Linear, pure and precise. Green olive tapenade, finely structured, lots if hers and medicinal notes. Initially red fruit, but then more and more black fruit of bramble berry. Intense, fruity, heavy and dense palate with lots of fresh acidity. Over time revealing perfumed and even a bit floral elements. Also peppery spiciness on the palate. Mouthcoating tannins. Kept about 2 glasses worth in the bottle for the next day. The main difference was more pepper I found. You just have to be a sucker for these wines. For me a whisker ahead of the 2012 (98+ vs 98), but would be great to have them battle next to each other one day for a final verdict.

2002 Kongsgaard Syrah. We love this wine and this was the best K. Syrah we’ve ever had. This was my wine of the evening. After 4 hours in the decanter it had very intense, focused blackberries on the nose with some meat, tarragon, smoke and forest aromas. On the palate it is big and fat but with a very intense, focused blackberry fruit - almost towards black currant. It has lots of toast, licorice and smoke under the fruit. Long, very nice aftertaste. 98p.

California opulence with the complexity of northern Rhone. Deep purple and crimson with a nose of unmistakable honeydew. Black current and blackberry up front with strong but silky tannin (decanted for 6 hours), bacon mouthfeel, and a looooong finish. The best syrah I have ever tasted.

This was an amazing experience and for clearly the best wine of the evening. I just love this expressive, high-precision and dark US Syrahs which seem to combine the new world opulence and the terroir-drivenness and cool expression of the old world. While I haven’t found such a wine in Central California, this hillside wine from Napa plays almost in the same league as the Bionic Frog from Cayuse (which tasting this wine blind was my guess). 98 points! Worth any search and just exceptional. On a side note: I had this wine 18 months ago and rated it 91 points as it showed wild, unbalanced and overripe and much more monolithic. Additional time in the bottle really helped here.

TN: Very intense dark olive paste, the purest form of a ripe fresh strawberry, lots of dark and some blue forest berries, smoked meat, volcanic minerality, wet dark earth, almonde purée, salty scents. All these different aromas are so intense and well defined. Just pure magic. Very good structure with a lot of very smooth tannins, a perfect acidity keeping it fresh. Good medium+ length.

Decanting: At this point a 90 mins decant should do the job.

0.5-1h decant, but then kept in the decanter for another 2h. Super linear, gamey, green olives. Intriguing fruit as it comes across surprisingly red but the overall imprint in my senses is dark. The animal character extends in all kinds of dimensions ranging from wet dog to raw meat smoked bacon. Incredible, razer-sharp precision. A laser-thin layer of mint right through the middle. Lots of fresh acidity. Over time in the glass a hint of oxidative notes with salty roasted almonds. Concentrated to an extent where you wonder if you risk ending up with a black hole in the glass. Fully confirms my previous 98 score in Feb 2018.

Flat out gorgeous wine. Smoked meat, black pepper, blackberries, and some floral element I can’t put my finger on (Violets? I should sniff flowers more) Perfectly balanced and incredibly graceful finesse on the palate. It has that effortless power where it just glides over your palate. WOTY candidate.

An intense and bold wine that immediately commands your full attention and has everything on offer you wish for: Herbal and vegetal notes of olives (black and green), a broad meaty layer, spice, smoke and a dark cherry fruit. Electric acidity and brutal tension add dizzying depth to the palate which follows a firm tannic structure. But thanks to a softening texture, the appearance is still fresh juicy and the fact that the fruit turns more red here adds a sense of lightness. An outstanding Kongsgaard Syrah at the very beginning of its drinking window. I did not decant this, but felt there was so much substance it was almost irrelevant – you might just as well pour this directly or decant it for 6h, probably won’t see a material impact.

My WOTN! You could just tell from the first smell that this was going to kick ass. Nose of mocha, ripe blue fruit, pepper, funky animal fur (similar to a certain WA State winery whose wines I've occasionally liked ). Huge in the mouth with blueberries and blackberries that had every bit of life squeezed out of them. Lush and silky but radiant and enlivened your taste buds. Century long finish. Ridonkulous. Decanted for about 4 hours prior to serving. Kongsgaard in the good years is California Syrah at its best. Deep purple color, smoky dark fruit nose. Palate was black currant, dark fruits, smoked meats, licorice. Spice/pepper on the finish, which is long and nuanced. Gorgeous Syrah, balanced and integrated. Should be right in its zone for several more years

Wow. Very young. Much better 2 days after opening which suggests high quality wine... Very rich and dense. Very balanced, rich; great mouth feel, texture and finish. Like a smooth napa cab. Different from a french rhone... but very delightful.

Chocolate covered cherries, stewed tomatoes, braised lamb, sassafras, hot pebbles and Oolong tea. The middle palate just looms and weaves the most beguilingly silky tannins; the long and endowed finish will go on for an eternity. There's so much time left to this illustrious siren. Drink now - 2023.

Super rich and full bodied, loaded with deep dark berry with a light background hint of peppery spice, beautifly lush supple tannins. Great now but will have no problem lasting in the cellar for a decade or more. I think "wow" would be most everyones initial response. Cheers!

Awesome. Black olives, pepper, mocha on the nose. A wonderful mouthfeel, with a just perfect acidic punch in the middle so often lacking in rich Cali syrahs. Finish is long. This huge wine is so perfectly balanced, it almost feels light somehow. I loved it.

Young but extraordinary now. A prodigy. Smooth, chalky, complex, sexy. I could go into the black cherry and pepper and other 50 flavors but I would miss many and that would not be fair. All of them are critical and who wants to give away an ending better than Casablanca without cliche? But remember Casablanca was not cliche in its day. It is a stereotype because it is so emulated. Drink this Kongsgaard and you are drinking history and future. They should be talking about this wine 50 years from now. What fun it will be to say I knew her when she was three.

Uncorked DK BYO (Restaurant Nouveau - Copenhagen): Very dark red. Extremely intense and sweet nose of blackcurrant, underneath that layers of flowers, herbs and dried craneberries, smoke licorice and cough juice. In the mouth it virtually explodes and becomes weightless, the flavors going everywhere. The sweetness of the fruit outs this as Californian, but in complexity and mouthfeel close to a perfect Cote Rotie.

Second bottle this year, and I loved it both times. This is not a wine for those typical ausstralian( all jammy fruit, like cough syrup) shiraz lovers. I'm not saying there aren't any well balanced aussi bottles, but the masses are going towards those Robert Parker fruit bombs without any real character. This wine is very complex and takes time to disrobe. Full of rich, dark fruit, beefy, spice, tar, and a wonderful earthiness mixed throughout. I have 3 bottles left of this treasure, and I plan to enjoy them with very select freinds who are worthy. I know I sound like a snob.

Hugely dark and dense wine where the color goes further out to the rim than I've ever seen. Starting to brown a bit on the edge. 94;80. Massive structure, initially a bit too acidic but after 3-4 hours decanted it really gets superb. Very dark flavors, deep, ripe blackberries, ash, meat, blood, scorched earth. It also has a stemmy, herbal note that adds bitterness to it, I think it improves the wine but Lynn does not really like it. This is a massive wine but it still needs at least 5 hours of decanting and preferably 8.
