9/16/2019 - mhbinn Likes this wine: 98 pointsThis is a “wow” wine! First tasted with Aaron Michaelis in Napa when I also picked up the 4 bottles I ordered (should have ordered more), and then 2 weeks later at a private tasting at my home. Decanted for 2 hrs prior, the Tench fruit really shines through, mouth-filling with very fine tannins and a smooth 30+ second finish. Held its own for wine of the night even with the 100 point ‘16 VHR! |

9/25/2020 - DrBad Likes this wine: 98 pointsFriday Night 2016 Oakville Cab Tasting: Jeb Dunnuck's notes and score are spot on for this wine. Tremendous structure, power and richness, this continued to grow over the night, never letting up all the way to the bottom of the bottle. Coravin glass poured through the aerator and aired for about 30 minutes. Started out with a bit more red fruit and acidity than the other wines and a little more tightly coiled. After about 30 minute the aromas picked up with notes of violets and blueberries then seaside salinity started emerging, always a sign to me that there will be some good minerality in the wine. The wine gained more minerality and structure, developing a full mouth explosion on the finish lasting a good 30 seconds. Opened the bottle and drank a little later with steak dinner of filet mignon, pureed broccoli and arugula. This balanced the food perfectly, taking on a slightly softer, fruitier feel with the food. WOTN and one of the top WOTYs for me. Great job TRB. 5 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (3) |

1/18/2024 - sfwinelover1 Likes this wine: 97 pointsSecond of 3, a couple of years + past the prior bottle. I really don’t have much to add to my prior TN—not that that will stop me from riffing—or CT friend Geaux’s more recent TN other than to say 1) this is now pretty much singing out of the bottle, but the super complex elements—see below—come into better balance and present with more elegance with about an hour of air, 2) this is even better than the prior bottle, and while I think it’s smack dab in the middle of its drinking window, it’s incrementally more likely to get a bit better than worse in the short term, although one way or another, it should have at least 5, and maybe 10, years of excellent drinking left, and 3) Geaux’s homage to Tench is dead on, and while all I’ve had from there is this and a couple of vintages of Russell’s, the combination of blue/black fruit, red fruit, green (forest floor, herbs, pyrazines) along with exotic spice is something to behold, almost exploding out of the glass. That said, the structure keeps this sexy, as opposed to the Maybach wines, of which I’m quite fond, which tip over into sluttiness, to whatever that concept makes sense and isn’t totally offensive. This and a couple of Hartwell Estate Reserves, which I bought at auction in all cases for under $70/btl, are my greatest qpr champs. But to be clear: they’re not just great values; they’re great wines. 96-97 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

8/15/2020 - TLR Likes this wine: 97 pointsPurchase on Berserker Day. Tried out my new Coravin. This is a really interesting wine that is not a crowd-pleaser. This is for wine nerdy and for all the right reasons. 12.8% alcohol built to last this is multi-dimensional with lots of herbal, soy, olive, and a dark brooding nature. great food wine Can't wait to revisit. Old world flavors in a new world wine. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

4/9/2023 - Geaux Tigers Likes this wine: 97 pointsPnP but really hit the peak after 30 min air. Unmistakably Tench! Into its drinking window with plenty of fruit, but rounded edges and hints of secondaries. Plenty of acid to go 5+ years. Viscous but not inky, blackish purple color, faint discoloration on the edges. Perfect wine for the back nine of the ‘23 Masters. 3 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

Purple n black crunchy fruits, excellent mineral structure, ferric, dense, crushed stones and red rocks. Balanced by Bright acidity and chewy tannins on a long finish. It’s young but with a good decant, it’s bangin! |

8/31/2021 - ewhite wrote: 96 pointsDecanted for about 4 hours - whoa. Deep impenetrable purple in color, with a deep intoxicating and perfumed nose of violets, dark cherries, subtle graphite, more dark sweet fruit, come on - the nose just goes on forever. Fine polished tannins, very rich and full, but with impeccable balance and finesse. Fine, long finish, with some menthol making an appearance. Outstanding. |

4/19/2021 - ffzhang Likes this wine: 96 pointsExploring 2018s and 2019s in Napa - Spring 2021; 4/18/2021-4/22/2021 (Napa Valley, CA): Beautiful aromas/flavors of bouquet garni, bay leaves, crushed gravel, vanilla, and creme de cassis. Fruit flavors of blueberry, blackberry, black plum, black cherry, and savory spices including clove. The wine was just a tad hot (14.8% alc), and tannins were grippy but not astringent. Lush texture on the palate with a slight sweetness (think Smarties candy) on the long finish. Really looking forward to picking up a few bottles of this when they release later this year. |

3/8/2020 - Ron Slye wrote: 96 pointsWow. This may be one of the best domestic syrahs, maybe any syrah, I have had. Still very inky black. Lots of roasted meat, ash, violets, and umami on the nose. This is the sort of wine that I could just sniff all night. Lovely tight taste in the mouth, with a sweet ashiness that segues into a nice long finish. This is a lovely wine at the moment. Note to self -- wait at least five years for the next one, and don't touch the 2012s at all! 4 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (3) |

6/11/2022 - Badmonkey wrote: 96 pointsThinking about buying more to lay down in light of Dunnuck’s 95+ rating but wanted to get an idea where it’s at first. I’m a big fan of what Bevan has done with this vineyard and curious how Thomas Rivers Brown compares - pretty darn good. Purple fruit - blackberry, currants, dark cherry, and some plum. Smooth mid-palate with a nice purity and solid depth/concentration. Nice rich flavors of dark berries, some spice/licorice, chocolate/cocoa, cassis, and a mineral/graphite component. Fairly long finish. Decanted for three hours and drank over a couple more. Improved a little with time but drinking well after the decant despite its youth. In my opinion, more or less in line with Dunnuck’s rating even at this youthful stage - 95/96. Although it is obviously very young and some improvement is expected with more time as it develops further. 100% cab. 8 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

Plush blackberries, red currants, spices and a very nice finish. I believe some bottle time (2-3 years) will bring out more earth and minerality but it will be hard to wait honestly. TRB and Tench couldn't go wrong together. I wonder if there are any similarities to his neighbor Screaming Eagle because if there is, then this is "bargain" and a gem! Solid 95-96 for now 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |
