This is an excellent zin. It stood up very well to Mexican food.

This wine really surprised me. It was fantastic. Nice earthiness, oak, very balanced and complex.

WOW!!
I brought to a ZAP function (along with Cloud 9 Seity and '05 Sauternes).
Big, great deep color, big 2.5% body, SMOOTH classic modern CA style,
great glycerin, bright fruit, extremely well integrated. long finish.
I wish I had more than just 1 bottle left.
Easily eclipsed a Rockpile offering from another maker (Hobo?) that someone brought.

Could be the best Zinfandel I've had. Compared to the straight Los Chamizal, the Rocky Terrace is more complex. Richer on the nose, more layered and rich on the palate. The regular bottling is the better QPR, but this one is the better of the two. This is my first exposure to Haywood. I really enjoy the style, which is a throwback to the way wine used to be made. Can't remember the last time I had a 14.5% Zin! Unlike some of the recent Zins I've had, there is no "too hot, too heavy, too much" in this wine. Nicely balanced in an elegant style.

It's been a few years since I've tried both this and the "normal" Los Chamizal bottling. True to form, the Rocky Terrace continues to outperform its sibling.

This continues to develop in an elegant way, and may have shed just a bit of fruit since the last time around in 2008. A gorgeous nose, pure Zin typicity with a nice hint of brambles rounding off the package. On the palate, it continues to be balanced, with some acidity to balance the fruit, and some lingering tannins (which could be a function of improper bottle prep - these just came from offsite and seem to be throwing some fine particles). Initially on opening is just a tad tight, making me wonder if I had overshot the drinking window. I don't think so, given the way it opened up over 15 minutes. That said, I wouldn't need to wait any longer on these bottles.

Update: I was a bit wrong about this, as it only gets better 8 hours later. Richer, more mellow. Any acidity and tannins, folded in. What does start to show through, with as much improvement as is evident, is a touch of heat on the backend. Just a touch, but knocks my late night score down a point to 93.

Beautiful berry notes leading to wonderful jam and fruit. Not over powering, but not weak at all. The perfect blend of both types of essence. Enjoy aromas of spice, blackberry with wild berries and pepper flavors.

Big fruit nose, smooth finish, taste of a much more expensive wine. Would buy again, especially with Bevmo's 5 cent deal!

92: I don't know if I have ever had such a smooth Zinfandel! Extra age has mellowed the tannins and left an amazing mix of flavors. This drank fantastic right out of the bottle. The aroma offers a hint of the terroir that rests just below the dominant fruit. Easy mouthfeel. Beautiful dark red-purple color with no hint of browning. Hard to believe that the CT "drink by" date was 4 years ago. If you still have a bottle, and you've been storing it well, give this a chance. And if you happen to stumble across a dusty bottle in a back shelf of a store somewhere, buy it!

Second bottle I've had this year and this zin is still providing tons of pleasure. Oldest zin I've ever had that's lasted this long. Lots of texture and a balanced and mature wine.

This is a beautiful zin. I had no idea a zin would last 8 years, but this wine is still strong and elegant and has the perfect amount of spice that a great zin offers. Right out of the bottle without decanting this wine is smooth and drinkable. I'd say there is one more year left on this wine, but I would drink now.

a really good zinfandel. Ruby in color that looked much younger. impeccably balanced wine with fruit, spicy pepper, oak and tannins coming together beautifully. this is one of those times when i wish i had the foresight to buy a whole bunch, but alas it was a one off.

Deep garnet color with ruby rim. A powerful nose of dark fruit, spice, & appreciable oak. Extraordinarily balanced on the palate. All the dark fruit [plums, blackberries, & cherries], creamy oak, brown spices, & vibrant acidity are all integrated very well; no single component is more pronounced than any other. Still drinking exceptionally well for a `97. [14.5% abv.; $15 (an absolute steal!)].

Deep intense almost inky color with aromas that remind me of berries and grilling. Berries on the palate with layers of berries, vanilla and some earthiness. A lush complex long finisher for a pleasing experience.

Big and plummy with vanilla, pipe tobacco, and musk. A touch hot, and a little volatile, but clean. The fruit isn't cooked or stewed. Enjoyable.
