6/30/2021 - KenK Likes this wine: 100 pointsI have been blessed to have this wine on several occasions, but cannot recall a better bottle. The color was dark amber, which had me a touch concerned. But from the aromas of sweet apricots, molasses, almond and citrus notes any worries vanished. Ripe, luscious, powerful, and decadent. This is bursting with flavors beyond description. Smooth and viscous, yet an underlying acid cut also creates a surprisingly pretty lively wine. A true legend that has to be tasted to be believed. |

4/24/2017 - KenK Likes this wine: 100 pointsBig Boy Bordeaux Spring Dinner (Morton's Northbrook): A perfect wine, aging at a glacial pace even from this 375 ml. Rich sweet profile of apples, peach, banana, and pineapple in the center of the best creme brulee on earth, yet amazingly bright and fresh with a finish that I can nearly still taste a day later. Wow, what a treat! Thanks Jeff! |

4/3/2018 - KenK Likes this wine: 100 pointsA DC Wino hits Chi-town (RPM Steak): From 375ml, still so young, exciting, and exotic. Aromas of rich creme brulee, soft and silky texture featuring a kaleidoscope of ripe fresh tropical fruits. Dense, creamy, and lush, yet still so vibrant. This will outlive anyone alive today. Clearly, one of the best Yquem vintages ever. |

5/29/2014 - KenK Likes this wine: 100 pointsTruly epic. Pristine bottle despite a hand written stocking label saying 2001 Leoville Poyferre and being identified by imprinted capsule and cork. Begins with beautiful rich sexy bold aromas of mint chocolate, sweet lush dark cherries, and a touch of creme fresh. Large scale classic Bordeaux flavors come in waves of layers with wonderful density, purity, and has a rich mouthcoating texture that simply cannot be described fairly. Sweet cedar, creamy black cherry with a dark concentrated middle. Vibrant and so balanced. Extraoridnary long finish featuring nutmeg and allspice. A real wow wine, that blows my mind, not just for the age and condition, but for what is in the glass. Blind I would have guessed a 1990 first growth, wow. This thing is crazy great. One of the very best wines I have ever had the honor of trying. 100 Points 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

6/16/2023 - KenK Likes this wine: 100 pointsPerhaps the best Unico ever made. Opened for Hezi's 70th. This was utterly amazing, fill to near top shoulder and a very crumbly cork, true for both Hezi and the bottle (lol) This showed a crazy dark fruit perfumed nose with unbelievable wild mint herb aromatics that were completly beguiling. The palate followed with utterly amazing flavors of big dark dried fruits, spices not of this world, crazytown. I was saving this bottle for a long time and it was opened at the perfect time. On a night when we had 1961 Lafite, Latour, 1989 HB, 1948 Yquem and so many other legends, it was unanimous among the 10 of us this was the the clear wine of the night if not of the decade, wow! Sadly, my only bottle and highly unlikely to ever try it again. I have had many many great vintages of Unico over the years and Especial and this one tops them all. Looks like I am not alone for sound bottles based on the notes here. |

Feminine and rich, a showy wine featuring great red cherry fruits in a creamy mouth coating style with nice brightness and long nutmeg spiced finish that would not quit. Aromas of rich ripe and perfumed qualities only Leroy can do. This is epic! |

3/9/2023 - KenK Likes this wine: 99 pointsWhile clearly too young to fully appreciate at this stage, this is a wine you need to really experience to really understand. Perfumed like no other wine in the line up today, this is amazingly floral, nuanced, and beautifully red fruited. This all enveloped by an alluringly silky smooth texture with a seemingly perfectly balanced structure. Its fresh, pure, serious, delicate, and complex. Ripe and dense, yet weirdly light and effortless too. A wine that both comes to you and you need to really think about. While clearly refined and regal, its also yummy even today. To realize this is only hinting at its full potential and will only get better is difficult to fully appreciate. |

3/10/2015 - KenK Likes this wine: 99 pointsLa Paulee 2015: Who woulda thunk? I had this in the cellar since mid 1980's, one of the original wines I bought. It was a risky choice to open as fill was a touch low and color of dark tea. However, upon opening aromas wafted upwards in an amazingly encompassing way that reminded me why I love Burgundy so much. Cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, clover, dried black cherry, and so much more. Palate was alive and had a lovely sweet edge with completely integrated layers of delicate flavors. Finish was light, but elegant. This is what Burgundy is all about for me. |

