1975 Bodegas Tradición Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Oloroso Anada

Palomino Fino more

The clarity here is unreal. So delicate and fresh despite its 36 year of age. An honor to taste. The ghost of flor is still here, and it has the super citric freshness that I love to find in old olorosos. Everything is so clearly delineated and precise, filled out, profound. I am flabbergasted and delighted by this wine, and can't wait to see if there's anything that could surpass it in my eyes.

Long, long positive oxidation, flor is still -amazingly- present as a ghost. Dried oranges, apricot, dusty, old wood. Very focused, not as broad as these old ones can be sometimes. Inner mouth perfume that is just like the Especial la Panesa, in fact identical, this Platonic ideal of a cool orange scent, crystalline and fresh. Jaw-dropping, near perfect wine.

I know that more experienced palates than mine don't consider this to be a particularly special esszencia, so I have to judge it on its own, rather than in comparison to others (it's the only one I've had). I found it to be one of the finest and most concentrated wines of my life, with flavors of apricot, spice, caramel, and autumn afternoon sunlight dappling through the trees. I'll never forget it.

Stains the glass. VIVID and very supple despite being powerful beyond belief. I agree with the poster below that this is more masculine while the regular VP is more feminine.

Unreal concentration, flavor of almond macaroons, herbs, chalk, sea spray, oranges. Quite complete, direct, and very savory. Really grips the palate and doesn't let go. Lives up to the hype around its release and is clearly a great classic.

Greatest sherry I've yet to try, so it deserves my highest score...the concentration is so high it the flavor almost pains the palate, and it remains there as one is falling asleep later that night.

Tastes of...everything under the sun, and all that will be or ever was. Sunlight, starlight, spring rain, dew drops on rose petals. Etc. More realistically: walnuts, mushrooms, dank cellars, plums, spices, ancient oak. Amazing concentration but even more amazing lightness--it seems to float across the palate like a mist, leaving behind just...something thoroughly exquisite. I'll take a case, thanks.

Another massive wine, almost seems...tannic? And there's definitely an herbal/green character to all these old Maestro Sierra's, almost like salad greens. I swear I'm getting arugula off this.

Big rancio on the nose, with notes of marmalade, floral, some yeastiness. Light and delicate on the palate with great inner-mouth perfume, plus notes of walnut, and leaves a fine and complex grapefruity trail down the throat. Tremendous length (it doesn't actually go away until you move on to something else).

Extremely great, and I'm now decided on this being my favorite of the G-B VORS wines. Of course it is rich and raisiny, axle grease and toffee and walnut, but the concentration and structure are so great it sort of feels dry, sort of. There are red fruits, too, and at times almost a sense of old claret. Freshness, too, and a sense it could be kept for years in bottle, possibly even developing.

Very very dry, with a well-delineated profile-a common thread, I think, among vintage sherries- and an overall impression of a peanut butter cookie...I liked this one. The orange character is here, too, and it certainly seems like it spent a long time under flor.

NV Casa Pedro Domecq Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Amontillado 51-1a Solera 1830 30 Years Old

Palomino Fino more

9/30/2009 - yofog wrote: 96 points

From memory. This was an older bottle, with the classic white paper label with black script, presumably quite a bit of bottle age but I couldn't decipher the lot code (get it together Domecq!). Utterly sublime nose, of a purity I had not previously imagined possible. Very much an old solera/cellar nose, profound is an understatement. The palate is super fine and remains my definition of "focus," this wine has a perfect, diamond-like structure. Almond and saline in profile, but the flavor profile isn't really the point, I think.

Vinous! Lavender, tannic, rich and mature fruit on the palate, the 45% abv is not felt thanks to its great age and natural reduction. Almost a bridge between Cognac and mature fine wine, this is hearty and classic brandy, to be served with cigars, or, my preference, cakes and pies.

Extremely fine. Apparently this never saw flor, but is called amontillado because it fits that style, and it does. Very brisk, minerally/saline version of amontillado, with tremendous concentration (40 yrs) and some of that tangy, mouthwatering "oldness" you get with a lot of the VORS stuff.

Utterly brilliant, basically perfect old Bdx, still showing plenty of plump, ripe fruit. Color is still very classic ruby with just a hint of orange at the rim. Nose is all cassis and cigar wrapper. Round and supple and fresh on the palate, with a finish that lasts forever. At peak but it's not going anywhere. Unbelievable.
