry, soft green herbes, redberries, blackberries, vanilla, leather, cedar and a faint hint of barnyard. The best part, you get everything on the palate where the layers of these beautiful notes are everchanging. It continues to change for 2-3 minutes in the aftertaste.

Be aware that decanting less than 4.5 hours shows too much of the tanins and if not chilled to 16-18 degrees, the wine drops to 93/94 points as the alcohol becomes too apparent...But hey...You just got the recipe to make this sing!!! Any deviation from this advise is simply your choice to ruin a perfect experience.

Enjoy...

A perfect score it is. At first sniff, this effort still leads to the cool efforts from Hermitage. Though the rich fruit and the overall complexity expose its true origin after a few minutes... To put it in a little more techincal phrasing, this effort reveals so much Syrah complexity I am just stunned. Despite being mostly Grenache, the expression of the Syrah component is just stunning. The first impression is abundance of white flowers and white pepper, but after a few minutes classical and luxurious dark fruit appears with perfect balance and elegance. The palate is totally clean, almost refreshing, shows an absolutely massive power, but it is also superbly kept together with a lot of promise for the future. Tannins are still harsh and expressive, yet soft and silky. This wine needs a good decant if served now. It is still very young... The finish just goes on and on, actually I can still remember the wine after several hours of finishing the bottle. I am totally blown away by the complexity shown tonight and I honestly still can only imagine what is to come. A tremendously good wine, which deserves all the merit it could ever get!

(Decanted for one hour.) So far I have gone through a case of this wonderful wine, and what a ride it has been! On this occasion I tasted it alongside the massive 2016 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes. Both are clearly outstanding wines, but in the end the 2010 comes out ahead. (For the time being, anyway.) Its perfumed nose is dominated by ripe strawberry and blackberry, garrigue, espresso, truffle and lapsang souchong tea. While full bodied and densely textured, it is remarkably light and nimble on the mid-palate with energetic flavors of strawberry and blackberry jam, ripe black plum, tapenade, Asian spices and mushroom. The ripe, fine-grained tannins perfectly frame the long, sweet and expanding finish. Showing growing complexity and nascent maturity, the wine is powerfully built, profoundly deep and breathtakingly long. Amazing!

First wine to me for a 100pts rating. This wine has everything. Tons of fruit, dazzling complexity, ripe as hell but with great acidity. On the nose there is red fruit, spices, meat and you cant stop smelling this beauty. It enters your pallet like a bulldozer. The acidity adds tension and makes this a complete wine thats will last many many years. Try to get this, while it's still affordable!

A total stunner - actually one of the better Chateauneufs ever produced according to my humble palate. At first sniff, this effort brings me back to the cool efforts of Hermitage. But of course the ample fruit and the overall complexity expose its true origin rather soon. The combination of mostly Grenache with some Syrah added to it, is so complex and adds so many layers to the nose, any wine aficionado will get goose bumps. There are white flowers, white pepper, after a few minutes classical and luxurious dark fruit appear. Adding these components are a perfect balance as well as elegance. The palate is so clean and shows an absolutely massive power. However it is also kept tightly together - which proper cellaring will change in due course. Tannins come across as rather soft and silky tonight. The young harsh tannins are history, while the primary fruit is not. This wine still needs a good decant if served now. The finish just goes on and on and lasts in my memory for several days. The complexity and the mix of cool impressions with elegant heated Grenache power is just thrilling. A wonderfully good wine, which still deserves all the merit it could ever get!

Inky black/purple color with an enormous nose of sage, menthol, hot tar, and black cherry. Mouth coating black fruits, anise, and meat drippings. Endlessly juicy finish…young perfection. Paired with Lindy and Grundy pork chops marinated in white wine and an assemble of sweet spices.
