Complex, med+ body, dark juicy fruit, holding up well. Good wine but was not the #1 wine of the night IMHO (#1 as chosen by the group). DD Blind 1982-2005 Bordeaux 1st Growth dinner at BOA steakhouse.

Darker, much finer bubbles than the Henriot; brioche, fish-oil, tangy fruit, nice pedigree, balance. Tied for #9 and #10th place. I thought it was quite good. guessed '07 DP. Yarom Group DD Champagnes at Blooming VIP Chinese.

10/15/2022 - peternelson Likes this wine: 93 points

Top class Bordeaux blend. Excellent dark fruits, cassis, blkberry etc., nice structure, some herbal notes, good grip. Haven't had anything close to this yet in Japan besides the Hokkaido PN. At the winery w/Toshi and gang.

Also drank at:
Sanyo Wine (good, fun cat labels, Delaware, Koshu, and other grape wines)
Maruki--Marquis Winery(good Koshu but we tasted other reds which were not as good)
Fugiclair (Nice big fancy tasting room, cheap plastic cups and a wine dispenser--many places use cheap tiny plastic cups and an auto-dispenser for about 100 yen for 20ml taste. Got potato chips here)
Marufugi (tried to be French, nice Japanese style building, awful wine)
Haramo (Had the Black Queen grape wines, had a decent aged Koshu 2012?)
Katsunuma (horrible)
Kurambon (cool spot with old wine antiques, decent wine, "Kimagure" whimsical wine)
Mercian (top wines were excellent, lower priced wines very basic; beautiful tasting room and winery and grounds)
Grace (excellent quality all-around; beautiful tasting room and winery)
Huggy (first winery we visited, unassuming but good quality)
Soryu (really cheesy place, funny cellar below the tasting room, no wines available to taste!)

12/17/2022 11:11:00 AM - I agree, very expensive for the wines worth drinking. I notice a funny thing in secondary or tertiary (or lower) wine markets. It doesn't matter the clout or history or pedigree of the maker or the significance (or insignificance) of the region in the world market, prices seem to reflect the local significance of the wine. There's a lot of less than stellar wines that sell for exuberant prices, just because they tend to be better wines in their relative markets. Mercian is a perfect example. Their top tier wines are really good, but are exalted like the crown jewels because they stand apart in their region, not because they are intrinsically great wines.

This is a vibrant, compact CS, with mineral and leather notes, but also with a lively core of bright fruit. No obvious oak make this an elegant, rather complex and quite serious Cabernet. Beautifully made.

6/21/2022 3:04:00 PM - Ha! Nice observation! Unfortunately I don't know if I picked the wrong heading, or I accidentally wrote Cabernet in my notes! Based on the "mineral and leather" descriptor, it could have been the cab, but "lively core of bright fruit" leads me to think it may have been a Syrah! Probably a cab since I referred to that twice in my notes. I guess we'll never know for sure...

Faded ruby with brownish hues; first whiff gave up musty earthy notes, wet clay, swamp, but after aired for 10-15 min. revealed some stewed berries, hints of earthy spice, cellar must, wet wool and the like. Soft thin entry with tannins almost completely resolved but still some dusty fine tannins hanging in there, medium acidity, tangy, really fun, drinking well and good with pork belly! Amazing for this age and level, very much enjoyed it. But made everything else taste new (even if other bottles were 40 and 20 years old!). Langham Hotel at the Terrace Restaurant.

Excellent GC Chablis, lovely fragrant nose, crunchy tree fruit, but with perfect weight and concentration behind it, clean, silky balanced mouthfeel, slight white pepper tingly spicy impression that was cool and unexpected (chalk it up to youth?). Long, and in a word, excellent. Nothing wrong with a young Chablis at all. But turned into water when retasting after the 3 Granges and Chris Ringland Shiraz! Langham Hotel Terrace w/Yarom and gang

This was ok, but had a burnt charcoal quality to it, a bit stewed and dark ash kind of thing. Not as structured as the '89 or '04. Interesting, but probably needs charred BBQ ribs to go with! Not the best of shape. At the Langham Hotel Terrace restaurant with Yarom and the gang.

