Impressive young juice. Not entirely sure it is to my liking but it is impressive nonetheless. Huge nose of oaky cheddar cheese, seriously, intensely oaky in fact. The first thing that greets you is a wall of blackberry that moves towards a slightly more tart element of raspberry. I quite like the underlying freshness. Supple and suave, there are evident tannins, but this is gorgeously balanced. Really so much lovely raw material. Savory and spicy with nice black currant, but then this is subterfuged by raw oak. From the handful of 2007's I have tasted, this is going to be a truly special vintage in Washington. And while this has amazing potential, why did they oak it so heavily?

Mmm, lifted, bright, floral nose. The palate is spicy and sleek, "cinnamon red hots" to steal a descriptor from Justin. This does have a very high acid profile and is lean, racy, not an easy wine, and really wants food. Now for me, everything I just wrote is a positive. This is tasty stuff! I will say that when I revisited this there was a bit of a odd lactic note, not off-putting but hard to place.
NOTE: this was a Daily Drinkers selection courtesy of Justin Wells.

Wow, such a wonderful expression of Syrah. Intensely red fruit with a gamey, feral, bloody base to it. Gunpowder, white pepper and smoke are perched atop blood and venison tartare. Impressive acidity and still very present tannins show this has a loooong way to go, but the structure is so suave and permissive that it is shockingly approachable. This really is an otherworldly expression of Syrah, nearly singular.

FWW, I have been blown away by pretty much every Reynard I have ever opened. I am less excited by Chaillot. Sadly the ship has sailed a bit on Allemand, just so pricy for what it is now. You should check out Lyle Fass and some of the other Cornas and St. Joseph he is pushing.

It's always a happy spring day when a new vintage of this wine lands in Portland. Ballerina-pink, with bright pink grapefruit, orange, and briney sea water notes on the nose and palate. The spritz and minerality are both gentler than they were in '08. The '08 was almost painfully acidic, and much as we loved it, it really needed food to come into balance. Like the '07, the '09 is perfectly drinkable on its own. We'll be drinking bottle after bottle of this all spring and summer.

I think Brix really nailed it with his note here in terms of the wine's characteristics with the exception being that I found this rather joyless. For me, rose is about refreshing, energetic, food-friendliness, and if it has some additional complexity (like in a Baudry rose or a Mordoree Tavel), then that's bonus. But this wine delivered none of those qualities. Sour, spritzy, and a bit of a slog to drink on what was a nice spring picnic with my family.

M&PD Zoom Tasting: Bordeaux (Zoom): Super young. My initial guess was a ridiculous 2016 just based on how primary and fruity this was. Dense. Just an absolute wall of decadent fruit. Blackberry. Super juicy. John hinted that maybe there was some coffee showing, and at that point (power of suggestion) there was clear espresso and coffee on the nose. It seemed like the clear and obvious Right Banker at that point.

Barolo-Barbaresco 2001 (and perhaps older...). (Bern): More elegant and vinous, classic Nebbiolo nose, but less explosive. On the palate it is very elegant, earthy, serious, ferrous, salty. Very mineral, very good. No, even fantastic.

Two days later: it changed quite a bit, it now has less body, more evidently light-footed. Complex and elegant, very mineral and earthy. I loved it very very much.

Wow!

Ordered off a restaurant list, but we planned ahead and had them decant an hour before we arrived.

Such an explosive interplay of dried rose petal, potpourri, tobacco, dust and “old library” in a good way. Texturally, this is silky, mature, the faintest of tannins, and a wonderful, initially light yet energetic vein of acidity. With more air this becomes incredibly vibrant, gaining energy and freshness, almost pulsating in its intensity. Fresh pours from the decanter were just explosive, although this did fade a little bit in the glass.

Ultimately, this is a stunning expression of Nebbiolo. Just wonderful!

8/16/2021 4:35:00 AM - I never get too hung up on specific vintages and vineyards. There will always be another, and I think the more important thing is just appreciating the specific producer and their overall expression. I do think based on our experience before that these are best enjoyed on their own and not necessarily head to head with Barolo and Barbaresco, as these really are somewhat different expressions.

I've had fantastic California chardonnay for many years. Tasted the greats from late 70s to the present. This is not one, notwithstanding the scores. There are currently a few great wine makers in CA who make wonderful CA chardonnay that is not of this heavy style. Looking at the scores, there must be a new taste preference that is radically different than mine. This is a wine with too much weight, candied fruit, spice and alcohol. Maybe it should be used as a syrup for a vanilla sundae.

Followed across two days.
On day 1 the aromatics were very compressed with a dominant green peppercorn note. However on day 2 this has expanded considerably with a high-toned violet element and nice notes of freshly cracked black pepper. A whiff of alcohol distracts momentarily.
The palate is fantastic, taut, red-fruited, yet with a surprisingly lush midpalate. On day 1 this was all love and puppies. On day 2 this has clamped down, and the structure is far, far more apparent with a peppery, dusty aspect dominating the finish.
This is very young, very pure, and very wound up. I am especially impressed with the way it threads the needle between savory and lush. The marriage of Boushey and Force Majeure is inspired and exceptionally effective.
Strong wine. Really strong wine.

Served this blind to a friend who soon after tasting guessed that it was a Portuguese red, a pretty fair assumption in my opinion as it showed extracted fruit, soft tannins and very round, plush fruit. Tons of delicate blue and black fruits, wood and more. Lovely and while I would recommend drinking it sooner rather than later, it's a wonderful treat now.

I agree that some bottles of the 1981 are clearly in decline, but I have had bottles in the past 5 years that are still glorious and outrageously powerful. Still, truly wonderful wine. The 1979 is another beauty but much more Burgundian in stature in stage (if any CDP can be compared to Burgundy).