Chiseled and bright while also deep and rich with a finish that does not seem to end. The texture and balance create perfect harmony. A wine of real breed that impresses, Even served blind everyone got this right. A very special treat! Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

3/9/2023 - KenK Likes this wine: 99 pointsThis was a tad closed aromatically today, but did show wonderful big dark extracted fruit with classy Asian spices. The first sip clearly indicated this was going to be a very special wine. Texturally, smooth and long with good concentration of dark red fruits and lots of complex wild spices. The most impressive feature perhaps was the unusually long and fantastic finish that lasted easily over one minute. The combination of fruit intensity and a broad dense structure point to potentially a perfect wine with time. Rating more for potential then drinkability today. |

10/24/2021 - KenK Likes this wine: 99 pointsThis was stunning and Jeff Leve just nailed it, although I think his scoring is a tad conservative. This was so fine, delicate and delicious with everything in perfect harmony. Beautifully integrated wild red strawberries, light spice, and floral notes with a seamless weightlessness that is haunting. The fresh red fruit flavor profile is off the chart on the yummy scale too. I love how this is showing and likely holds here for several years. Only problem is the price, yikes! 12/15/2015 - KenK Likes this wine: 99 pointsAt Acker Tribeca Grill BYOB Party. Rich sweet large scale aromas of cigar, dark fruit, and stone. One sniff and its wow already. Absolutely, packed with concentrated core of ripe creamy blackberries, tobacco, and cornucopia of dark spices. So well balanced and well framed with a wonderful structure of smooth tannins. The finish simply does not end. This lives up to its hype. Most notable feature is the wall of just the most amazing fruit flavors on the palate. It does show a touch of age, but blind you would thing this was from the mid 1990's, so lots of life left here. This defines a "WOW" wine in Bordeaux. |

3/9/2023 - KenK Likes this wine: 99 pointsVery aromatic and showy featuring baked apples, toasted brioche, and petrichor elements. Luscious, unctuous, rich, and round with pretty underlying inner mouth energy that is only noticeable as the flavors lingers on the highly impressive finish. Power, purity, and a crazy long finish with unbelievable deliciousness. Wow! |

9/25/2017 - KenK Likes this wine: 99 points1955 First Growth Face Off (El Ideas): Rock Star Wine. High shoulder fill, tattered label, and a cork that slid out a bit too easily out of the bottle proved once again why these signs can be completely meaningless predictors of what lies inside. For the wine was sublime. Highly fragrant aromas of dark sweet red plums, cocoa, and espresso set this up as a very special treat from the get go. A sumptuous showy wine driven by ripe sweet chocolate covered cherries with an unbelievably smooth milky texture. Baking spices galore to boot. A real wow wine which came across relatively youthful for it's rich fruit forward nature. Decadent with a wonderful finish that lingered on sip after glorious sip. Clearly in the running for my wine of the year. |

1/26/2013 - KenK wrote: 99 pointsAmazing nose classic nose of roses, tar, and tea. Shows some leather and black spice. The palate sings with utterly perfect balance and integrations. Highly nuanced notes of spice, toast, dried black fruits, and floral components. Suberb finish that is both clean, yet dusty. One of the best wines i have had in some time and I have had a lot of great bottles recently. |

Perfectly balanced and full of life. A showy wine with concentrated sweet cherry and strawberry intermingle with black spices, graphite, and finely grained tannins. Quite complex with multiple layers of nuanced character that simply do not quit. Sophisticated and elegant with lots of life ahead. A truly great bottle of wine, this is special stuff. 11/25/2016 - KenK Likes this wine: 98 pointsWow, just wow! This is extremely fragrant with all kinds of wild red fruits and exotic floral aromas that comes in huge waves. One the palate, a delicate and quite feminine style, yet intense with spices and ripe strawberries. An impressively long complex finish to boot. Perfectly balanced and very showy today, open for businesses, but hints that ahead maybe even more is in store. Served at 2016 FAT party and perhaps only the 2008 Leroy Richebourg was better on this glorious eve. |