  • Comment posted by peternelson:

3/19/2021 8:46:00 PM - Can't say. But, both 1988 and '89 were not great vintages to say the lease. And '89 was supposedly terrible but to me it really sailed. Could be bottle variation. Or storage. These were brought by someone else so I don't know. But very interesting. Just goes to show you can't rely on vintage charts!

Chalk, yeasty autolysis, very cool saline aspect with a hint of anise in the nose which is really intriguing; powerful, quite expressive without giving itself away. Long long finish. The real deal here, and a bit less than the Chetillons. With Rodolphe Peters at the estate.

  • Comment posted by peternelson:

12/15/2020 1:08:00 PM - I would say the Esprit possibly is more approachable now than the Chetillons. The Chetillons is more intense, but also a bit more closed down. Not more austere, but more compact, with buried fruit and great terroir transparency (i.e. minerality). Hope this helps. I hope one day and can try these two together again.

  • Comment posted by peternelson:

9/21/2020 11:30:00 AM - I absolutely love Chetillons, one of my favorite champagnes, and the '12 is stellar. If you can afford it, buy it. That won't be around very long. Very good investment in my opinion--you'll can have that for at least a decade or two in your cellar.

  • Comment posted by peternelson:

9/18/2020 11:45:00 PM - I'm not sure. I haven't had many 2014's, but I was in Champagne that summer and remember it raining quite a bit. BdB's are supposed to be better in the Cotes des Blancs, Pinots not so much. And if the Esprit is any indication, coupled with the fantastic white Burgs that year, should be pretty good.

More blackberry aspect than La Mouline, richer, full, ample tannins, pretty powerful but in balance and slight perfume from Viognier; exotic notes, fruits on the palate. Classic La Turque, power and balance and walks the line between La Mouline and La Landonne. This was amazing. I liked the Mouline at first, but kept going back to this, the Landonne simply being too big, tannic, and a bruiser.

This was delish at first with canned pear juice, lemon tart, and tons of reduction--aromatic glue kind of notes. Rich, creamy mouthfeel but somehow still light and balanced on the palate. But then the reduction hijacked this nice wine and almost buried it. After 40-50 minutes all I could taste was reduction. Which I like in small doses. Good with the scallops early on, but the Raveneau was a better pairing with more cut acidity.

11/6/2018 9:52:00 AM - I would try a pork chop with herbs, or a light pasta dish with red sauce, maybe lemon chicken, even salmon. I'm sure it could handle more robust dishes, but I'd keep the dish sort of medium weight, and pair with most things you might pair with a red Burg, food not too strong in the flavor department, and with good acid.

I was a little nervous about this purchase b/c through the green glass it looked possibly a little dark. It was a little amber color, have some slight oxidzed issues, but over all cork was good, pressure upon opening good, nose nice. Notes of caramel, walnut, and small forest berry pie, little tart mixed berries. medium rich, Pinot character clearly in evidence, good structure, still pretty powerful with fine bubbles that lasted but were not over abundant. excellent acidity, med+ finish. Tangy tartness in the finish. This was more developed that it should have been but was still very enjoyable, especially with a roasted chicken and fall vegetable. Disgorged 2007, 48 mo. on the lees. This could be 1999 or 2000 base or older.

7/15/2018 9:42:00 AM - This was a the time of the Hospices de Beaune and many of the producers there were pouring the recent harvest wines pulled from barrel and put in unmarked bottles. There were many barrel tastings going on, and in fact I tasted many 2012's from barrel at various domaines, and at the Palais des Congres. Some of my notes state that some of the wines were a little fizzy and still seemed to be fermenting! Good times, but very difficult to assess. I preferred tasting the many 2010's on offer, as did most. Cheers! Peter
