Impressive...it's 5 years old!

11/17/2016 1:58:00 PM - I took a flyer on this when it was offered by a small distributor I frequent in Seattle, Full Pull Wines. Their notes said this was the Club-only release at $35, and I was able to get two bottles at $15. It was quite enjoyable.

The most complete, rounded, and structured of a flight of Bethel Heights wines. Had wondered why it was the last to be poured, and the grip and structure answered that question emphatically. This can evolve for at least a decade and may improve.

2013 Betz Family Syrah La Côte Rousse

Red Mountain more

7/31/2016 - Motz wrote: 94 points

Betz's style appears to be shifting toward varietally correct, balanced, and terroir driven, with oak as a condiment rather than the main course. This offering commands attention from the outset, expressing tremendous purity of (non-jammy, non-inky) Syrah, powerful acid, and surprising tannins. The mouthfeel delivers a strong sense of stately poise and depth. The middle and back turn rustically griping and gritty and the finish has no quit in it. Reminiscent of Gramercy Cellar's finest offerings, this wine has the substance to age for 12 to 15 years. Appealing and delicious! 93-95!

50/50 blend of Roussanne and Viognier, and a perfect example of the capability of white wine to age if properly constructed. Light viscous mouth feel with peach aromatics. A screaming deal at $10 from Full Pull

I actually get a lot of tropical fruit on the nose here; which no one else seems to get on these, but I swear it's there.

White flowers, lemon peel, orange peel, guava, passion fruit, pineapples, white peach, fresh baked bread and a hint of vanilla on the nose. The palate indeed loses the tropical fruit but adds rosemary, chamomile tea and cheese rind notes. The citrus and the stone fruit notes are quite intense on the palate. Bitter herbs on the finish.

Rounded on the palate with medium + body and medium acid and a lingering finish. Drink now.

2008 Col Solare

Columbia Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/20/2014 - Motz wrote: 91 points

The four vintages of Col Solare I've tasted have displayed noticeable nuance, no two are the same. The 2005, 2007, and 2009 vintages, however, can generally be categorized as bold; the 2008 is subdued, even elegant, by comparison. The nose is mostly mute, the attack soft. The wine comes to life at the mid palate, showing refined grainy tannins, and very nice acidity. This is accompanied by charming dark berry fruit that emerges from behind the oak. In a word, racy.

2012 Côte Bonneville Cabernet Sauvignon DuBrul Vineyard

Upon first pour the nose is a strawberry parade, flat out. Decant, wait, then wait some more to be rewarded with an intriguing bouquet that displays a mineral-rich mountain air and eucalyptus leaves freshness. This is coupled with cassis, blackberries, cherry cola syrup, cotton candy, definitely some boozy heat, very enveloping.
Intense and concentrated palate showing characteristic WA state minerality. Palate feel is round, full and commanding with lengthy finish. I maintain that this is one of the top 5 cabs from WA state.
To be clear, this is the "red label" Cote Bonneville Cabernet Sauvignon of which so little is made (I have heard that it is generally a single barrel, maybe 2, resulting in fewer than 60 cases - and only in exceptional years). Not to be confused with the "white label" Cote Bonneville Dubrul Vineyard - which is a cab/merlot blend. The wine is aged for 22 months in new French oak before bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Fragrant bouquet, an admixture of fruit and quality oak. Dubrul fruit (high acid, low tannin) is readily apparent. Judicious use of oak, medium plus acid, substantive finish. There's a lot to this and though it drinks very nicely now it should provide even more enjoyment in two to three years. Drink through 2025. 91-92.

Tasted blind, vanilla draped (oak) Red Mountain aromatics on the bouquet. Very dark in color. Huge, palate singeing alcohol. First thought Red Mountain Souzao because of the high acid, then corrected to PV.

10/2/2018 2:23:00 PM - Hey, Motz. Just picked up a bottle of this via Full Pull. I expect the bottle age to have tempered that alcohol a bit. Just spent a month in No. Italy, Switzerland and France. Drank nothing but local, or at least same country while I was there. Old World often light-bodied compared to WA reds.

The prettiest vintage of this wine that I recall, while also the most delicate. The bouquet features effusive stone fruit (nectarine, white peach, apricot) essences, with white flower, tropical, honey, and citrus accents. Gorgeous! More of the same on the palate, in balanced, crystalline-like, inflection-changing waves. Compelling energy and lift frames the fruit beautifully, enhancing the overall harmony. This will be difficult to resist in its youth. It will be interesting to follow over the next several years.

Took to dinner for my son's 28th birthday dinner at Daniel's Broiler on Lake Union. Decanted both bottles and drank over the dinner. Ready to go now! Initial nose was very full of floral and berry notes, first sip a little tight. Completely unwound within 15 minutes to silky smoothness. Not too complex, but nice subtle changes through a medium finish.

I'm not a pinot guy, especially if I haven't tasted before buying. I bought this on a strong recommendation, which seemed justified when this got rated #3 on WS Top 100. It was good, but whatever it was that the pros got out of, I didn't see it. Had with Thanksgiving dinner.
